Achieving a great night's sleep starts with a great mattress, but it can be difficult to choose the right one. Not only do you want it to feel comfortable, but you also want a mattress that's supportive, long-lasting and fits within your budget. At Good Housekeeping Institute, we test all kinds of mattresses to help you determine which ones are worth it, including mattresses available online, hybrid beds and cooling mattresses.

As part of our mattress testing, we put Puffy's Lux Mattress through extensive evaluations, and it has proved to be a favorite of both our testers and survey panelists. Our pick for the best soft mattress, the Puffy Lux bed has received high scores for feeling plush yet supportive and for keeping its shape over time. Plus, users swear that the mattress really does improve their quality of sleep.

Puffy has been in operation since 2016 and is known for its luxurious mattresses with a cloud-like feel. When Puffy introduced the Lux Mattress model, it quickly became the brand's best-seller. For this article, we worked with representatives at Puffy to learn more about the brand and the Puffy Lux Mattress. We also referenced our mattress testing data and surveyed our panel of product testers who own Puffy mattresses. Altogether, they provided us with more than 1,000 data points of real-user feedback, covering everything from the ordering and delivery process to overall comfort, temperature regulation, longevity and more.

Is the Puffy Lux Mattress right for me?

We think the Puffy Lux Mattress is an especially great option for you if you're a(n):

Side sleeper

The Puffy Lux Mattress is recommended as a mattress for side sleepers because the plush bed can help to alleviate pressure around the shoulders, hips and knees and allow for neutral spinal alignment. Our survey panelists who identify as side sleepers gave this mattress perfect scores across the board for being comfortable to sleep on and loved it from night one.

Pain sufferer

One of the most common highlights in our data is that users experience less pain when sleeping on the Puffy Lux Mattress, especially when compared to their old innerspring beds. This hybrid model combines metal coils with pressure-relieving foam for both comfort and support. One panelist shared, "I don’t wake with any soreness with the Puffy," and a tester noted a "tremendous" improvement in her morning aches and pains.

Online shopper

Users tell us they love how convenient the Puffy shopping experience is. With the click of a button, you're able to order the Puffy Lux Mattress online without having to visit a mattress showroom. Then, the mattress is compressed in a box and shipped to your doorstep in just a few days for DIY setup.

Feel

The Puffy Lux Mattress is a medium plush mattress that testers describe as "luxurious" and "soft but supportive." Puffy claims the mattress is compatible with all sleeping positions, but because the mattress has a plush feel, we think it's best for side sleepers who need a mattress that sinks in around common pressure points like the shoulders and hips. Lighter-weight back sleepers may also find relief on the Puffy Lux Mattress, but heavier back sleepers and stomach sleepers could use a firmer sleeping surface to achieve proper spinal alignment.

Edge support

Compared to other mattress models we've tested, the Puffy Lux Mattress has average edge support. The hybrid bed is not quite as sturdy around the perimeter as an innerspring mattress, but it's more structured than most memory foam mattresses. Users told us that earlier models of the mattress were more prone to sagging at the edges, which made getting in and out of bed a bit difficult, but with updates, the newer version is more supportive.

Motion transfer

The Puffy Lux Mattress is made with layers of foam and individually pocketed metal coils for better motion isolation, which means you're less likely to feel movement when sleeping next to a partner who tosses and turns all night long or a pet that won't lie still. Our panelists who share their beds with a partner say they sleep soundly throughout the night on this mattress and are able to achieve deep, restful sleep.

Temperature

Puffy claims that the Lux Mattress is made with a layer of cooling foam to move heat away from the body, but some testers found themselves overheating at night while sleeping on the mattress. Still, the metal coils allow for better airflow than a solid foam mattress, and there are some Puffy Lux Mattress users who share that they're able to maintain a comfortable temperature all night long, with one describing the bed as "cool."

