Analyzing Automotive ECUs and Networks With CANalyzer
CANalyzer is the comprehensive software tool with intuitive operation for analysis and stimulation of network communication in automotive industry and related industries.
Use CANalyzer to check whether and what type of communication is occurring on the network. In addition to sending or recording data, interactive ECU diagnosis is also possible. For every application it offers powerful basic functions for beginners as well as extensive detailed functions for experienced users.
Advantages
- Intuitive operation
- Easy observation, analysis and supplemention of the data traffic
- Flexible analysis capabilities by configurable function blocks, e.g. Filter, Interactive Generator or Replay
- Seamless logging of bus data and replay for offline analysis
- Flexible programmable with CAPL, e.g. for extensive analysis tasks
Application Areas
Analysis of Information Exchange and Communication Processes
The aim of the analysis is to evaluate information exchanged between ECUs and software functions. The information exchange can be realized via networking technologies (bus systems, networks) or via hardware connections (digital/analog).
The level of detail ranges from physical values (current, voltage, etc.) to digitized binary information on protocol packets to signals represented symbolically, which can be displayed in CANalyzer with the help of various analysis windows.
Diagnostics With CANalyzer
In CANalyzer, you can analyze ECU communication on the diagnostic side. CANalyzer supports all relevant automotive networks and transport protocols.
You can perform diagnostic tests semi-automated as well as interactively. For interactive tests, a diagnostic window is available for all important use cases, e.g. read fault memory, variant coding, OBD-II.
Stimulating the System Under Test (SUT)
With CANalyzer, you can observe, analyze and influence the data traffic of ECUs. Through preconfigured user interfaces, you send simple messages and signal values to your system. Based on this capability, stimulation with CANalyzer has several objectives:
- Reproducible stimulation of your System Under Test (SUT)
- Extension of test scenarios for analysis
- Determination of control parameters
Highlights Version 18
AUTOSAR Viewer
- New analysis tool for viewing Classic and Adaptive AUTOSAR description files
- Artifacts for service-oriented communication on Ethernet are supported
Analysis
- The State Tracker offers the graphical display of state changes
- A search for symbol names is available in the main window of the Data Window
Logging
- Logging files can now also be written and read in ASAM MDF 4.2 format
- Timestamps in the name of the logging file can be specified in ISO 8601 format
Option Ethernet
- The Protocol Monitor offers new views for validation results and SOME/IP artifacts
- In offline mode, channel numbers can now also be assigned to network-based port numbers

Analyzing of Security-Protected ECUs and Networks
Security mechanisms in the ECU secure the vehicle and its functions against manipulation and unauthorized access. However, for analyzing and diagnostic purposes, it must be possible for an authorized individual to participate in vehicle communication during development and later operation.
With the Security Manager, Vector offers a uniform solution that is used identically for many Vector tools. In addition to CANalyzer also CANoe, CANape, vFlash, Indigo and CANoe.DiVa use the Security Manager.
Supported Use Cases
- Communication: SecOC − with only a focus on analysis
- Diagnostics: Authentication
- Diagnostics: Variant Coding
- TLS: Simulation of Client and Server
- TLS: TLS Observer using Master Secret
- TLS: DoIP over TLS
- MACsec: Standard 802.1 AE 2018
- MACsec: Key Agreement (MKA)-Protokoll 802.1.x-2020
.
- IPsec: IKEv2 support for certificate based peer authentication, dead peer detection, IKE fragmentation and IKE rekeying
- IPsec: Import of StrongSwan IPsec configurations
- IPsec: Full control of the Security Policy Database
Training Class for CANalyzer.Ethernet and the Security Manager
This new course of the VectorAcademy starts with an overview of automotive security mechanisms and their implementation with the TLS, DTLS, IPsec, and MACsec protocols. The focus is the practical application of the Security Manager in CANoe and CANalyzer.Ethernet for measuring and troubleshooting security-protected communication.
