From the New York Times bestselling author of Counting by 7s comes a heartfelt story about "the importance of compassion and bravery when facing life’s challenges” (Kirkus) for fans of The One and Only Ivan and Front Desk.

It's been almost a year since Sila's mother traveled halfway around the world to Turkey, hoping to secure the immigration paperwork that would allow her to return to her family in the United States.

The long separation is almost impossible for Sila to withstand. But things change when Sila accompanies her father (who is a mechanic) outside their Oregon town to fix a truck. There, behind an enormous stone wall, she meets a grandfatherly man who only months before won the state lottery. Their new alliance leads to the rescue of a circus elephant named Veda, and then to a friendship with an unusual boy named Mateo, proving that comfort and hope come in the most unlikely of places.

A moving story of family separation and the importance of the connection between animals and humans, this novel has the enormous heart and uplifting humor that readers have come to expect from the beloved author of
Counting by 7s.

“I couldn’t stop reading—I had to find out what would happen. An unusual and lovely real-life fairy tale.”

“A gorgeous and emotional novel. I loved every page.” —Cynthia Kadohata, Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-8-Sila Tekin lives in Oregon's Willamette Valley with her parents, who immigrated from Turkey 14 years ago, but a problem with her mother's paperwork means she has to return to Turkey to sort it out. What was supposed to be an eight-day trip stretches into months, and Sila misses her mother desperately. Two chance meetings provide the only thing big enough to take her mind off missing her mother: an elephant named Veda, purchased by an elderly lottery winner Sila met when her auto mechanic dad helped fix his truck. Gio Gardino-coincidentally, the widower of Sila's beloved second grade teacher-is perfectly positioned to set up an elephant sanctuary, and Sila convinces her dad to let her work there over the summer. Sila includes her autistic school friend Mateo Lopez in her plan, and his mother, a Mexican American lawyer, later proves helpful to the Tekin family. Sila is at the heart of the story, told in close third person, but narration shifts in some sections to focus on Gio and Mateo and even, briefly, Veda. Each character wrestles with love and loss and struggles with decisions about when to act and when to wait; each in their own way has insight into the others, and empathy for them. VERDICT Sila wonders if people are more compassionate because of their own difficult experiences; in this unique, touching book, the answer is yes. ★ "Each character wrestles with love and loss and struggles with decisions about when to act and when to wait; each in their own way has insight into the others, and empathy for them . . . Sila wonders if people are more compassionate because of their own difficult experiences; in this unique, touching book, the answer is yes." —

"Using multiple narrative perspectives, [Goldberg Sloan] touches on many weighty topics (grief, autism, deportation, animal cruelty), handling each with sensitivity." —
Booklist

"Sloan captures the importance of compassion and bravery when facing life’s challenges . . . themes of collectivity and community in the face of isolation and stigma are brought to the surface and themselves offer depth to this heartfelt and sincere story." —
Kirkus

"Sloan (To Night Owl from Dogfish) fully builds the emotional interiors of each character, including Veda. This heartfelt tale thoughtfully conveys the agony of family separation, the beauty of nature, and the power of friendship to overcome tremendous difficulties." —Publishers Weekly

"This beautiful story and the wonderful connections between all of the characters remind readers that very often people and animals come into our lives for a reason and usually just when we need them the most. A perfect title for middle school, fans of animal stories, and a great suggestion for readers looking for books that help deal with loss, heartache, and hope." —School Library Connection

"The friendship of old man, child, and giant pachyderm is convincing, touching, and just odd enough." —

This is the PERFECT book for a young girl age 9 - 15. It has a strong female protagonist that struggles with issues anyone can relate to. Very up-to-date current events, issues every girl should read about and learn from, and the perfect 'read with a friend/parent' book. I absolutely LOVED the book and would recommend it to everyone, young and old!

I have read all of the books by this author and this is definetly one of my favorites. I love that the way in which the characters come together and are able to help each other. The way it unfolds is rich and well thought out. There are many layers among the characters and they all learn about the many ways that one thing affects another and ways that they as individuals can make a difference. In addidtion I love that the ideas of caring for an animal was discussed, taken seriously and planned for the lifespan of the animal.

As an adult who enjoys YA fiction from time to time, this was a complete page turner. Easily read in one day. An excellent way to escape for the better portion of a day. I have read other books by this author and they are equally as entertaining.

Wonderful read, but the audiobook voicing of Gio is annoyingly soft, even when he should be shouting or excited. A true disappointment in an otherwise wonderful reading of an enjoyable and touching story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read. Heartbreaking yet hopeful 💫

This book is so meaningful.
Such books are so important when it comes to animal protection and how to properly take care of them.

I find this middle story so unique and inspirational. I do hope I get to read more of such books. We tend to take animals for granted, misuse them for labour and selfish reasons.

This read made me so emotional when it ended. I was thinking really hard of what we have done knowingly or unknowingly that is harming the lives around us.

This is the story of a girl whose mother has to go to Turkey for a few days to secure her immigration papers. However, days turned to weeks. Weeks turned to months. It was making Sila really worried and she couldn’t focus on anything else. However, her father decides to take her to a place to fix things for an elderly man. There she meets a grandfatherly figure and an unexpected chain of events that leads to the rescue of a circus elephant!

How crazy is that! And yes, it is such an adventure filled reading experience. One moment I was so sorry for the little girl, her clueless father, the old man who’s lost for what to do next with the lottery prize he recently won but you know this is one of those books which give you enough hope and inspiration on what to do next when you are lost in a similar situation.

I love this book so much! So worth it.
