City of London Corporation is seeking consultants for a series of summer renovations at the City of London School for Girls [Deadline: 11 June 2024]

The consultants chosen for the estimated £500,000 contract will design and deliver a series of minor upgrades and cyclical repairs to the private school which is located in the centre of the Grade II-listed Chamberlin, Powell and Bon-designed Barbican Estate.

The project, planned to complete in 2028, comes five years after earlier plans by Nicholas Hare Architects to expand the City of London School for Girls by creating new building by the pool overlooking St Giles’ terrace were shelved. Proposals for the latest upgrades must support the corporation’s aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions from its own operations by 2027.

According to the brief: ‘The project brief is to deliver a programme of combined Minor Improvements and Cyclical Works to refurbish the City of London School for Girls campus within the Barbican.

‘The brief is concerned with delivery of the final three years of a six-year programme. The commissioned works fall into four main categories: Critical Major M&E Service Replacement Works; Main Block Fabric Replacement & Repair Works; Prep Block Fabric Replacement & Repair Works; Internal Refurbishment Works.’

The City of London Corporation is the municipal governing body for the UK capital’s historic centre, which is home to several thousand residents and many leading financial institutions.

The City of London Corporation is mid-way through a range of ambitious projects centred around the creation of a new Culture Mile district which will transform the north-west corner of the Square Mile between Moorgate and Farringdon into a cultural hub over the next 10 to 15 years.

Earlier this month, Matthew Lloyd Architects won an open tender for the repair and maintenance of the City of London’s Grade I-listed Mansion House.

The latest project comes almost three years after Morris+Company and Freehaus won an international competition for a £19 million revamp of the nearby City of London School for Boys.

The winning City of London School for Girls team will be expected to feature a project manager and quantity surveyor, building fabric and architectural surveying consultants, and mechanical and electrical consultants.

Bids for the latest commission will be evaluated 45 per cent on quality, 15 per cent on responsible procurement and 40 per cent on price. Applicants must hold employer’s liability insurance of £5 million.
