Ambati Rayudu had an emotional farewell on Tuesday as his last game in the Indian Premier League ended with Chennai Super Kings lifting their fifth league title. The batter scored a quickfire eight-ball 19 in the final to play his part as CSK chased down a rain-revised target of 171 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

After initially playing for the Mumbai Indians from 2010 to 2017, he moved to the Chennai franchise, where he has been an integral part of the team. In 2019, Rayudu announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after being snubbed from the Indian cricket team for the 2019 ODI World Cup. But, he partially reconsidered that decision and returned to domestic and IPL cricket.

“It’s a fairytale finish and I couldn’t have asked for more. It’s unbelievable, really fortunate to have played in some great sides. This win is something I will remember for the rest of my life, for all the hardwork in the last 30 years, happy that it finished on this note. I can smile for the rest of my life. I would like to take this moment to thank my family and thank my father, without him I wouldn’t have been here today,” an emotional Rayudu said after the title.

After rain forced the IPL 2023 final to be played on Monday instead of Sunday, the game was interrupted again after the first innings. Under the DLS, the revised target was set at 171. The chase got dramatic at the end as CSK needed 10 runs off the last two balls. That’s when Ravindra Jadeja hit a six and a four on the last two balls to take Chennai home.

CSK captain MS Dhoni paid rich tribute to Rayudu. “Special thing about him is that whenever he is on the field, he’ll give you his 100 percent. And when he’s in the side, I’ll never win a fairplay award,” he said at the presentation ceremony.
