Personal Correspondence

Personal Correspondence subseries, 1938-1958; 2003 (1.4 lin. ft.) consists of correspondence between Meier and his parents and brother as well as with his friends. His long, detailed letters written while he was a student at Oberlin College in Ohio discuss Meier's relationship with other students, his professors, readings, examinations, papers he wrote, extracurricular activities, and in general, the development of his thinking processes while attending a liberal arts college. Correspondence from the late 1940's when Meier was attending Columbia University in pursuit of his Master's degree describe his courses and current events including his opinions about black related issues. Meier continued his course work at Columbia for his doctoral degree; correspondence during this time discuss his research for his dissertation. Letters from Meier's years at Fisk University describe his responsibilities and complaints as a research assistant to Charles S. Johnson, his experiences applying for a job, and his belief that his resume may have caused people to believe he was of African-American ancestry.

Education

The subseries Education, 1936-1957, n.d. (5 lin. ft.) encompasses Meier's report cards from grade and high schools and graduation related material. His files for Oberlin College include reports and printed matter regarding a student effort to desegregate barber shops on campus. Meier was secretary of the committee that spearheaded this action. Meier's studies for his Master's degree at Columbia is documented by two black history papers he wrote on the black church and on Booker T. Washington, in addition to a copy of his thesis, "The Emergence of Negro Nationalism: A Study of Ideologies - From the American Revolution to the First World War" (1948).

Most significantly in this subseries are several drafts, including the final version, of Meier's dissertation, "Negro Racial Thought in the Age of Booker T. Washington, ca. 1880-1915." There are approximately ten versions of the dissertation; the final and most complete version has been filed first, followed by the other versions. Most of the drafts are not intact and only a few are dated, which made it difficult to assemble completed drafts. Adding to the difficulty in organizing the drafts is the fact that versions of book and dissertation chapters were frequently mixed together during the process of preparing the book Meier wrote based on his dissertation, Negro Racial Thought in the Age of Booker T. Washington, ca. 1880-1915. Thus, it was not always clear which chapter versions were written for the book and which for the dissertation. A sampling of Meier's research notes based on his reading has been retained (one out of eight boxes). Correspondence between Meier and Paul Partington concerning W.E.B. DuBois is also to be found in this series.

Teaching Career

The series TEACHING CAREER, 1932-1995 (3.2 lin. ft.) spans Meier's long career as a history professor at six colleges. Tougaloo College is represented by minutes Meier took of College Council meetings, an article he wrote after his departure about his evaluation of Tougaloo fulfilling its role as an educational institution for African Americans, printed material and photographs. For Fisk University there is correspondence with Preston King, Meier's undergraduate student discussing their common interests in black intellectual thought, Meier's participation in civil rights activities, as well as King's dispute with the United States military and his self exile to London. Meier's position as Charles S. Johnson's research assistant is documented by notes prepared for Johnson's speeches and articles, and correspondence pertaining to Negro History Week celebrations. There is also material documenting a course on African-American history. Meier's annual reports provide information on his teaching career at Morgan State College.

Kent State University served as Meier's "home port" for twenty-five years and is where he trained a significant number of graduate students. These files reveal Meier's relationship with his graduate students and includes assessments by commitees regarding the acceptance of the applicant as a graduate student. Some correspondence between students and Meier, members of the dissertation committee, and administrators regarding students' status and progress, especially at the dissertation writing level is available. A few files include essay exams, reading lists, administrative material, job references, lists of dissertation committee members and their assessment of the student, and papers (some published). Correspondence indicates an ongoing relationship with some of his students after they obtained their Ph.D.'s and secured professional positions. Students represented in the collection include Elsa Barkley Brown, Leroy Davis, William Hine, Reginald Kearney, Paul Lammermeier, Christopher Reed, and Tyrone Tillery. Lastly, these files include letters of gratitude written for Meier's 1993 retirement.

Additional files for Kent State University includes material Meier distributed for his honors section on the history of civilization, such as chapter notes, study and review questions, exam questions, and lecture notes. For a colloquium he taught called "Black Protest Movement in the Twentieth Century" there are assignments, quizzes, bibliographies, and outlines for class discussions. Papers by Harold Baron, Robert Curvin, George Wiley and others from a conference on civil rights that Meier organized are included. Meier's efforts in building the Kent State University library's African-American collection between 1969-1986 through the purchase of microfilm is also documented.

