Any Ghostbusters film is only as good as its ghosts. After all, without ghosts to bust, there would be no need for the iconic team to step out of the firehouse. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire had a cool concept for its main villain, Garraka. Garraka is an ancient deity-type monster with the power to control any spirit he wishes. With a main antagonist that can control other ghosts at the helm of the ship, Frozen Empire had a lot of potential to produce some of the coolest ghost designs the franchise has ever seen.

Unfortunately, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire fell short in many ways. While critics and fans haven't agreed about the newest Ghostbusters installment, the reviews haven't been phenomenal. The ghosts also left a little something to be desired. While Garraka looked awesome, the film wasn't busting with the army of spirits a ghost-controlling entity like Garraka should produce. That said, Frozen Empire still has several incredible monsters that are worth seeing.

8 Slimer Is An Oldie, But A Goodie

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Image Reveals New Look at Slimer's Return
The classic ghost with an appetite for junk food is making a comeback in the upcoming sequel with an all-new design.
  • Slimer first appeared in Ghostbusters (1984)
  • He's made several appearances in other films, including Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters (2016), and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

Long-term fans of the Ghostbusters franchise are familiar with Slimer. Originally, Slimer was called Onionhead. He's gone by a few other names, including "the Mean Green Ghost." Essentially, Slimer is a giant green blob that excretes green ectoplasmic slime, hence the nickname "Slimer." Slimer is highly motivated by food and doesn't pay much attention to anything else. Originally, the Ghostbusters didn't believe Slimer had a higher level of intelligence.

In Frozen Empire, Slimer infests the firehouse's attic. The spirit settles into a giant pile of food wrappers and other trash where he comfortably hides. Slimer is easily spooked because every time Trevor tries to get rid of it, Slimer just makes a run for it. Slimer's inclusion is a fun callback to the original Ghostbusters film, but it doesn't do anything. The movie wouldn't have changed much if Slimer wasn't included.

7 Pukey Looks Like A Potato

  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire hit theaters on March 22, 2023
  • It had a budget of 100 million USD

Pukey only makes a couple of appearances throughout Frozen Empire. The first time the Ghostbusters see Pukey is in the new ghostbusting facility designed to house and study spirits. Pukey has its cell, but it looks harmless enough. Pukey is a small ghost with a round body and stubby limbs. To be 100% transparent, Pukey looks like a Mr. Potato Head doll.

The Ghostbusters don't pay Pukey much mind other than thinking the little ghost is cute, but the film focuses on the spirit enough that audiences can guess Pukey will be back. Naturally, the ghost does make another appearance later in the film. Under Garraka's control, Pukey attacks the Ghostbusters by, well, puking on them.

10 Best Animated Ghostbusters Villains, Ranked
With Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire finding inspiration from past animated series, it’s time to reflect on some of the cartoons’ most chilling villains.
  • The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man is one of the most iconic Ghostbusters ghosts ever
  • He first appeared in the original Ghostbusters (1984)

The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man is probably the first thing people think of when Ghostbusters is mentioned. He is the mascot of the Stay Puft Quality Marshmallows brand. Before the ghost appears in the original film, the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man can be seen on a bag of marshmallows and an advertisement near the firehouse. Long-term Ghostbusters fans know that the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man is actually Gozer, an apocalyptic Sumerian deity, manifesting into a physical form.

Needless to say, the original Ghostbusters owes a lot of its success to the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man and, since his first appearance, few ghosts have managed to live up to him. Sadly, in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Frozen Empire, the tiny Stay-Puft Marshmallow Men have more or less been reduced to fun Easter eggs. They're depicted as ghost vermin who just want to cause mediocre destruction, but they're relatively harmless. They are cute, though, so fans still love them.

5 Hell's Kitchen Has Its Very Own Dragon

The Ghostbusters chase the Sewer Dragon through the streets
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 1 hour and 56 minutes
  • The film was directed by Gil Kenan

Frozen Empire opens up with a high-speed chase through the busy streets of New York City. The Spenglers chase down a massive, flying ghost through the streets in the Ectomobile. Phoebe identifies the ghost as the Hell's Kitchen Sewer Dragon. This ghost is enormous, fast, and resembles a Chinese-inspired dragon. This design is so cool, the main movie poster features it front and center. The Sewer Dragon is more prominent on the poster than the main villain, Garraka.

