Here Are All 22 People Who Have Died in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ So Far

It’s hard to keep track, okay?!

preview for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 - Trailer (Hulu)

If you’ve been watching The Handmaid’s Tale since it began in 2017, then you’re VERY aware of how willing they are to kill off characters you know and love. Seriously, it’s pretty much like Game of Thrones up in here. And at this point, it’s hard to keep track of everyone who has passed. The show has been going on for more than five years (!!!), and that’s meant five years of trying to remember who has (and has not) survived the horrifying Gilead regime.

In case you forgot, season 4 left off on the MAJOR death of Fred Waterford (praise be), but he wasn’t the only one to lose his life that season. And with season 5 upon us—and tensions rising in both Gilead and Canada—I can only imagine how many more people are going to be killed off soon.

So just in case you’d rather not have to keep a running list of every Handmaid’s Tale death in your head, here’s one written out for you. Be warned: It may pull at your heartstrings as you remember all the lovable characters we’ve lost over the years. But it’ll be quickly balanced out by the joy of all the terrible Gileadians who are finally gone. Without further ado, here are all 22 characters who have died on The Handmaid’s Tale…so far.

1

Fred Waterford (Played by Joseph Fiennes)

After four seasons of being pretty much the worst person alive, Fred Waterford finally died, coming better late than never. Being chased down, torn apart, and strung up by a pack of vengeful ex-Handmaids was one hell of a way to go.

2

Alma (Played by Nina Kiri)

Poor Alma met her end in season 4 while escaping with June and some other Handmaids. As they were being transported to a breeding colony (ugh), the Handmaids were able to sneak out of the truck at a railroad crossing. Unfortunately for Alma, she didn’t make it across the tracks in time and got hit by an oncoming train.

3

Brianna (Played by Bahia Watson)

Brianna was one of the other Handmaids who was being transported to the breeding colony (again, ugh). She was running right beside Alma across the train tracks and was sadly also hit and killed by the train.

Beth (Played by Kristen Gutoskie)

Beth met a tragic end when her life was used as a threat to get June to tell Gilead where her fellow Handmaids were hiding in season 4. When Beth told June not to reveal anything, Beth was shoved off a roof by a lieutenant.

5

Sienna (Played by Sugenja Sri)

Sienna was pushed off the roof almost immediately after Beth, and her death was particularly heartbreaking because you saw just how absolutely terrified she was right before being murdered.

6

Frances (Played by Ordena Stephens-Thompson)

Frances was the Martha in Hannah’s house, and after being seen by Natalie (aka Ofmatthew) sneaking June some information about the guard at the gate of Hannah’s school, Natalie snitched on her and Frances was executed.

Natalie (Played by Ashleigh LaThrop)

Snitches get…well, in this case, bullied by other Handmaids to the point of a total mental breakdown at the grocery store that turned violent and got them shot in the shoulder by a guard. Natalie (who was pregnant at the time) was left braindead and in a hospital after the shooting, and she was kept on life support until a C-section was performed before she passed.

8

Eden (Played by Sydney Sweeney)

If there were an award for the most rip-your-heart-out tragic death on the show, it’d probably be sweet, naive Eden’s. She was willing to die by drowning in a swimming pool rather than give up her first love. Just one of many reasons Gilead should, um, stop marrying off teenagers?

9

Isaac (Played by Rohan Mead)

Eden’s love Isaac, a former Guardian, died right along with her in the high school swimming pool. Sad!

Johnny Pogue (Played by David Thompson)

Esther Keyes finally got her revenge on Johnny Pogue after he raped her countless times. June, Esther, and the other Handmaids hiding out at the Keyes’s farm held a mock Gilead-style trial for Johnny, where he was found guilty. As punishment, Esther stabbed him to death.

11

Mr. Whitford (Played by Tim Ransom)

Mr. Whitford died back in season 1 as he was helping June, Luke, and Hannah escape from Gilead. While he was out trying to get Canadian passports for them, he was caught by Guardians and hanged from a street lamp.

12

Dan (Played by John Carroll Lynch)

Emily’s old colleague was seen only in flashbacks during season 2, but his death was an impactful one. Shortly after Emily learned she wouldn’t be teaching the following semester because of concerns that she wasn’t “maintaining a healthy teaching environment” (aka she’s a lesbian), she found Dan, who’s gay, hanging from the rafters at the university with a homophobic slur spray-painted below.

13

Eleanor Lawrence (Played by Julie Dretzin)

Eleanor Lawrence never had an easy time in Gilead, but having to watch June and her husband perform the Ceremony (after they were forced by Aunt Lydia and the Waterfords), she really seemed to go over the edge. June found Eleanor in her room overdosed on medication, and rather than call for help, June let her go.

14

Commander Roy (Played by Lawrence Cotton)

We saw Commander Roy for only one episode, but his death was still satisfying. After Emily was posted to his house as a Handmaid, they performed the Ceremony and he promptly had a heart attack. While his wife was running to call for help, Emily got up and kicked him in the crotch. Blessed be the fruit.

15

Martha 6715-301 (Played by Laura Wilson)

Although she had no official name, Martha 6715-301 was Emily’s girlfriend who was hanged for “gender treachery” as Emily was forced to watch.

Kit was one of the unlucky many who were sent to the Colonies to work until they died. But just before she went, she had one moment of happiness when Janine organized a wedding between Kit and her partner Fiona.

17

Odette (Played by Rebecca Rittenhouse)

Odette was another character seen only in flashbacks, so in case you forgot, she was Moira’s fiancée pre-Gilead. She was rounded up in one of the so-called dyke purges. Later, after Moira escaped to Canada, she was able to confirm that Odette was killed.

18

Lillie Fuller, Aka Ofglen (Played by Tattiawna Jones)

During season 2, Lillie strapped a bomb to herself and blew up the new Rachel and Leah Center, taking out 26 Commanders and 31 Handmaids.

After helping make Gilead the most horrible place imaginable, Commander Pryce was one of the people killed in the bombing at the Rachel and Leah Center.

Zoe showed up in only one episode during the first season, when she found and helped an injured Luke. But just as they were boarding a boat to Canada, Zoe was shot by Gilead soldiers.