Atheneum, Negro in American Life Series

The Atheneum, Negro in American Life Series, 1967-1976 (.8 lin. ft.) subseries documents Atheneum's efforts to reprint books in the field of black studies in paperback format (1966-1971), and original studies on historical and contemporary topics in African-American life after 1968. Correspondence concerns Meier's discussions with Atheneum editor, Robert Zenowich, regarding paperback rights for the reprints, the writing of new introductions, and prospects for inclusion in the series. For the Books Published section of this subseries, Meier's editorial comments to the author and discussions at various stages of the writing and editing of the book are included. For the Proposals Rejected portion of the subseries, Meier's explanations for the rejection and ways to improve the manuscript, or his encouragement of additional work, which Atheneum did not receive, are included.

University of Illinois Press - Blacks in the New World Series

The subseries University of Illinois Press, Blacks in the New World, 1967-1998 (8 lin. ft.) is the most extensive in this series, documenting Meier's role as editor of approximately sixty five books published by this press, averaging two books a year. The subseries has been divided into two units -- Books Published and Manuscripts Not Published. The latter includes files for proposals that were rejected at the outset as being outside the scope of the series or for other reasons. In some instances, a contract was signed but after substantial revisions were made to the manuscript with numerous editorial suggestions by Meier, either the writer or Illinois Press decided against completing the manuscript under Meier's direction. Occasionally a different press actually published these works.

Because Atheneum discontinued its Negro in American Life series in 1971 and the University of Illinois Press had inaugurated a black series publication in 1972, Meier approached Richard L. Wentworth, Editor and Associate Director of the University of Illinois Press, with the idea of the latter press establishing a series focusing on black history with Meier as editor. Announcements indicated that this was a continuation of the series Meier had edited for Atheneum. In all cases, if Meier had begun the editorial process for a book in the Atheneum series, he then completed the work for the University of Illinois Press. Examples of books published during this transitional period are Walter B. Weare, Black Business in the New South: A Social History of the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1973, and David Katzman, Before the Ghetto: Black Detroit in the Nineteenth Century, 1973, and Carl R. Osthaus, Freedman, Philanthropy, and Fraud: A History of the Freedman's Savings Bank, 1976. In 1991 John H. Bracey joined Meier as co-editor of the series, and after twenty-five years of service to this press, Meier retired in 1998.

The University of Illinois Press subseries includes correspondence between Meier, Wentworth and Bracey, concerning manuscript solicitations, policy issues, and the Elliot Rudwick Award. Both the Books Published and Manuscripts Not Published units of the subseries contain correspondence among the authors, Meier, and Wentworth, and sometimes other scholars who served as readers, discussing the submission of manuscripts for publication, Meier's suggestions to authors to improve the manuscripts, and Meier's recommendations whether or not to publish. Occasionally, Meier advised publication but if authors could not revise the manuscript according to Meier's standards, he later advised against publication. Files may also contain the table of contents or proposal for the book, as well as a few of the author's reprints. While the total number of books published as represented in this series is over sixty titles, there are files for hundreds of proposals rejected or contracts signed which did not result in published books.

University Publications of America - Black Studies Research Sources

The subseries University Publications of America - Black Studies Research Sources, 1982-1998 (1 lin. ft.) deals with the selection of archival collections for inclusion in the micropublication series from archival and manuscript repositories. Meier and Elliott Rudwick served as co-editors - John H. Bracey later replaced Rudwick - and correspondence indicates that the co-editors frequently conferred with UPA president John Moscato. Examples of the microfilmed collections are the records of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Congress of Racial Equality; civil rights files from the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. FBI Files. Correspondence discusses negotiations between UPA and the repository, progress made during filming; printed advertising announcements describing the completed work.

Conference Papers, Speeches and Lectures

The Conference Papers, Speeches and Lectures, subseries, 1945-1995 (1.4 lin. ft.) includes addresses and papers Meier, occasionally with Rudwick, presented at professional meetings, universities and other research institutions and before community groups. The topics span the entire gamut of his research interests and include Booker T. Washington, Meier's 1962 debate with Malcolm X, the history of the African-American protest movement including non-violent direct action, civil rights, NAACP, CORE, and research themes based upon his and Meier's book, Black Detroit and the Rise of the UAW. Of significance are Meier's comments referring to a paper read by Louis R. Harlan entitled, "The Problem of Interpreting Booker T. Washington, A Biographical Perspective." The speeches have been arranged chronologically.

