Ryan Gilbey New Statesman Guadagnino claims that his Suspiria is not a remake at all but a cover version. If that's the case, it can only be the equivalent of turning a three-minute glam stomp into a bloated rock opera. Rated: 2/5 Nov 19, 2018 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com '...the punch-line of Argento’s film becomes the jumping off point for Guadagnino, but nearly two and a half hours later, not much of any value has been added to the pot…quite horrible to watch, and presumably that’s the intention…’ Rated: 2/5 Apr 25, 2024 Full Review Paul Farrell Vague Visages A swirling, tumbling vision of Cold War paranoia and coven politics, Suspiria will both astound and baffle; the conflict that defines its muted streets, full of uneasy dreams and restless feet, will come to bear on its audience and their nightmares. Dave S It’s always hard to resist the temptation to compare a remake to the original movie and Suspiria, based on the stark differences between the two, is no exception. Dario Argento’s 1977 original was a claustrophobic, nightmare of a horror film that was severely hampered by bad acting, horrible dialogue, and really cheesy effects. Luca Guadagnino’s remake managed to cleanup its predecessor’s shortcomings but tends to be an overlong and rambling mess thanks to irrelevant secondary storylines and far too many dance scenes. While Guadagnino’s movie is clearly the more technically proficient of the two, it doesn’t come anywhere close to creating the suspense, dread, and horror of the original. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/17/24 Full Review Zoe G Aesthetically it was a very pretty movie and the physical horror was great. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/04/24 Full Review DCUT 7 What an awful, awful film. Too long, too boring, and when it finally decided to go off the rails in the third act, the special effects were laughably bad. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review jeroen v Confusing, too long, lack of story, tries hard to be "arty", didn't really like it but wasn't that bad to put it off. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/08/24 Full Review Greg T Possibly the worst remake ever (except maybe for Psycho?). Why would anyone bother to remake one of the best horror movies ever made. I tried to watch this but turned it off after a while, just terrible... Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/24 Full Review Raeesa K The atmosphere of this movie manages to be gritty and brooding but very in your face and unfiltered at the same time. The sets, costumes, lighting - all stay close to the original but the changes and twists to the plot are well executed and much welcome.