Off-gassing

Like most beds-in-a-box that use memory foam materials, there's some off-gassing to be expected with the Puffy Lux Mattress, but it is CertiPUR-US certified, which means the foam in the mattress is made without certain harmful chemicals, and the bed has been tested to ensure low VOC emissions. Only one user from our group of testers and survey panelists reported that there was a strong odor upon opening the mattress that took longer than expected to fully dissipate.

Puffy Lux Mattress materials

Puffy uses a combination of metal coils and foam for the Lux Mattress, which has a medium plush feel and a 12-inch profile. Here's a breakdown of the materials used starting from the top:

  1. Cover: The top of the mattress is covered in a smooth material that the brand claims is stain-resistant, and it zips off for easy cleaning.
  2. Gel-infused foam: Next is a 1.5-inch layer of gel-infused foam that Puffy says is meant to disperse heat away from your body while you sleep to provide cooling cushioning.
  3. Pressure-relieving foam: Underneath, there are 1.5 inches of pressure-relieving foam that contour to your body for cradling comfort.
  4. Moisture-wicking foam: A 2-inch layer of foam that Puffy describes as "humidity-resistant" comes next. It's designed to wick away moisture and promote better airflow so you don't feel stuffy at night.
  5. Coils and high-density foam: The bottom layer of the mattress is the most substantial, consisting of 7 inches of individually pocketed metal coils and a high-density foam rail for support and stability.
  6. Gripped bottom: Lastly, a gripped cover encases the bottom of the mattress to prevent it from shifting around on your bed frame while you sleep.

Where can I buy the Puffy Lux Mattress?

There are two options when shopping for a Puffy Lux Mattress. Puffy's mattresses are available to purchase online on the brand's website and in select showroom locations across the U.S. If you order your mattress online, the brand offers a 101-day sleep trial, but this perk isn't extended to in-store purchases.

Delivery and setup

When you order the Puffy Lux Mattress online, here's what you can expect:

Delivery

The mattress is compressed into a box and delivered straight to your doorstep for free. The brand says it typically takes two to five days for the mattress to arrive after ordering. There's no white glove service, so you're responsible for moving the new mattress and removing your old one. Our testers and survey panelists gave the delivery process near-perfect scores for being quick and easy.

Setup

Move the mattress box to your bedroom, and unroll the mattress onto a flat surface. Puffy recommends giving the bed at least two hours to fully decompress before lying on it. Testers were impressed with just how quickly the mattress took shape once unwrapped, giving it high ratings for being comfy to sleep on from night one. They also noted that it's best to have a second set of hands to help carry the mattress and lift it onto your bed frame or platform.

FAQs

Can you return the Puffy Lux Mattress?

Yes — if you purchase your mattress through Puffy's website, you're able to return your mattress free of charge. If you decide to return the mattress, you can start the process by contacting Puffy's customer support team who will coordinate pickup, donate the mattress to charity and initiate a full refund.

You have up to 101 days to try out the mattress before committing to it, and it's important to note that you must keep the mattress for a minimum of 14 days before Puffy will accept a return.

How long does a Puffy Lux Mattress last?

Puffy says the typical lifespan of its hybrid mattresses is 7 to 10 years with proper care. Our survey panelists who have had their Puffy beds for years say that they hold their shape well without any noticeable indentations, but because the company launched in 2016, we don't have longer-term data to support the brand's claims.

Puffy offers a lifetime warranty for its mattresses, meaning the brand will repair or replace your defective mattress if the defects meet the warranty's conditions.

Should you flip the Puffy Lux Mattress?

We and the brand do not recommend flipping the Puffy Lux Mattress. The bed features a layered design with supportive materials on the bottom and plush, conforming materials on top that shouldn't be turned over. The brand shares that you can rotate the mattress but adds that it's not necessary.

Consider adding a mattress protector if you're worried about damage or wear and tear, and if you don't love the feel of your bed over time, you can always add a mattress topper for a more comfortable sleeping surface.
