Cavallo Point charms guests with its serene atmosphere, blending vintage allure and contemporary comforts in spacious, clean rooms that offer breathtaking views. The hotel's location is applauded for its easy access to nature trails and San Francisco, while the extensive amenities and professional service garner consistent praise.
Despite this, some travelers caution that the price may not always reflect the perceived value. However, the overall cleanliness and historic ambiance contribute to a tranquil and memorable experience.

Detailed Reviews
I’ve stayed in various rooms over the years, for a girls’ night, romantic getaway, family time, and more. Here are my thoughts: the historic rooms are charming and lovely, but they are noisier than the contemporary rooms. The walls aren’t as thick and the front doors slam and make noise and the windows rattle a little. But they tend to be closer to the spa and the restaurants if accessibility is an issue. Most of the historic rooms have city views rather than the bridge view. There is a historic room with several connecting rooms for big families – my relatives stayed there and loved it. The contemporary rooms are sleek and minimalist and so comfortable. The suites are worth the price if you are coming for a special occasion – fantastic bathtub and view. The bath products are divine, made with organic lavender.
You can bike, walk, hike, spa or just sit on the porch and read.
The room service is fantastic: always hot and great value for room service in terms of price. The management in general is responsive and friendly while professional.
The morning coffee and pastries in the main lodge are such a great touch and they have a wine happy hour every evening as well; such a great way to sit on the porch and enjoy the view.
They have a shuttle to the city (they use Lexus cars) so you can enjoy the city but come back to a more tranquil spot.
Great place for kids: The Discovery Museum is a 1 minute walk and the parade grounds in nice weather is like a giant play area: fly a kite, picnic, do cartwheels. And then you can get to Muir Woods easily and other kid-friendly “stuff.”
The spa is outstanding but does get busy on weekends so book ahead or try for early appointments.
If you want a specific room type it’s good to call the reservation line directly because they can help you pick the right room ahead of time, rather than trying to explain what you want when you check in.

This is our 4th time @ Cavallo Point & had a lovely time. The grounds are beautiful, easy to get to Sausalito & enjoy a nice meal, & relaxing. Unfortunately we stayed in one of the historic rooms & we were very dissatisfied with the room. We had a suite on the 2nd floor with ample room. However the noise from the adjacent rooms was significant as well as noise from outside. One of the biggest problems was the lack of AC. We’ve lived in SF for 15yrs so we understand AC is rarely needed but there are def days when it gets warm. We opened the windows & had a wasp fly in. We have a 4yr old so you can imagine. They sent us a Dyson fan & placed temporary screens in the windows so it helped. But with the screens placed we couldn’t shut the windows when the noise outside got loud. They were very accommodating but it was too much of a hassle. I would recommend staying in the contemporary rooms. Service on the patio for breakfast was also poor. They dropped off coffee, no milk/cream, no sugar, no spoon. Items were forgotten & took a long time for someone to come back to the table. They were all very nice but not what we are used to @ CP. We are assuming the small issues we had @ the restaurant are due to staff turnover from covid perhaps. Will give them another try in the future.

Very luxurious to stay in converted officer housing or barracks with beautiful views. Very quiet setting. Very expensive. Room service dinner ordered in advance to celebrate wedding anniversary was excellent albeit a little harder to coordinate than it should have been. Staff is very competent and friendly. Very dog friendly, too - our dog got a swag bag upon arrival! Room was comfortable and well appointed. The windows open for lots of fresh air, which is great. Only complaint is that rug in room was very dirty and stained. At these prices you could hit the carpets with a little Resolve, know what I'm sayin'?

I have stayed here for fourteen years and this last trip, guest experience was not great. Two days in a row, staff pounded on my door, invaded my privacy and insisted they enter my room to deliver an amenity and an obscure in house menu. Both times, I was indisposed, taken aback and jolted by their behavior. I asked them to leave whatever they had at the door and both times staff kept knocking and asking to enter room and once jiggled door while I was in the bathroom. During Covid leaving at the door is the way and at a five star hotel, a call and a message about a delivery is sufficient, not invasive pounding on door. I have never experienced that kind of invasive behavior at the hotel before and they need to brief all staff to be sensitive to guests who wish to be left alone. Rooms are not cleaned during stay, so don’t try to push into a guest’s room even if it is to deliver an amenity. Management felt they were within their protocols, with the excessive knocking and insistence on entering the room. Restaurant staff was not friendly and awkward. Food still very good and you can’t beat location. Spa is limited and fog horn blows all night just be aware they need to fine tune their service and it is expensive so ask at the desk for privacy and respectful approach to rooms.