Professional Affiliations

The Professional Affiliations subseries, 1952-1998, (1970-1992 bulk) (1.6 lin. ft.) reflects Meier's active participation in several national historical associations over a period of years. American Historical Asociation files document his role on the 1972 Program Committee, as a member of the J. Franklin Jameson Prize Committee (1990), his participation in the 1998 session on historian Benjamin Quarles and also in 1998, the presentation of the AHA Award for Scholarly Distinction. Meier's 1990 chairmanship of the Organization of American Historians' Program Committee is documented through correspondence files. The Southern Historical Association files detail Meier's service on the 1980 Program Committee, and his chairmanship of the session "Black Coal Miners in the Southern Applachians" (1986), as well as a copy of a 1986 interview conducted by John H. Roper concerning Meier's long association with the SHA. This subseries concludes with files of Meier's presidency (1992) of the SHA and with photographs of Meier and colleagues at an unidentified meeting.

Civil Rights Movement Research Files

Of particular interest is the CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT RESEARCH FILES, 1940-1995, (bulk 1942-1979) (14 lin. ft.) which includes an Interviews subseries, 1961-1985, (1961-1971 bulk) (.8 lin. ft.), consisting of hundreds of interviews Meier and his colleague, Elliott Rudwick, conducted with individuals regarding their roles in the civil rights movement. The bulk of the interviews were conducted for Meier and Rudwick's book CORE: A Study in the Civil Rights Movement, 1942-1968. Included are interviews conducted with CORE leaders at both the national level and local chapters. Other organizations represented in the interviews are the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Southern Regional Council, Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, the National Action Council, and the Council of Federated Organizations. Among the numerous interviewees are: Julian Bond, John H. Bracey, Gordon Carey, Ronald Corvin, Gloster Current, Robert Curvin, St. Clair Drake, Leslie Dunbar, James and Lula Farmer, Charles Hamilton, Aaron Henry, Herbert Hill, Norman Hill, Carl Holman, Genevive Hughes, Roy and Doris Innis, Sam and Fredericka Kushner, Charles McDew, Floyd McKissick, Charles Oldham, Carl Rachlin, Marvin Rich, James R. Robinson, Ralph Rosenfeld, Phyllis Ryan, Mark Solomon, Herbert Wright, Andrew Young and Whitney Young. A complete list is available as an appendix to this finding aid.

Interviews were conducted either by telephone or in person and were not taped. They were open ended and varied in length from a single page to approximately 30 pages. The interviews are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically for individuals who were interviewed on more than one occasion.

Bayard Rustin

The Bayard Rustin subseries, 1942-1979 (1 lin. ft.) reflects Meier's long-standing interest in Rustin as a civil rights leader, and includes Meier's interviews concerning Rustin's role in CORE and non-violent protest, Jonathan Gottleib's manuscript on Rustin and A. Philip Randolph, and notes relating to Rustin's participation in the 1943 and 1963 March on Washington movements. Rustin's role with the Fellowship of Reconcilation (FOR), a non-violent antiwar group is detailed through minutes, reports, correspondence and Meier's notes. FOR's support of the 1943 March on Washington is discussed. Of particular interest is a report Rustin prepared entitled "22 Days on a Chain Gang" concerning the sentence he served in North Carolina for sitting in a non-Jim Crow section of a bus, the Fellowship of Reconcilation precursor of the 1961-1962 Freedom Rides. The subseries also includes articles Rustin authored and abundant newsclippings. The activities of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, of which Rustin served as executive director, are documented by news releases written by Rustin, and printed material.

Geographic Localities

The subseries States, 1943-1998, (bulk 1956-1966) (5 lin. ft.) contains materials gathered and created by Meier and Rudwick documenting the civil rights struggles in a number of cities and states. Included are notes, interviews, correspondence, newsclippings and other printed material, including published research reports. The states for which the greatest amount of material is represented are Alabama, Georgia, Illinois (particularly Chicago), Kentucky (Louisville), Maryland (especially Baltimore), Mississippi, New Jersey (Newark), North and South Carolina, Tennessee (Memphis and Nashville) and Virginia (Danville and Lynchburg). An extensive file relating to Chicago includes notes and printed material about the Coordinating Council of Community Organizations (CCCO), and research reports prepared by the Chicago Urban League. Significant material represents Mississippi including files about the Mississippi Freedom Democractic Party, the Delta Ministry based in Edwards, notes Meier took on a July 1964 trip to that state and photographs taken in 1947 of Farish Street, in Jackson, Mississippi, the principal black business thoroughfare. Of interest are Meier's correspondence, notes and related material pertaining to the Civic Interest Group's support in Cambridge, Maryland, and the Interracial Council of Newark and the Essex County Intergroup Council (both of New Jersey).

