Those who have enjoyed earlier Flecktones recordings will not be
disappointed with Three Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Bela Fleck has
stuck with the formula that made their previous records successful:
complex, tight grooves wrapped in a very musical, user-friendly
package. The Flecktones still suffer from the departure of
keyboardist/chromatic harmonica player Howard Levy, who provided the
band with needed additional musical colors and textures. Guest
appearances by Bruce Hornsby (no vocals) and Branford Marsalis help
fill this void. As always, the musicianship is excellent, and all
players involved have ample space with which to display their
virtuosity.
As usual, Béla Fleck and crew deliver a consistently rewarding
album that defies categorization and revels in the latest studio
technology, broadening his vision of the banjo as a lead instrument in
other styles besides bluegrass. From the opening cut "Vix 9," where he
sustains chords indefinitely while continuing to play the melody, to
Future Man's collection of sounds utilizing his Synth-Axe (nifty
thunder noises and an array of percussive enhancements) Three Flew Over
the Cuckoo's Nest is a musical and technological delight. Much like his
previous releases, Fleck's latest album draws heavily from jazz motifs
displayed on the gentle "At Last We Meet Again" with its
improvisational interludes and the piano (Bruce Hornsby) and banjo
interplay on "Spunky and Clorissa." Branford Marsalis shows up on
several cuts to lend his ever fluid and graceful sax skills. There's
even a rap tune entitled "The Message" that is interesting for the
music, if not the rather typical, though truthful, lyrics. Future Man
is given a feature spot with his new agey "Interlude (Return of the
Ancient Ones)" and Victor Wooten is still one of the most astounding
bassists I've ever heard with his heavy, yet playful rhythms and
incorporation of distinct melodies subtly lying underneath Fleck's
expressive banjo picking. The tenor bass on "Peace, Be Still" lightly
underscores the evocative, mysterious mood brought on by this piece.
Though I will miss former band member Howard Levy, Fleck proves that
their continuation as a trio can still be a potent and powerful force
in the music world with some of the most inventive production work this
side of Bill Laswell.