I reserved a Contemporary King room. I arrived at the hotel around 2pm and was told that my room was not yet available, but for $100 extra, I could upgrade to a Contemporary Deluxe King room that was open, so I opted for that. The Contemporary rooms were built just 12 years ago, but I was surprised to see that they looked a bit worn. The room itself was spacious, with a comfortable sitting area and patio and a glimpse of the Golden Gate bridge.
The hotel offers complimentary use of electric vintage bikes and those were fantastic. A great way to explore the area.I had tried to make reservations ahead of time in the on site restaurant, which I was told by the front desk only takes reservations through Open Table and had no luck, however, when I stopped in a few hours before I wanted to eat, they were able to reserve a table for me at exactly the time I had hoped. The dinner at Murrary Circle was a highlight. Wonderful cocktails and an interesting selection of entrees that were perfectly prepared. The service in the restaurant was top notch. Settling in for the evening, I could hear the soothing sounds of the fog horn coming off the Golden Gate. Fast forward to 1am and I am cursing the fog horn(s) which I have discovered are actually multiple blasts, one that sounds every 10 seconds, and two more that blow consecutively every 15 seconds ALL NIGHT LONG!!! Mind you that the hotel is located at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge so it sounds as if the fog horn is directly outside the window. All I kept thinking was why don't they tell guests about this as I would have picked up some ear plugs beforehand?
After a mostly sleepless night, I was able to enjoy a nice morning hike around the headlands before checking out. Upon checkout I mentioned the issue with the fog horn and suggested that they inform guests ahead of time and perhaps supply ear plugs with a little note about the fog horns. The gentleman behind the desk was less than apologetic and simply said he would pass that on to the manager. When the valet brought my car around, I was a bit shocked to see that it was literally covered from top to bottom with mud splatters. The valet saw my surprise and said, "Hey, what do you expect, you are in a National Park, the car was parked under the Eucalyptus all night. If it makes you feel any better, all of the cars look like this." No that didn't make me feel better. Would have been nice if they could have at least hosed it off for what I was paying for the room..

I have to say that every time my family and me stay at Cavallo Point, is really a treat for us. It is very remarkable memories that me and especially my kids will remember for ever, definitely is the perfect place for everyone, specially now with this Pandemic going on this place is spread out between 50 acres surrounded by nature, fresh air and the stoning views really makes this place especial, I thank everyone for the best service they provide perfectly following the COVID-19 health guidelines.
I Highly recommended this uniqueness of a Hotel.

My wife and I booked a room for one night and made reservations for outdoor dinner at the Farley Bar. We had wonderful experiences at the Farley Bar and Murray Circle restaurant before, and thought it would be nice to spend a night.
We were greeted by friendly, efficient staff and offered a glass of wine. Sitting on the deck in the rocking chairs, sipping wine and enjoying the view of the Bay and Golden Gate was lovely—a high point.
We checked into our room in the historic section and were disappointed. We knew we did not pick a room with a spacious view, but did not think that at a $500 price point we would have a view of the parking area behind the room out a small bedroom window. There was a Spartan seating area with a limited view of the parade grounds. The room was small, not wide enough for two nightstands. It was clean and well appointed. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom, while large, was basic.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Farley’s. Our waiter was great, the outdoor seating comfortable, and the food excellent. The fog horns provided a unique experience!
We think those wishing to experience Cavallo Point would have better value by booking a room in Sausalito, and coming to Cavallo Point to enjoy the amenities and dine at Farley’s.

