The sun is out, and the girlies are dusting off their thong sandals. At least, Elle Fanning is.

This week, the actor stepped out in New York City in a breezy spring outfit composed of classic basics—and of course, the controversial shoe. On her feet were Miu Miu’s Riviere sandals, with black leather soles and straps of bright red rope cord.

Fanning is far from the only It girl who’s jumped on the recent comeback of the thong sandal—the stylish Olsen twins basically created a fashion cult with their own pair from the Row. But Fanning’s Miu Mius were different, in that they were reminiscent of another controversial shoe: the dad sandal. Made from red rope, like the kind one uses to rock climb or pitch a tent, the sandals—were they not nearly $900 and elegantly styled in the glossy boutiques of the luxury fashion house—looked like they could have been yanked off a nice middle-aged American dad in Yosemite.

To add a touch of femininity to the look, the star of The Great wore the sporty sandals with a frilly white pointelle cami with delicate lace trim, plus slouchy low-rise blue mom jeans, cuffed at the bottom. Over the top, she layered on a crisp white dress shirt, sleeves loosely rolled up.

Fanning continued the simple tones with a black woven leather crossbody bag with a gold zipper. She added an unexpected pop of color with some massive square sunglasses in a milky lavender. The Pop art–inspired shades matched the layers of colorful beaded bracelets on her wrist.

The rest of her look was casually chic, but if Fanning’s shoe choice is indicative of any larger trends, we might be in for another Adam Sandler summer.
