It's good to be the King (of lovers)
I saw this movie as a kid and I still enjoy it today. I have always had a weakness for comedies about goofballs who try to pass themselves off as something better...all the while conning the big shots into thinking they something more than they are....you know, like we all do at work every day or when we write a resume. This and "The Court Jester" are among my favorites of this genre. Absolutely cowardly fools who fall bass-akward into the good graces of the upper crust who are just as foolish. It's been done with "Being There", "Dumb and Dumber" a host of other films. When it comes to playing bumbling cowards, it's hard to beat Bob Hope. When Hope plays like he is afraid, he doesn't ACT afraid...he is afraid. In this film (I'll try not ... I saw this movie as a kid and I still enjoy it today. When Hope plays like he is afraid, he doesn't ACT afraid...he is afraid. In this film (I'll try not to reveal too many plot points), Hope plays a poor tailor who works for the great lover Casanova. When non-payment of debts sends Casanova "on the lam", the Innkeeper (also owed big money by Mr. C.) hatches a plan to pass Hope off as Casanova (see? It's funny already), with the expected results. The supporting cast helps make this a balanced comedy. Joan Fontaine plays it straight as Francesca Bruni...her quips and insults make the show all the better. She let's the lines do the work and doesn't try to be funny (a big downfall of serious actors playing comedy). And you can't have a good comedy without the threatening bad guys, otherwise Hope's fear is not effective. Basal Rathbone, Raymond Burr etc. add to that factor quite well...once again, playing it straight and letting the plot do the comedy work. Rathbone is basically repeating his role in "The Court Jester"...and why not? He's was a brilliant actor and expert swordsman who gave lessons and tips to other actors doing swordplay scenes. Don't be fooled by the 2005 date on the DVD. This movie was released in 1954. Sadly almost all the actors are gone....so it would have been a particularly tough shoot in 2005. There are others who try to do these these types of movies, but many times "serious" actors just can't do comedy. You can't try to be funny, you have to let go and be funny. As one actor reportedly said on his death bed, "Dying is tough, but comedy is tougher."

He portrays Pippo Popolino a lowly tailor who is forced to enter the glamorous and dangerous world of Venetian high society, to compromise the honor of the fair lady: Donna Elena Di Gambetta (Audrey Dalton). Joan Fontaine is very effective in the supporting role of Francesca, “Pippo’s love interest”and displays a surprising flair for comedy.Its fun and laughter all the way, as the one and only Bob Hope swims through the canals of Venice masquerading as the 18th century world’s greatest lover Casanova.
