Culture Club was an 80's phenomenon, and "The Boy", more commonly known as Boy George, quickly became an 80's icon. The band scored with colorful, upbeat, easily digestible pop-rock; and Boy George became the world's best-known, and for a while best-loved, cross-dresser. At holiday season in 1984, George participated in the Band-Aid project; and when he joyfully sang "Throw your arms around the world at Christmas time!", the world felt and shared in his joy. Ah, but pop stardom can be a fleeting thing. The band was torn apart by George's drug addiction and dissent between George and drummer Jon Moss. They released the album, "From Luxury To Heartache", in 1986, and later broke up. A shame too, because "Luxury", with its harder, louder sound, was a terrific album. Boy George then pursued a solo career, of which I was unaware except for his hit with the title song from "The Crying Game" in 1992.
"From Luxury To Heartache" apparently paved the way for this 1995 solo album, "Cheapness And Beauty", mostly composed of glam rock tracks. All songs were written by George and one of his producers, John Themis, except "Funtime", which was written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop. These glam tracks are pretty straightforward and uncomplicated, just good fun rock. Two of them, "Evil Is So Civilised" and "Blindman", have a little darker grungy tinge, and another one, "Your Love Is What I Am", stands out due to its dramatic backing voices and a brief but blistering guitar solo. Of the five tracks that are not really glam rock, two are more pop-oriented, with "Same Thing In Reverse" leaning only slightly toward a country sound, and the album's title song featuring melodious, rippling piano. The remaining three tracks are slower ones, nicely done with strings, all pretty serious. George's vocals sound to me just about as good as they did in Culture Club, with my favorite being the aggressively teasing harmonized vocal in "Funtime". And just for added amusement, there are phone messages played in some of the spaces between tracks.
I found the lyrics surprising - more revealing, meaningful and on-target than I expected. Of course, there are those that are just for fun ("Baby baby we like your lips/Baby baby we like your pants/All aboard for funtime"). "Sad" is about revenge over a bad relationship: "You were heading for a spin/So you tried to drag me in...Well I got my revenge/My name in neon lights/You got what you deserve/Your sad and miserable life". Some relationships seem promising at first but just aren't meant to be: "I hear you married some Danish girl/I'm so glad that it wasn't me...You break your promise easily". "Same Thing In Reverse" points out that gay and straight relationships are not that different from each other: "Your brother doesn't understand/How you could love another man...It's the same thing in reverse/Nothing better, nothing worse". Self-esteem is important: "Mother hold your tears/'Cause I am happy now...Father it's too late/To make a man of me/I love against the gods/But I don't scare too easily". And let's not forget bourgeois religious hypocrisy: "Behind the perfect picture/Lie fanatical beliefs/White sheets and burning crosses/Strange fruit, blood on the land/Free will, twisted religion/Do you love your fellow man...Sometimes I cry/'Cause evil is so civilised".
I am impressed. I paid a nice sum for this baby and I have not regretted it for one second.

Boy George. Genre magazine called it brilliant. OUT had him on the cover. Jay Leno had the Boy for half his show performing some of the songs. The book,"Take It Like A Man",was high on the best-seller list. Everything was going great. It was a truly magnificent comeback, then tragedy struck. The Boy was called back to England at the beginning of a successful tour to deal with a murder investigation involving his brother. It's all part of the mystique that seems to have grown around Mr O'Dowd. Now, to the music. Straight ahead, in your face guitar driven Big Rock mixed with insightful ballads. Probably one of the best of the 90's.Rivalling the best neo-punk of the Pansy Division.Rivalling the sweetness of Culture Club. Still is good after all these years. Excellent liner booklet with even a picture of Quentin Crisp standing over a victim of violence in old NYC, and photos of other minions of the scene. Favorite songs. If I Could Fly,Evil Is So Civilized,Genocide Peroxide,Same Thing in Reverse,Funtime...all of them, what the heck.It pulls no punches. Take that!Welcome to the human race.

New & old song!

Those who know the Boy only from Culture Club have missed out on his most diverse musical output, far different than the reggae-tinged sacrine dance pop he became famous for. His solo outings have ranged from androgenous dance a la the Club (i.e. Sold), theater songs (i.e. Taboo), DJ techno mixes (i.e. The Martyr Mixes), to acoustic gay & Hindu-themed love songs (i.e. Unrecoupable One Man Bandit) but Cheapness & Beauty remains an underlooked side avenue of guitar-driven hard rock that followed his successful single "The Crying Game". Though Unrecoupable One Man Band would follow from the same band, it was largely demos & acoustic live favorites & lacked the hard edge & completeness that Cheapness & Beauty had ... sadly, as this is a wonderful new face for the eternal boy of many faces. The song titles give it all as to the mood to expect: "Satan", "Sad", "God Don't Hold a Grudge", "Genocide", "If I Could Fly", "Evil Is So Civilized", "Blindman" "Unfinished Business" & "Funtime" penned by Iggy Pop & David Bowie. In many ways this might the more instrospective side of BG oft troubled life, albeit many of his songs have been introspective but always hidden under the androgynous image, tongue-in-cheek jestfulness & dance beat. The androgyny is still here but BG is allowing himself to musically cut loose in ways never before attempted. In his solo career BG let the gay themes flow more openly starting with this release, probably because not finding himself getting on the charts he didn't have to worry about what would keep him from it or what people would think of him, particularly obvious with the delightful transgendered anthem "Same Thing In Reverse". We expect BG to sing about sexuality & its comforting to hear him doing it finally. Glam influenced 80's rock guitars lace the album creating something more akin to Alice Cooper while BG doesn't change his soft singing style, considering glam is in many ways perfect for his style & the mix works well for the most part ... though if BG has a hard side to his persona it never comes out in his voice with rockin' out not a word in his vocabulary. While, underneath the rock edge is some diversity, to be pushed to the limit with Unrecoupable One Man Bandit, that never get enough appreciation including electronic bubbles in place of guitar solos (i.e. "Funtime"), soft ballads ("If I Could Fly", "Cheapness & Beauty", "Il Adore") while "Same Thing In Reverse" is actually a folksy tune with a violin & "Unfinished Business" has a mandolin strumming against an acoustic guitar & orchestra. This is a successful album but not successful in the desired financial way & thus BG found himself dropped from Virgin records & largely vanishing back to the underground where he started. It's shame because he really has a lot to offer beyond the make-up, but what started as an asset also became a straight-jacket because though glam has make-up'd lead singers ... not this type. For those that don't believe BG is good away from his old band or outside of a dance beat should be warned!

THIS ALBUM SHATTERED ALL MOLDS THAT ANYONE HELD BOY GEORGE IN. IT WON MANY AWARDS, AND IT REALLY SHOWS THE ROCK/PUNK SIDE OF THE BOY, WITHOUT LOSING THAT BEAUTIFUL, SOULFUL VOICE!

If you like George to be rockin', This is a good one. Most all of the songs were written about someone in his life.