Meier's involvement in the civil rights movement in Baltimore during his teaching career at Morgan State College in that city is revealed in the files about Baltimore, 1959-1998, (1959-1963 bulk). The protesting students at Morgan named Meier adult advisor of the Civic Interest Group (CIG), and files of this organization detail Meier's arrest for demonstrating against a segregated restaurant and include minutes of meetings, notes by Meier written as events unfolded, interviews he conducted, correspondence outlining his participation in the Northwood Theatre demonstration, printed material, and a manuscript written by John Fanton concerning CIG activities in communities on the eastern shore of Cheaspeake Bay (1962). Meier's participation in the Northwood Theatre demonstration, which led to the desegration of this theater, is documented by correspondence, his notes, reports by arrested students, Meier's correspondence with the American Association of University Professors concerning his actions, and photographs.

Research Files for Publications

The RESEARCH FILES FOR PUBLICATION series (23.8 lin. ft.) encompass notes, drafts, reference material, printed material, correspondence and data for only thirteen of Meier's numerous books and articles. Meier and Rudwick retained sample research files in order to provide insight into the ways they did their research and writing, therefore only certain files were kept. For example, most of the data gathered about streetcar boycotts were discarded. Similar material for Meier's other publications was not retained. This large series has been arranged chronologically by publication date of Meier's work.

"A Study of the Racial Ancestry of the Mississippi College Negro"

"A Study of the Racial Ancestry of the Mississippi College Negro," 1947-1949 (1.2 lin. ft.) is Meier's first published article, appearing in 1949. The research for this study, which employed sociological methods, was conducted while Meier was teaching at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi. The bulk of the material consists of questionnaires Meier distributed to students and provides information as to the college the student attended, whether the individual was a student or faculty member, age, county and state of birth, residence at time of completing questionnaire and genealogical background. The collection also includes the manuscript, research correspondence and a letter to Melville Herskovits thanking him for his assistance in getting the article published.

Congress of Racial Equality: A Study in the Civil Rights Movement, 1942-1968

The subseries Congress of Racial Equality: A Study in the Civil Rights Movement, 1942-1968, 1942-1992, 1942-1968 (bulk) (3 lin. ft.), co-authored with Elliott Rudwick, was published in 1973. The material documents issues of voter registration, desegration of lunch counters, restaurants, theaters and interstate travel, and consists of notes Meier took based on CORE's records, photocopies of correspondence and memoranda, as well as newsclipings of CORE activities. There are copies of national and local newsletters, flyers, press releases, memoranda from national director James Farmer and files of one of CORE's offshoots -- the Scholarship, Education and Defense Fund for Racial Equality. Meier also saved printed matter from other organizations to serve as reference material for this time period. These organizations include SNCC, NAACP, COFO, the National Conference on Religion and Race, the Northern Student Movement, and the Southern Conference Educational Fund. This portion of the subseries is arranged chronologically.

Most of the civil rights issues with which CORE became involved as represented by this collection took place in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina and Missisippi. The material for the latter state is particularly extensive and includes information regarding CORE's involvement in Clarkesdale and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Researchers interested in the civil rights movement in this state are advised to also consult the Civil Rights Movement Research Files - States.

The "Rachlin File" includes legal documents for court cases in which Carl Rachlin, national CORE's legal counsel, or other lawyers were involved. Examples of the types of court cases included are CORE's protests against segregated interstate bus travel, segregated lunch counters and a recreation center, as well as voting rights in Mississippi. Meier has indicated that most of the original notes upon which this book was based, taken by Rudwick from local white newspapers, were unfortunately destroyed prior to being donated to the Schomburg Center. Drafts of manscripts form part of this subseries.

The CORE White House Files consist of photocopies of correspondence between CORE and the White House, 1963-1968, housed in the Lyndon B. Johnson Library, which documents the administration's stance towards civil rights.