Arguably, the Sewer Dragon is one of the more intriguing ghosts that's popped up in the Ghostbusters franchise in quite a while. It makes for an exciting opening scene. The high-speed chase and battling the massive dragon from within a moving vehicle is fun to watch. Sadly, the dragon doesn't get much more screen time once it's captured. Hopefully, fans get to see more of the sewer dragon in future Ghostbusters films, because it could probably carry a movie on its own.

10 Scariest Ghostbusters Moments, Ranked
Ghostbusters is a highly beloved franchise. While it’s pretty lighthearted, it is a horror comedy with plenty of really scary and notable moments.
  • The Possessor is one of the most dangerous ghosts in Frozen Empire
  • The audience never sees what the Possessor looks like

The Possessor is another ghost the Ghostbusters are introduced to while exploring the new ghostbusting facility. Like Pukey, the Possessor has its own cell. Noticeably, though, the cell seems empty. That's because the Possessor doesn't manifest a form, unlike most of the other ghosts in the film. Instead, the Possessor possesses the inanimate objects around it. As its name suggests, it can possess anything.

The only indication that the Possessor is moving from object to object is a red light that leaps onto an object and disappears inside it. Most of the time, it goes completely unnoticed, even by the Ghostbusters. Garraka uses the Possessor more than most of the ghosts because of its usefulness. It nearly succeeds in animating a recording of the chant Garraka needs to free himself. It also takes control of one of the lion statues sitting outside the New York City Public Library and one of the Ghostbusters' proton packs.

3 Phoebe Finds A Ghost Friend In Melody

Phoebe separates her soul from her body in Frozen Empire
  • McKenna Grace reprises her role as Phoebe Spengler in Frozen Empire
  • Emily Alyn Lind plays the ghost girl, Melody

After the Sewer Dragon incident, Callie decides her daughter is too young for ghostbusting and benches Phoebe. Ghostbusting has become Phoebe's entire personality, so she takes the hit exceptionally hard. Phoebe is one of the smartest Ghostbusters the franchise has ever seen, so being removed from active duty sends Phoebe spiraling. Shortly after Callie fires her, Phoebe plays chess with a ghost in the park. The ghost manifests in front of Phoebe as a teenage girl covered in flames named Melody. Desperate for someone to talk to, Phoebe forms a friendship with Melody.

Melody is an intriguing ghost because she desperately wants to move on to whatever's next so that she can be with her family again. She died in a house fire that she accidentally caused. The fire killed her entire family, but due to the guilt she felt, she couldn't move on with them. Melody isn't a bad person, but she finds herself working with Garraka anyway because he promises to help her move on. She is an empathetic and complex character, but seeing her form a friendship with Phoebe and then betray her is one of the biggest plot twists in the movie.

Bill Murray Was 'Really Enthusiastic' to Return for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan shares the story behind Bill Murray signing on for the sequel.
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire blended the new Afterlife cast with the original cast
  • Billy Murry, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts all returned to play their original characters

One of the coolest ghosts featured in Frozen Empire didn't get more than a few seconds of screen time. When the Spenglers go to visit the new research facility for the first time, they pass by several cells that house different types of ghosts. This is where they first meet the Possessor and Pukey. They also pass by a dark cell that's difficult to see into. Inside the cell, a truly unsettling ghost resides.

This creature seems to disappear into the darkness. Its eyes are hollow, and its mouth opens to reveal long, jagged "teeth" that also double for lips. It has long, threatening fingers as well. Its spindly appearance makes it look much more sinister than the rest of the ghosts. The movie also does not explain this ghost whatsoever, leaving it shrouded in mystery. It tries to escape from the facility, but the movie doesn't elaborate on what happened to it. It was a scarier design than Ghostbusters usually has, but hopefully, it'll make another appearance in a sequel.

1 Garraka Is An Epic & Terrifying Villain

Garraka is the main villain of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and he is truly terrifying. From his appearance to the way he can control all other ghosts to the way he spreads ice across the land, Garraka is a force to be reckoned with. Garraka controls the Death Chill, a force that has the power to kill with fear alone. The Death Chill can freeze over anything, including New York City in the middle of summer. All of Garraka's victims fall to the chilling ice that can freeze on contact alone.

Garraka isn't a ghost, but a deity with awesome power. He is massive, with long, curved horns, jagged teeth, and gnarly claws that could slice someone open with ease. Garraka is uneasy to look at and that's the point. It's a shame that the ending of the film seemed rushed. Garraka seemed so powerful one minute, and then the next, he was gone. Hopefully, he'll make a reappearance in a future film, because he just seems too cool to dispose of in a single movie.
