The Little Port Cooper School House at 'The Wonderful's' Keirangi, Camp Bay, is our remote farm hut. A very historic building, built in 1883.
Basic tramping & camping hut. Enjoy the remoteness of this incredible hidden spot, the fishing, hiking, diving, relaxation, the safe sandy beach, native bush, sea kayaking and so much more! Start with a 1.5hr tramp over to Little Port Cooper from the Keirangi Homestead, then enjoy a humble historic stay in the Ole School House.

The space
Originally built in 1883 along with a settlement of houses that housed the Signalmen and their family’s. The School House, was just that, a school for the children in this very remote village. It is the only building left from this Historic settlement. Not only is Little Port Cooper a Wonderland of beauty, it is steeped in history. The only way to get to this hidden gem by land is via the Historic Pack Track that runs across the rugged landscape of Keirangi. This Pack Track use to be the only land access for the villagers by foot or by Horse. A breathtaking 1.5 hour hike before you reach your humble historic stay in the School House Hut. If you are looking for luxury accommodation, you will not find it here. This 130 year old building is still very original. Instead you will find your basic back country hut needs. A place to cook and connect and place to lay your head after a day of salty adventures and memory making. If you are looking for Wonder, to find simple pleasures, this historic back country hut in this quiet secluded bay, could be just where you find it.

The Little Port Cooper School House, your original back country, bayside, secluded hiking hut. If you are up for roughing it with just the basics in this historic hut, you will in turn be graced waking up on your own secluded Bay feeling a million miles away. There might not be much, but this place has it all.

Only open for the Summer months Nov - March, as there is no heating in this hut and during the cooler months other little friends tend to make home here.

This hut is not serviced regularly and you may still find evidence of rodent finding shelter here too. This can not be helped in such a remote hut.

Sleeping quarters - 3 double beds with a single bunk on the top, this hut sleeps 9 guests. Pillows are provided, guest are to bring there own warm sleeping bags and pillow cases.

The Kitchenette - a seperate room with a two burner stove top. We stock a basic pantry for your convenience, tea, granulated coffee, sugar, olive oil, salt and pepper. You will need to bring your own ground coffee for the stovetop pot. The Kitchen is equipped with all basic necessities. All you will need is your camping food. There is no refrigeration so when packing your hiking pack with food, think light camping meals.

BBQ - There is also a large BBQ outside the hut for larger groups.

Water - The water here is not safe to drink, we recommend bringing some fresh water and boiling any water from the tap before drinking.

The Outhouse - A compostable long drop with toilet paper and hand sanitiser supplied.

This hut has no power or hot water. There are some small solar powered lights, we recommend bringing a head torch.

Hike to Little Port Cooper - Your stay starts with a spectacular 1.5 hour hike along ‘The Historic Pack Track’ with breathtaking views across Lyttelton Harbour and the rugged volcanic landscapes. No doubt you will feel like taking a dip in the Bay once you get there. If the weather is wet, we grade this hike as ‘difficult’ it can get very slippery. We only allow children from 7 years+.

Sail there - there is a mooring in the Bay at Little Port Cooper if sailing to the hut is more your style rather then hiking.

Fishing, diving, swimming, rock jumping, exploring and so much more!

Feel a million miles away and enjoy the abundance of slow times and connection with this spot and with others.

Guest access
The only way to this hut is to tramp there with your gear on your back (you can travel lightly as we provide all cookers, gas, cook wear, utensils, plates, mugs beds, pillows etc). We will provide you with a code for the hut and direct you for your hike over to Little Port Cooper via the Historic Pack Track. Only access to hut is by foot so PLEASE WEAR APPROPRIATE HIKING FOOTWEAR, as track can get very slippery when wet and turn from an easy/medium track to a hard track. The track is narrow and steep for a lot of it so we do not recommend this hike for children under the age of 7 years. The last 150m down to the bay and hut has no track, it is straight down the hill side, the grass can be long and slippery so it sometimes pays to take your pack off and bum shuffle this part down. We do not provide a gear transport service for this hut. Alternatively, you can access the location by boat/sea kayak.

Other things to note
You will need to boil the water before drinking, it may pay to take some bottled water with you.

Strictly no dogs sorry due to stock on farm.

Cleaning - Please leave the hut as you found it. as the hut is not frequently serviced. All surfaces wiped down, BBQ and Cookers cleaned, sweep the floors, take all rubbish back with you and lock when you leave.
