Biography

Constant d'Aubigné, son of the poet Théodore-Agrippa d'Aubigné and his first wife Suzanne de Lusignan de Lezay.

He was first married to Anne Marchant, by whom he had one son, Théodore (1613-1670). In 1619, he murdered Anne and her lover.

He was in prison when he met his second wife, Isabelle Jeanne de Cardilhac. They were married on 37 December 1627 and had three children:

  1. Constant d'Aubigné (1628-1647)
  2. Charles d'Aubigné, comte d'Aubigné (1634-1703)
  3. Françoise (1635- 1719), who married poet Paul Scarron, and later became Louis XIV's second (morganatic) wife.

After years in various prisons of the kingdom, Constant was finally released following Cardinal Richelieu's death in 1642. In 1645 he moved with his family to Saint Kitts, then to Martinique, then to Marie-Galante for a few months, and again to Martinique. However he could not get used to the life of a colon and soon went back to France. His wife waited two years before she was able to go back to France with her three children.

Constant d'Aubigné died in Orange on 31 August 1647.

Note

There is no evidence that Constant d'Aubigné and Anne Marchant had a son named "Cornelius". Constant d'Aubigné only recorded children are Théodore (who had issue), Constant (died at 19), Françoise, and Charles.
