Notes
A Tribute to Jack Johnson is a studio album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released February 24, 1971 on Columbia Records. It also serves as the soundtrack for a documentary by Bill Cayton about the heavyweight world champion boxer Jack Johnson.
The first major recording session for the album, which took place on April 7, 1970, was almost accidental: John McLaughlin, awaiting Miles's arrival, began improvising riffs on his guitar, and was shortly joined by Michael Henderson and Billy Cobham. Meanwhile, the producers brought in Herbie Hancock, who had been passing through the building on unrelated business, to play the Farfisa organ. Miles arrived at last and began his solo at about 2:19 on the first track.
The album's two long tracks were assembled in the editing room by producer Teo Macero. "Right Off" is constructed from several takes and a solo by Davis recorded in November 1969. It contains a riff from Sly and the Family Stone's "Sing a Simple Song". Much of the track "Yesternow" is built around a slightly modified version of the bassline from the James Brown song "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud"; this may be a deliberate allusion to the song's Black Power theme as it relates to the film's subject. "Yesternow" also incorporates a brief excerpt of "Shhh/Peaceful" from Davis's 1969 album In a Silent Way and a 10-minute section comprising several takes of the tune "Willie Nelson" from a session on 18 February 1970.

- Sounds absolutely great, flat and quiet vinyl. Has a price sticker of 14 April 1978 for 22DM, presume this is later 70's repress.
- Absolutely fantastic pressing! Audio is clear and well balanced to my ears. And what a musical masterpiece.
- Ok, so another triumph for the Miles catalog by MoFi - I was surprised by the things I heard on side 2 of this record, more depth revealed
Played on a Dual 1219 with Stanton 680 cart with fineline stylus, into tube phono stage, Yamaha A-S701 amp and Klipsch KG 5.2 speakers - Great release! I used to have only the MOV version of this album. Since I have almost all the other Miles Mofi reissues and love them all, I was determined to find this one too. In the beginning, I thought I like the MOV a bit more, particularly for the highs in the drums. Then, I played both loud and the Mofi was significantly better. It was denser (like a more complex texture) and much more controlled in the highs and lows. The MOV was a bit tiring towards the end, while the Mofi was delightful from start to finish. They both had a comparable soundstage but the imaging was just better in the Mofi. The cover of the Mofi is really gorgeous. I love the design on the inside. Regarding the pressing, both records were great but the MOV was just a bit better. I have the impression that while the Record Industry is just a good pressing plant when it comes to other reissue labels, it becomes one of the best when they press their own records (MOV reissues). I hear only 2 noticeable but not distracting ticks on side A and some crackle here and there in the Mofi version; and a virtually perfect pressing in the MOV. Overall, $40 for the Mofi is an incredible deal for such a great release, but if you have the MOV and you just want a good-sounding version, then you might not need the Mofi
- Side one - noisy in quieter parts ! About 20 clicks...has been washed in ultrasonic. Arrived dirty. Unbelievable !
