Very good album. Too bad the sound quality on the live version of "Cosmic Slop" is too muddy.

Just a little itty bit worse than Tales of Kidd Funkadelic, there are a lot of decent moments throughout the record, but it lacks the wow factor of their best work and the cohesiveness of their upper 8/10's.

The vocals are pretty standard for P-Funk, I wish there were more memorable vocal lines and melodies sprinkled throughout, I really love the more chorus oriented tracks from the groups but this album just doesn't really have that, being much more verse heavy with the exception of You Scared the Lovin' Outta Me, but even then it just doesn't have the same effect. All that being said the vocals still work, the multiple vocalists sound great together and manage to pull off a lot of cool tone and charisma.

The guitar is better than I expected, and that's apparently because Eddie Hazel led on the title track and Comin' around (Shoutout Jamauja for that), which honestly really brought the album up, even though Mike wasn't bad by any means, just less tonally interesting. Bernie took a bit of a backseat but still sounded great, and the bass and drums were standard.

The highlights were Comin' Round the Mountain, Hardcore Jollies, and Cosmic Slop Live (Idk why this was here), while there weren't any bad tracks but none of the other ones really struck me as noteworthy. The album art is bad, there's no clear central image but the whole thing is vaguely gross, there's also too much going on with how little is actually happening. Overall, not bad at all but its probably one of their worst in an era where they were still good, still not below America Eats It's Young though, with great guitar tracks from Ed. 7.8/10

The album by Funkadelic dedicated to all the guitar players in the world, Hardcore Jollies gives you non-stop guitar-centric performances by a band that usually focuses on a full band sound, and the results are bangers after bangers. Let me make it clear, for a guitar-heavy album by Funkadelic this did a damn good job, especially considering that Eddie Hazel is nowhere to be found on here. Garry Shider, Glenn Goins and Michael Hampton take over his duties on here completely, and they just kill it. Every song has one great riff after another great solo, grooves on top of grooves on top of grooves and the loose, yet relaxed atmosphere you would want from a Funkadelic album. The songs themselves are all super tight, feature some fantastic vocal performances again, amazing hooks, fun lyrics that occasionally turn sharply critical, but on here it's really all about that guitar, and boy does it deliver on that.

Again, Eddie Hazel was not involved with this, but the band makes it exceedingly clear that they didn't necessarily need him to rock hard as hell. Hardcore Jollies is a guitar-centric album by guitar-aficionados for guitar-aficionados, and it delivers the full package. Super fun, super engaging and finger-blisteringly complex.

Made up of tracks recorded at the same sessions as Tales of Kidd Funkadelic (the last albums to include original members Fuzzy Haskins, Calvin Simon and Grady Thomas), apart from a few of their fretful p-funk dance-chants like "Comin' Round the Mountain" (featuring a sprightly guitar solo), "Smokey" (which escalates into synthesizer and vocal disarray) and "If You Got Funk, You Got Style" (that ends in a splintered party mode), Hardcore Jollies also included some of their rockier ("Hardcore Jollies"), more relaxed ("Soul Mate"), sexual ("Cosmic Slop") and sugary ("You Scared the Lovin' Outta Me") moments.

The boys get back on track with Hardcore Jollies.
The goofiness remains, but the funk is heavier and unabashedly drenched in a rock undertone.
Consistency is key…and it is all here, along with better songwriting than recent releases dictated.
The production is on absolute point without question.
Could it be now they were with a major label and were putting their best foot forward?
No more of this Funkadelic afterthought to sister group Parliament type sh*t?

Hardcore Jollies is a very heavy release.
…and there are guitars all over the place.
One of their better releases sitting in their entire catalog.

One of Funkadelic's most underrated albums, possibly because it's one of the last albums to feature the psych rock-dominated sound that they'd been exploring since the beginning and it doesn't feature Eddie Hazel. So yes, it doesn't necessarily tread new ground and it's missing Hazel's luscious licks. Still, it is very guitar heavy (it's actually "dedicated to the guitar players of the world") and full of classics. The only number that could conceivably called filler is the live version of "Cosmic Slop", but it's great- maybe even better than the original. It opens with a rave up rock version of "Comin' Round The Mountain" (a brilliant concept, one of my favorite traditional songs growing up) and "If You Got Funk, You Got Style" and "You Scared The Lovin' Outta Me" are two of their best sing-alongs. Special notice must also be given to the title track, which extends the frenetic intro to the original Parliament version of "I Call My Baby Pussycat" into a killer jam- one of Funkadelic's best instrumentals. Great album.

This one just leaves an unimpressionable taste in my mouth. At least Tales of Kidd Funkadelic tried to get my attention, by throwing a 12 minute piece in the middle along with some poor lyrical choices, this one just seems to come and go without real motive or passion. For the first time I felt Funkadelic spat out a collection of Funk songs for the sake of having to. Nothing grabs me, and the moment to moment fluidity I expect from them just wasn't present here. There's no "waiting for it..." moment because it never arrives.

I guess the only thing I truly like on here is the closer 'Adolescent Funk,' mainly because it's got a nice overall sound. The instrumentation all goes well together, mixing a palate of smooth and crunchy pieces, especially when those breathy vocals come in at the end. But apart from that nothing really sticks. The opener 'Comin' Round The Mountain' is really the only other thing I find redeemable here. Originally 'If You Got Funk, You Got Style' would have been a go-getter, but with One Nation Under a Groove's 'Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock!?' releases the year later, with virtually the same message and sound but way better, this track becomes mute.

Other than that there's not much more to say about Hardcore Jollies. It absolutely has the same aesthetic as its predecessor, which means I won't like either, but I suppose this one is more well-ordained. The pieces fit together better. And I'm sure as hell glad the one live track they thrown on here repurposing an old dandy, 'Cosmic Slop (Live)', isn't a total loss that I'd expect to have regurgitated the last track verbatim. They actually sound pretty damn good live so I'm okay with putting it on here despite my irritation towards that move.
