What is Mobile Money Identifier (MMID)?
MMID is a 7-digit number issued by your bank to receive funds via IMPS. MMID is allotted by the bank when the customer registers his/her mobile number and account number in which the funds should be received. In case one has multiple accounts, each account will be allotted with different MMIDs.

How to Generate MMID for SBI via Internet Banking?
MMID is only required to receive funds. Sending funds with IMPS does not require you to enter your own MMID. However, just like your IFSC code, you should have this information handy. Here are the steps following which you can generate MMID for SBI from your mobile app:
Step 1: Download and install the mobile banking application from the respective app store. Also, ensure you select the right app. For example – SBI YONO
Step 2: Log in using the User ID and Password provided by the bank. The app automatically collects all your bank details as soon as you enter your registered mobile number/account number
Step 3: Select the IMPS option in the app and then choose IMPS mobile no. & MMID. Follow the prompts to generate your 7-digit MMID
Step 4: If you have multiple accounts, you may need to select the account for which you want to generate an MMID
Your SBI MMID will be generated. After your MMID is successfully obtained, you can use IMPS.

Generating SBI MMID by visiting the Home Branch
Visit your SBI home branch (where your active SBI account is held) with your bank’s passbook. Fill the form for issuance of MMID and enter all the details required. You will receive your MMID via SMS/E-mail.

How does MMID work in IMPS?
Step 1: Open the IMPS fund transfer interface in the mobile app and choose the ‘send money’ option
Step 2: Enter the registered 10-digit mobile number of the beneficiary along with the unique MMID. Both of these must be provided by the receiver. You can also choose to transfer money using the beneficiary’s bank account number, IFS code, and name of the account holder if they do not have IMPS activated
Step 3: Enter the amount you wish to transfer and confirm
You should always check all the details at least twice or even thrice before confirming the payment. Even a small mistake can lead to an incorrect money transfer.
- The combination of the phone number and MMID will never be the same for 2 individuals
- If the mistyped data does match someone else’s (the likelihood of this is extremely small), the funds will get transferred to this person’s account
- Banks are not liable for any wrong transactions
- In case of the wrong transaction, the only possible thing that you can do is to find the receiver and ask them to refund the transferred amount. However, if you do enter incorrect data, it will mostly not match anyone’s information. In this case, the transfer simply fails

Q. How many SBI bank accounts can be associated with one MMID?
Ans. Each bank account works with a unique MMID. So, only one bank account can be associated with one MMID. However, multiple MMIDs can be linked to one mobile number.
Q. Are my MMID and VPA the same?
Ans. No, MMID and VPA are two different unique identifiers. MMID is used by a person to receive fund transfers via IMPS. VPA is the virtual payment address for UPI transactions. Both are two different codes for two different platforms.
Q. Do I have to give MMID in UPI transfer also?
Ans. No, MMID is only required while initiating interbank electronics transfer via IMPS. For UPI transfers, you need to enter the VPA of the beneficiary.
