Jim Young rescued programs at three schools. Arizona had gone through three straight losing seasons when Young arrived. In his first year, 1973, he led Arizona to a co-championship with Brigham Young in the Western Athletic Conference.
In four years at Arizona, his record was 31-13. His 1975 team was fifth in the nation in offense.
Young moved to Purdue, and in five years, 1977-81, posted a 38-19-1 record. He had Purdue in three bowl games and won them all.
His next stop was Army, which had just gone through three losing seasons. In eight years, 1983-90, he had a 51-39-1 record. This included a 2-1 record in bowl games.
His career record, covering 16 years, was 120-71-2, a percentage of .627. He returned to Arizona in 1992-94 as an assistant coach.
Young lettered at Bowling Green in 1956. He obtained a bachelor's and a master's degree at Bowling Green.