I was disappointed in our stay. I’ve always wanted to stay at this hotel and for the amount we paid I know we would have had better service, better quality sheet and towels, and a more unkept room. When you paid a certain amount for a deluxe suite at a nice hotel, you expect to be as comfortable as your own home if not better. I cannot say this was the case. We didn’t think to make a reservation at Murray circle and there was minimal attempt to accommodate us (the hostess could have found a time the tables we would have returned. Instead she insisted there was no availability. Since we we’re staying, we could clearly see empty tables). We stated it was our 10 year anniversary (so we were hoping to have something in the room waiting for us). It wasn’t until I paid another $150 on top of the $150 upgrade fee and asked for champagne glasses that they decided to leave a little bowl of macaroons. It’s a beautiful location, but for the price I would rather go to Napa or one of the luxury hotels in the city.

My first visit to Cavallo was great for a quiet escape in the Bay Area, but can't recommend otherwise based on the price alone.
Staff were friendly and welcomed us warmly. However, no welcome drink or info on hiking trails/map provided. Room was large and had great amenities like a deep soaking tub, luxury bath products (loved the shampoo and bath salts/bubble products), Lavazza coffee products, plush bed linens and so forth. Did give us room with a great view of the bay. Only downsides of room were stained carpet, barking dogs next door, banging window (blew all night in the wind) and faulty light.
Service was great, and they accommodated storing our bags after we checked out.
Other than window the place was so quiet and dark at night. Great location to access hiking and Sausalito. Otherwise need to use Uber, etc. to access city and public transit far away.
Appreciated coffee and pastry service in the morning as well as wine reception. Free yoga class was good, except they made no effort to ask or accommodate for those that had limited experience, such as my mother.
Restaurant had good service and the appetizer was delicious. However, the vegan pot pie was disappointing (huge chunks of unseasoned tough squash) and not worth the price they charge. Mercantile shop was also way overpriced.
For as much as is charged, and the "amenity" fee, I can't say I would return. With only certain amenities like hiking tours available on certain days it seems unreasonable they charge $45 a night for a 1 hr yoga class, a cup of coffee and a pastry. Yes, they have shuttle service, bikes, etc., but still seems exorbitant.

Responded Nov 2, 2021
Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback. I'm glad to know you enjoyed your room and our staff. I wanted to share with you that we stopped providing maps on a regular basis when we noticed most guests do use their phones and the paper was being wasted, however our Concierge is happy to provide them upon request along with any recommendations regarding local hikes. In regards to the welcome drink, since our check in is at 4pm and our daily wine reception is 4-6pm at the lobby, it usually happens around the same time for most guests. Again, I appreciate your great feedback and will share it with our Management team. Sincerely, Brendan

Cavallo Point is a gem of a place to stay, relax and recharge. I was in town over President's Day weekend for a family baby shower in San Rafael and arrived after being in Las Vegas for a weeklong work event. I had originally booked this resort at the suggestion of my SIL due to its proximity to the city/Marin as well as a special rate of book two nights and get the third free. The location of Cavallo Point is fantastic. It's a 45 minute drive from the airport but close to Sausalito and other quaint towns in Marin. It is placed nicely with a view of the water and the city and its broad lawn makes you feel a million miles away from the hustle/bustle of everyday life. I stayed in one of the historic rooms, which was nicely sized with a large bathroom and one of the most comfortable beds in which I have slept in quite some time. Pillows are a perfect assortment of hardness. Sheets are soft and cozy. Housekeeping comes twice a day, which is unexpected given most hotels have eliminated this service at such a frequency. We also dined at Farley twice during our stay - I highly recommend it for the food, wine list and atmosphere. For sure make reservations as it was quite busy.
The only challenge I had during my stay was parking - self parking is available but can be a bit tight (most guests end up parking in unofficial spots along the lane behind the homes).
This is really an excellent place to stay and I look forward to returning - although next time I will for sure make time for the spa too.

No, they do have room service and a restaurant.
Good question. I am not sure, but I’m sure they could answer that in an email
Our 2 bedroom historic suites have a king bed in one bedroom, a queen size bed in another bedroom and a pull out sofa in the living room that converts into a queen size bed. We also have our two bedroom loft with 2 twin beds in one room, a king bed in another room and the pull out couch in the living room, this would be a great room for your family. Please call our Reservation Department (415) 339-4700 for further details.
