As a first year student, SCAD has impressed me overall. Being able to work towards your real dreams and actively building up a portfolio, and to so easily access big companies is like a dream come true! The classes here are provided with plenty of useful information, but with the right professors. Some of the classes I took were a nightmare because of the professors. One severely lacked in communication while the other only catered to certain students who already mastered the material and treating everyone else like a second thought. And the food has always made me sick to my stomach and I've found bugs in it a couple of times. But the worst of it comes from their disability services. I scheduled a psychiatric appointment for an evaluation, and the psychiatrist went on about these generalized assumptions about people with certain personality disorders. She kept calling them "manipulative" and "dramatic". I felt extremely unsafe and am disappointed in SCAD for hiring such a person.
Savannah College of Art and Design is a great college with fantastic resources to help you further your artistic career. The professors are kind, the other students have wonderful and unique insights, and plenty of school-sponsored activities that allow you to talk to industry professionals and get insight into what it's like to create art for a living. However, the largest drawback to the college itself would be the price. It's a very expensive institution and while this does contribute towards supplies and transportation for students I think it's too much for how much extra things you need to purchase for your classes. As I'm writing this review I'm dealing with the reality that I very well may need to transfer to a different school after my freshman year as I just can't afford it. However, if you're able to manage the price SCAD is a wonderful institution where you'll make incredible connections, learn industry insights, and hopefully gain work experience.
My time at SCAD has been a memorable one. I look back at myself as a freshman on the Hong Kong campus, and I am so grateful for how much I have changed for the better. Being in a sea of creative individuals with little to no judgment allowed me to open up and crawl out of the box I put myself in. Both professors and students have contributed to who I am today.
Despite that my academic and social life was nothing short of great, I feel like I didn't receive support as a graduating international student. Advisers and professors lacked the resources for foreign students to thrive post-grad. There should have been more transparency regarding the chances of getting an H1-B visa along with the time crunch and cost that comes with it.
Career Advisers would advise us to go to International Student Services, whose purpose was for visa documentation only. Both offices would transfer me to the other, which made the job search harder to navigate as I didn't have much guidance.
