About the Author

Jonathan Clements has worked as a translator, voice actor or dubbing director on over 70 anime, including Grey: Digital Target, Sol Bianca and Musashi: Dream of the Last Samurai. He was formerly the editor of Manga Max magazine, a contributing editor of Newtype USA, and is now a contributing editor to The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, with special responsibility for China and Japan. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, and his latest solo book is Anime: A History (British Film Institute, 2013).

Helen McCarthy was the founding editor of Anime UK magazine, editor of Manga Mania magazine, and the author of Anime! A Beginner’s Guide, the first book in the English language on the medium. She has appeared in several anime as a voice actress and produced the UK release of Beast Warriors. Her books include Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation, 500 Essential Anime You Must Own, Manga Cross-Stitch and The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga, which won the Harvey Award. She has just completed A Brief History of Manga for Ilex Press.

Dr Jonathan Clements is the author of many books on East Asian history, including biographies of emperors and empresses, statesmen and warriors, foreign visitors and outcast rebels. His works have been translated into over a dozen languages, including French, Spanish, Korean and Dutch. His history of the Silk Road, and his biographies of the First Emperor of China, Empress Wu and Wellington Koo have all been published in Chinese.
He has been a consultant and talking head on TV programs including Emperor's Ghost Army (PBS/Nova), Koxinga: Sailing into History (National Geographic), Raiders of the Jade Empire (Smithsonian), and Ancient Black Ops: The 47 Ronin (American Heroes). In 2016, he became the presenter of Route Awakening (National Geographic), a series investigating the origins of several key Chinese cultural icons.

Helen McCarthy (1951- ) has been researching and writing about Japanese popular culture since 1981. After a decade hearing that there was "no interest in that sort of thing" she founded a magazine, Anime UK, to disprove the claim. Her first book was published just over a year later, and she's been writing about anime, manga and Japan ever since. Her work has been translated into Chinese, French, Italian and Korean.
In 2010 she won a Harvey Award - the Oscars of the comics world - for her tenth book, 'The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga'. The book was also nominated for an Eisner Award. Helen's other awards include a Japan Foundation Award for furthering understanding of Japanese culture in the United Kingdom, and a Society of Authors/Sasakawa Foundation award.
She designs needlework, which led to the creation of "Manga Cross-Stitch", a book for those who want to use the energy of Japanese popular culture in their own embroidery. Combining a basic cross stitch course and a potted history of manga with a toolkit for designers and a wealth of fresh, enjoyable, easy-to-stitch charts, it has been welcomed by a host of stitchers.
She also writes poetry and tweets haiku and random nonsense daily. In her spare time, she studies and re-creates historic clothing and costume. She lives in London with an artist and a universe of toys.

I bought this encyclopedia for my son's birthday. He was tentative when it arrived and he saw it had no pictures, but once he started studying the contents, he got excited to have it. It's a truly comprehensive, hefty tome. I can't say more about it, as I haven't consumed any content, but I can say my 21-year-old really likes it.

I wanted to get an update to the paperback 2006 encyclopedia in my library, so I got this Kindle version to save a bit of room. One caveat, there are NO illustrations in the Kindle edition. I just hope the editors will release another update down the line as there's tons of anime after 2015.

Don't be Fooled by the trick of length for an Empty Work

This is a large and hefy work that cost $98 a copy. The most important question to ask at that price is: is the book worth it? The short answer is ‘no’ and this is why it is not worth the money.

The first problem is the work is not comprehensive as one would expect for the price. What is missing is of note, we do not find Gay Anime such a ‘Yuri on Ice’ and ‘Doukyuusei’ which makes one wonder if there is a homosphobic censorship at work.

The second problem is that the articles are shorter than one often expects. The information is well-known and does not offer any unique insights. One can find more on Wikipedia for free.

In short, do not let the size fool you, Jonathan Clements and Helen McCarthy did not do a good job compared to an average fan site online. Save your money to buy real DVDs.

If you are into anime, then there is nothing better out there (not even online). It's a huge book, you're really getting value for money on poundage alone, let alone the information contained inside. If you are an academic,the 'Thematics' alone will get you and extra grade mark ;-) If you are otaku you can really bore your your friends with insight, history and detail that no one cares about, but is guaranteed to make you look super clever (you still won't score with th opposite sex though) ;-)

I bought both hard-back and Kindle version- Kindle version is the no-brainer.

I meant to use this book as a reference, but beyond the already well-known and well-documented works for which one can easily find information using an online search engine, this book is of little interest. It does not even seem to contain any information on Toei films before Hakujaden (Tale of the White Serpent). One would think that such an influential force in the medium would have been given more attention than that. Opinion pieces are sprinkled throughout the book for no apparent reason, and actual information for most entries is lacking in comparison with free online databases.

The authors would likely find their time better spent on a similarly themed, complete volume with emphasis on older and less documented works that lack English-language sources of information.
