How to fight jetlag from Europe to Japan

I'm flying to Japan next week and need some advice to get over the jetlag as fast as possible. I'm flying from Europe and will arrive in Tokyo at 8am local time. My initial (yet unrealistic) plan is to stay awake the whole day until 8-9pm and then sleep. What can I do to make it easier?

I take sleeping bills on a regular basis that helps me sleep, so I will probably take one or two when it is 11-12pm JST time (5-6pm CEST time), somewhere above Kazakhstan or China.

What helped for you?

There is no 100% guaranteed plan. Trying to make it through the first day before you go to bed is the only thing that has worked for me. Never used sleeping tablets so can't comment. I always try and get a decent sleep (even if relatively short) as close to when we land or the dish out breakfast as possible. If there is anyway you can get in to your hotel room early, I would. Shower and change (freshen up feels like a new day) - then get straight out! I avoid any big meal until as late as possible, having regular coffee (and fluids) and snack breaks. Fresh air and daylight really helps so keep moving and do outdoor sightseeing. Hopefully it's a holiday so the adrenaline and excitement really helps, not sure I would have the same desire to stay up if a work trip! If you do take sleeping tablets take them in the evening, although you will be exhausted it will stop your body clock from getting you up at silly o'clock and having the battle the next day.

Your plan would help to overcome on D1 if you could fall asleep for at least 4 hours prior to landing. It'd be most difficult to stay sober from around 7am-1pm JST when you're supposed to sleep re your European body clock.

It might also help to adjust if you can checkin a hotel, have a shower. Grab some coffee, take meals and commence sightseeing re JST.

Early check in won't be possible unless you book the former night and pay for it. More than 90 cent in Tokyo hotels will be so.

Hi again! I have no difficulty with sleeping on the airplane (it is no quality sleep though). I can try to sleep at least four hours prior to landing. I can also wake up early at around 3am CEST and try to sleep at around 5-6pm CEST with help of my sleeping pills.

Unfortunately, I cannot check in early at my hostel.

I will probably do it like that:

- Wake up early prior to the flight

- Try sleeping at JST time

- Stay hydrated, no alcohol

- Doing outdoor sightseeing the first day

My go to has always been to have a really good rest the night before

Hydrate a lot during the day and before you travel and then on the plane try to sleep as much as you can. I hate to say this, but I swear I’d like to save my money and book business class so that I can lie down and go to sleep.

And that doesn’t work unlimited alcohol does but then that’s just me and then when I land, I like to drink a lot of water and walk walk walk, walk, walk, walk and exercise and then you’re most likely. You’ll have a nice tub in your room and I will fill it up with hot water soak, and then go to sleep And then I’m normally up at four in the morning but that’s just takes a couple of days and I’m done

Don’t stress about it you’ll be fine and if you’re tired, go to sleep
