Excitement is building among fans for Nag Ashwin’s epic sci-fi dystopian film Kalki 2898 AD, featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, Deepika Padukone and Disha Patani in pivotal roles. Now, the film’s makers have unveiled the first look of Amitabh Bachchan’s character, marking a significant milestone towards the highly awaited release of this year’s most anticipated Indian film.
The 69-second teaser opens with Bachchan, dressed in earthy tones, seated in a cave, praying to a Shiva linga. In the background, amidst calming background music, a child’s voice is heard asking him, “Can you not die? Are you divine? Who are you?”
As tension builds, Bachchan’s deep voice asserts, “Since ancient times, I have awaited the arrival of the Avatar. I am Guru Drona’s son. Ashwatthama,” he declares firmly.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) earlier in the day, Bachchan wrote, “It’s been an experience for me like no other. The mind to think such a product, the execution, the exposure to modern technology and above all the company of colleagues with stratospheric Super star presence.”
The first look was unveiled on Star Sports before the start of Sunday evening’s IPL 2024 match between Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans. Earlier in the day, the makers had also released an announcement poster about the first look unveiling event. In the poster, Big B was depicted completely covered in cloth and wearing a mask, seated inside a temple-like structure.
A few months ago, Ashwin had made some interesting revelations about the epic science-fiction film, promising that Kalki 2898 AD would be an extraordinary visual spectacle.

While addressing the Synapse 2024 event in Gurgaon recently, Ashwin said, “I just wish that there was more tech to help us make this film, like three-four years back when we were in preproduction. We are creating this new world like… I am just looking at this picture right now on the screen, and all these different worlds that we are trying to create, we work with so many different concept artists and giving prompts, obviously, again, in a very personal, one-on-one sort of way, and try to give references and build this world.”
Bankrolled by C Aswani Dutt under the banner of Vyjayanthi Movies, the music for “Kalki” is composed by Santhosh Narayanan. Despite the initial announcement in January that the film would be released globally on May 9, 2024, it seems unlikely as there have been no subsequent updates on the matter thus far.
