      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Wacky, inventive, and endlessly quotable, Police Squad! is a hysterically funny leap forward for TV comedy that was tragically ahead of its time.

Eric Mink St. Louis Post-Dispatch Perhaps the best comparison is with an out-of-control roller coaster that breaks for commercials. Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Noel Holston Orlando Sentinel Now Abrahams, Zucker and Zucker have taken aim at another seemingly unspoofable genre -- the television cop series -- with generally hilarious results. Jan 29, 2021 Full Review David Hinckley New York Daily News For those who have waited a quarter century to get even with Dragnet, this is it. Sight gags, puns, absurd non sequiturs. Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Stuart D. Bykofsky Philadelphia Daily News One big question is whether or not Nielsen has the seriocomic ability to float this series. On the basis of tonight's [premiere], the answer is no. Jan 29, 2021 Full Review Sandra Earley Miami Herald There are so many laughs in Police Squad! that half of them can fail and leave enough to spare. StephenPaul C LOL, the funniest 6 single-season episodes ever!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/08/23 Full Review Asim B Absolutely brilliant! How this show didn't get a second season will always be beyond me… Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review harrison r Nothing better. So funny. So much better than the Naked Gun trilogy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a great series. I loved some of the repetitive bits ... the shoeshine guy, the lab, the celebrity assassination cold open. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review antonis k Police Squad is an excellent crafted comedy series that unfortunately didn't last long but it definitely left it's mark on TV alongside the excellent talent of the late Leslie Nielsen. (A+) Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Police Squad is only 6 episodes long, but it is 6 episodes of continuous humor, and expertly-crafted humor at that. Leslie Nielson, previously only known for drama and thrillers, plays the main character perfectly BECAUSE he never once makes it look like he's telling a joke - He plays it 100% straight, as if he's completely unaware that there's something funny taking place, and it sells the humor more effectively. The comedy itself is largely either visual humor or somewhat low-brow humor, but there are sudden bits of legitimately high-brow wordplay and observational humor thrown in as well, preventing the show from being purely Stupid-But-Funny. You can get through all 6 episodes in the time it takes to watch most Summer Blockbusters, so if you're a fan of classic-era rapid-fire comedy, I cannot recommend this enough.
