The numbers played on these broadcasts indicate that the band did not play much from the old book - actually the only pieces being Half Past Jumping Time, Non-Alcoholic and Apple Honey. The Goof And I was the first arrangement Al Cohn wrote for the band. The rest is all from the new library written by people like Shorty Rogers, Tiny Kahn and of course Ralph Burns. With the exception of / Got It BadMcCall's songs were to my knowledge never recorded in studios. Serge Chaloff's barytone is generously featured, so is Woody's alto sax and clarinet. The tenor solos will offer pleasant guesswork for the worthy listener, trumpet solos are by Shorty Rogers and the mighty Ernie Royal and Earl Swope was the band's main trombone soloist. Don Lamond's dynamic drumming is a swinging joy throughout the record. So, ladies and gentlemen, for your listening pleasure - Woody Herman and his Second Herd!
