NELSON, STANLEY MARTIN INVITED TO NFL MINICAMPS

Trio become the latest Hornets to live out NFL dream

NOTE: This story will continue to be updated throughout the week.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
Former Sacramento State cornerback Caleb Nelson, tight end Marshel Martin IV and defensive tackle Jett Stanley have accepted NFL minicamp invitations, it was announced today. Nelson will attend minicamp with the Philadelphia Eagles, Martin will head to the New York Jets and Stanley will participate with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Nelson appeared in 24 games, starting 23, in his two years with the Hornets. He was named second team all-Big Sky in 2022 after leading the team with 12 pas breakups. He started the year in memorable fashion with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown against Utah Tech. Last season, Nelson recorded 27 total tackles and had nine pass breakups. His diving interception in the end zone against Stanford played a large role in the team's win over the Cardinal.

Martin earned all-Big Sky honors each of his four seasons played with the Hornets and was named an FCS All-American in 2021 and 2022. He was a second team selection as a freshman in 2019 and followed with three first team honors in 2021, 2022 and 2023 — becoming just the fourth player in school history to do so. He left Sacramento State ranked second in school history with 27 career receiving touchdowns, fourth in with 192 career receptions and fifth with 2,373 career receiving yards. All of those numbers destroyed the previous records by a tight end in program history. He finished his career by having at least one reception in 48 of 49 career games played.

Stanley was named second team all-Big Sky the last two seasons. He started all 13 games over those seasons and finished his career with 112 total tackles, including 5.5 for loss. As a senior, he led the Hornet defensive line with 40 total tackles and tied for the team lead with 4.5 sacks. He earned Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week award after being credited with five total tackles, including three sacks in the win at Stanford

The trio become the 66th, 67th and 68th Sacramento State players to earn an opportunity with an NFL team. Last season, four former Hornets played in NFL regular season games comprised of wide receiver DeAndre Carter (Las Vegas Raiders), safety Marte Mapu (New England Patriots), cornerback Daron Bland (Dallas Cowboys) and running back Elijah Dotson (Los Angeles Chargers).