Along the Color Line: Explorations in the Black Experience - Research Material

The subseries Along the Color Line: Explorations in the Black Experience consists of material Meier and co-author Rudwick gathered for their research for two chapters for this book: "Origins of Nonviolent Direct Action" and the "Don't Buy Where You Can't Work Campaign." Drafts of manuscripts form part of this series. The files for "The Origins of Nonviolent Direct Action," 1967-1975 (1.4 lin. ft.) consists of notes, photocopies of newsclippings, research correspondence, and research papers written by others. There are also some interviews with local and national activists involved in the various boycotts organized in American cities as a means of ending segregation in employment and schools, gathered by Meier and Rudwick in the course of their research. The material deals primarily with streetcar and bus boycotts, as well as school boycotts across the country during the first half of this century. The "Don't Buy Where You Can't Work Campaign" was a form of nonviolent protest to force stores to hire African Americans with the threat of boycotting. The material for this research, 1970's (.6 lin. ft.) contains notes and articles referring to this form of protest during the 1930's and 1960's in various parts of the country including Baltimore, Indianapolis and North Carolina. Meier and Rudwick did not retain all of their research materials and notes for streetcar boycotts research due to insufficient storage space. The roles of the NAACP and CORE in these boycotts are supported with articles, notes and interviews.

Black Detroit and the Rise of the UAW

Files for the subseries Black Detroit and the Rise of the UAW, 1976-1981 (4.6. lin. ft.) contain research information used by Meier and Rudwick in their 1970 book concerning fair labor practices within the UAW that resulted in major gains for African Americans, both inside and outside the automotive manufacturing plants. For their research efforts for this book, Meier and Rudwick were acknowledged with the Philip Taft Labor History Award for 1979. The bulk of the reference material consists of photocopies of files from the late 1930's-1940's gleaned from other archival repositories, notes, a dissertation and other papers. Many files discuss the roles of the Fair Employment Practice Committee and its Office of Production Management and War Manpower Commission. Other organizations represented are the Metropolitan Detroit Fair Employment Practice Council, the War Policy Division of the United Auto Workers-Congress of Industrial Organizations, the Ford Motor Company, and the UAW. During 1976-1978 Meier and Rudwick conducted a number of interviews with individuals involved in the integration of the UAW in the 1940's, such as Clarence Johnson, Louis Martin, Oscar Noble, Horace Sheffield and Roy Wilkins. There are research files for several automobile plant strikes (including hate strikes), particularly those at Ford Motor Company, Chrysler Corporation, and Packard Motor Car Company. The influence of the Communist Party and the Ku Klux Klan is also discussed, as is the lack of employment of African-American women. This subseries includes numerous reference articles about African Americans in the automobile industry by such researchers as Lloyd Bailer, Ralph Bunche, Glen E. Carlson, and Paul Herbert Norgren. Background material is provided in copies of Michigan newspapers and Meier's notes for the period 1919-1943. Finally, the collection concludes with Meier and Rudwick's research correspondence, correspondence with the publisher, book reviews and the Taft Award both authors received.

"Communist Unions and the Black Community: The Case of the Transport Workers Union, 1934-1944"

Meier and Rudwick also co-authored the article, "Communist Unions and the Black Community: The Case of the Transport Workers Union, 1934-1944" (1982), 1979-1981 (1 lin. ft.) which primarily discusses the Transit Workers Union and its operations in New York City and Philadelphia. This subseries is notable in part because it demonstrates the thoroughness of Meier and Rudwick's research program, and consists of several later drafts, and research material including photocopies of minutes and reports of TWU conventions, newsclippings, reference articles, notes, and copies of office files housed at other archival repositories. Michael Quill's involvement in New York City, and the Philadelphia Transport Union strike of 1944 are documented with reference material and notes. Correspondence regarding publication of the article and a report complete this subseries.

Black History and the Historical Profession, 1915-1980 - Research Material

This subseries contains a substantial amount of material prepared by Meier and Rudwick for their 1986 book Black History and the Historical Profession, 1967-1998, (10 lin. ft.), a study dealing with the shaping of scholarly writing on African-American history. Among other issues, Meier and Rudwick were interested in the backgrounds of people who entered the field, the perspectives they brought to the field, how these have changed during the time period covered in the book (ca. 1915-1980), and how they are related to the changing social and academic milieu. The authors also delved into the role philanthropy played in the development of African-African history as a distinct historical speciality. Finally, they studied the ways in which black history and black historians have been treated by the learned historical societies (the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association), and how this in turn related to the development and shaping of the field.

The categories used to organize the research material are: individuals, organizations, subjects and preparation of the book. There are files for each historian included in the book as well as a number who are not. Meier and Rudwick held telephone or in-person interviews with approximately 175 historians, both black and white, who conducted research in black history. An asterisk by the name denotes that there are notes and/or a summary of the interview with that individual and that the file is closed until 2025. The interviewees spoke about how and why they became involved in the study of black history, their family and personal backgrounds, their involvement, if any, in student activism, and their profesional relationship with other academicians in the field. A relatively high percentage of these historians are Jewish -- these interviews discuss the ways in which their Jewish background influenced them professionally. Other material in these folders includes photocopies of selected journal articles (or occasionally original reprints), portions of books authored by these scholars, curriculum vita, correspondence, book reviews or other articles written about the scholar and other biographical material.

