ELP's Amazing Live Box Set!
Emerson, Lake & Palmer's "Out of This World: Live 1970-1997" 7-CD boxed set was finally delivered today, May 23rd, 2022. It took a long time to get to me from Great Britain, but it was surely worth the wait. ELP was and continues to be among my favorite progressive rock bands. This box includes 5 complete historic shows including their 2nd ever live appearance at the Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970. Altogether, there are over 6 hours of live ELP performances over an almost 30-year span. Also, know that these shows are NOT bootleg tapes from the audience, but professionally recorded and fully mixed and produced performances. I am so glad I added this box set to my ELP collection!

I finally got a copy of Out of This World. What a great and appropriate title. I had heard their Isle of Wight show and it sounded kind of raw to me. The CD of the Isle show in this set is worlds apart from what I had heard- sounds great. These shows are remastered to perfection. The dynamics of ELP sounds front and center inn this set. I saw ELP a few times. Emerson is probably the only musician who could be up there with Zappa and really no surprise that the Nice recorded Lumpy Gravy. Greg Lake is one of the greatest voices ever and Palmer is superb- no other like him. Palmer's solo stuff is fabulous. I reviewed the Keith Emerson tribute show-it's tremendous. Anyway, back to Out of This World- it really is so! ELP made an immediate impact on prog and rock and there impact shines brightly on this set. Get us some more live ELP!

I've loved ELP since the late 80's and have just about everything they've ever put out...other than some of the compilation albums of which there are a few dozen. Anyway, I was exciting when I saw this was coming out, but I was reluctant to buy it because i pretty much had the majority of these shows elsewhere, other than the 1997 show.
First off is the Isle of Wight which still has the short 4-minute version of Rondo. I've seen a video of this on YouTube that is the FULL 10-minute version. So, it's kind of annoying that I now have two copies of this show and neither of them is complete. The show itself is outstanding though and I love it.
Second is the Cal Jam from 1974. Damn good show, but it's just the audio from the original TV broadcast. So we get the short version of Toccata (3 minutes or so). We only get excerpts from Take A Pebble, plus a shortened version of the Piano Improv to boot. Karn Evil 9 has some of the lyrics cut and the Second Impression was apparently AWOL. This does have a small portion of The Great Gates of Kiev, but I guess having a small piece of something is better than nothing.
Third is the Works Live concert from 1977. This is the best of all the concerts here, but I already have the original release of this. All they did for this release was move Abaddon's Bolero to the end of Disc One.
Fourth, is the Royal Albert Hall Show from Oct. 1992. This is just a short version of the original release from 1993. I have a bootleg version of this show in the Original Bootleg Series boxes.
Fifth, is the 1997 concert from Phoenix. Pretty good show, but I a few of these recordings are also on the Then & Now CD set.
So this set is overall and for the stuff I didn't have it was worth it. I'm just a little irked that this box set would have the perfect opportunity to release all of these shows in full. But no dice.
I'm a hardcore fan so i would have bought this regardless, I just wish it would have been more complete.

Even though I had a fair amount of these live tracks from years past it was nice to get them all in one place with the additional California Jam and Phoenix shows. The remastered sound is noticeable and it is a well put together box set. The booklet and liner notes are nothing special but the overall packaging is well done. Long live Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and the brilliant music ELP has given us!
