Four updates from the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) community this week – including President Bill Clinton’s trip to Kigali, Rwanda to attend the 30th Commemoration of the Rwandan genocide; Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton’s call for improved child care accessibility; Dr. Chelsea Clinton’s advocacy for Black maternal health; and historic federal funding for three CGI commitment-makers and partners. 

Four CGI Commitment-makers and partners to receive funding from Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund 

Last week, the Biden-Harris Administration made a landmark announcement of $20 billion in awards for clean energy, climate solutions, and lower energy costs – all targeted at communities that are historically underserved:

  • Opportunity Finance Network received $2.29 billion for its nationwide network of community lenders. Read more.
  • Native CDFI Network received $400 million for its national plan tailored specifically to serve Native communities. Read more.
  • Appalachian Community Capital received $500 million for low-income rural communities impacted by declines in the fossil fuel industry. Read more.
  • Inclusiv received $1.87 billion for its network of community development credit unions. Read more.

New York Amsterdam News: Dr. Chelsea Clinton, CGI commitment-makers driving action on Black maternal health

At a convening led by CGI commitment-makers Fund for Public Health NYC and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Health, Dr. Chelsea Clinton emphasized the urgency of the Black maternal health crisis. In 2022, these commitment-makers launched a birth equity initiative to reduce birth inequities for Black pregnant persons and women in Brooklyn. Read more in the NY Amsterdam News. 

ABC NY: Secretary Clinton advocates for more accessible NYC childcare 

This week at the Institute of Global Politics’ Women’s Initiative at Columbia University, Secretary Clinton recognized city-wide efforts to fight for universal Pre-K. Read more. 

The Hill: President Clinton leads Presidential Delegation marking the 30th anniversary of 1994 Rwandan Genocide 

Last week, President Biden announced a Presidential Delegation to attend the 30th Commemoration of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide in Kigali, Rwanda. On April 7, President Clinton led the delegation in Rwanda to mark 30 years since the Rwandan genocide. Read more.