The section on Organizations contains photocopies of material found in archival repositories, notes, and newsclippings which illuminate research in black studies. Among the organizations included are the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, the General Education Board, and the Mississippi Valley Historical Association. The Subjects portions of this subseries consist of secondary source materials and contains categories such as historians and African Americans, slavery, reconstruction, historiography, black Ph.D.'s and early black history courses. The final section, Preparation of Book, consists of manuscript drafts, reviews of the manuscript including comments by John Bracey, research correspondence, correspondence with the publisher, and a paper Meier and Rudwick delivered based on the research for this book.

Black Leaders of the Nineteeth Century

The final subseries consists of files for Black Leaders of the Nineteenth Century, 1982-1987 (.8 lin. ft.) co-edited by Leon Litwack and Meier published in 1988. The files contain essays written by a number of scholars and correspondence between the contributors and Meier and Litwack concerning acceptability of the essay or editorial changes to be made. A version of the chapter (sometimes annotated) is generally included. There is also correspondence between Meier, Litwack and the University of Illinois Press, publishers' announcements, and dust jackets. Included is a file for Bettye Collier-Thomas, although her contribution was not used in the book.

Research Files - Unpublished Material

The series RESEARCH FILES - UNPUBLISHED MATERIAL consists of material for two of Meier's unfinished projects, the "History of the Negro Upper Class, circa 1890-1950" and a history of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Although he originally planned to write a history of the NAACP, he decided later to focus on the labor issue only.

The "Negro Upper Class Study," 1958-1960 (1.6 lin. ft.) subseries was slated to be a follow-up study to his earlier publication, "History of the Negro Upper Class in Atlanta, Georgia, 1890-1958." There are notes, newsclippings, articles and research correspondence. The cities covered include New Orleans, Baltimore, Durham (North Carolina), Charleston (South Carolina), Philadelphia, Nashville, and Washington, D.C.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People - National Office

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People - National Office, 1960-1993, subseries (2.6 lin. ft.) consists principally of photocopies of original NAACP records dating from 1909 to 1965 (originals are housed in the Library of Congress), and Meier's research notes. The NAACP files focus on disenfranchisement in the South and inequalities in educational opportunities. The Voting Franchise files consist of individual legal cases that the NAACP fought to secure voting rights in the American South, 1911-1945. The Legal Redress cases deal with the NAACP's attempts to have the courts overturn decisions in cases following conviction, 1910-1939. The Education files are concerned with federal, state and local aid to education, 1909-1938.

The files for the Garland Fund, funded by a gift from Charles Garland in 1922, pertain to a nationwide legal campaign designed to procure and safeguard full civil rights for all African Americans. The campaign focused on the "Disenfranchisement of African Americans in southern states, inequalities in educational opportunities and appropriations, denial of equal service on railroads, bus systems and other forms of transportation, and other forms of discrimination based upon color and violating constitutional provisions." Nathan R. Margold was the legal counsel who directed this campaign in the 1930's.

The School Desegregation files, 1919-1940, contain information on segregation in public schools and universities across the country, and the inequity in black and white teachers' salaries.

Also included are Meier's notes on the involvement of the NAACP in student sit-ins; research correspondence for his article, "Attorneys Black and White: a Study of Race Relations in the NAACP" (1976); photocopies of monthly reports of various departments (1943-1946); publications of Herbert Hill, NAACP Labor Director; and papers written by Meier with various co-authors on civil rights organizations, the student non-violent movement, and race relations.

Elliott Rudwick

This extensive collection concludes with the ELLIOTT RUDWICK series, 1960-1983 (2 lin. ft.) which contains a modest amount of material reflecting Rudwick's and Meier's joint projects. Included are Rudwick's vita and bibliographies, papers presented about black Detroit, the Congress for Racial Equality, and black nationalism, his consultancy with the United States Commission on Civil Rights, 1962-1963, and a partial manuscript about the history of blacks in East St. Louis, IL. There is also reference material about the Illinois State Conference of NAACP branches, labor, 1960's, and student papers about blacks in Ohio. The series concludes with Rudwick's reprints.
