Who is Vanessa Vadim?

Vanessa was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Hauts-de-Seine, France, on 28 September 1968 – her zodiac sign is Virgo and she holds both French and American nationality. Vanessa is a film director, cinematographer and ecological activist, while she’s perhaps known best for being the oldest child of Jane Fonda, a famous American actress, political activist and former model.

Vanessa was raised in New York City, USA by her mother, and her father Roger Vadim, the late French screenwriter, producer and director, who passed away on 11 February 2000, aged 72. She has a maternal half-brother, Troy O’Donovan Garity, who’s today a famous actor; his father is the late American author, politician and activist Thomas Emmet Hayden. Vanessa and Troy also have an adoptive African-American sister Mary Luana Williams, plus Vanessa has five paternal half-siblings.

She grew up being interested in acting, mostly because of her mother’s career, and because Jane often took Vanessa to her red carpet events and on to her movie sets. She was only seven years old when she appeared alongside her mother in the 1978 episode “AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Henry Fonda” (tribute to her grandfather) of the series “AFI Life Achievement Award”, and the same year saw her appear in the TV special “The 50th Annual Academy Awards”.

Vanessa continued to keep her mother company at various events, but still spent her early life focused on her education. She was into numerous activities while attending a private high school, including acting, dancing and singing, and upon matriculating in 1986, she enrolled at Brown University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in literature and society in 1990. Vanessa continued her education at New York University, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in English and creative writing in 1992.

In addition to earlier appearances, in 1980, Vanessa was alongside her mother for the TV special “52nd Annual Academy Awards”, and in 1987, in “The 59th Annual Academy Awards”.

The year 1989 saw her featured in the TV special “The 9th Annual Vira Awards”, and in 1993, Vanessa appeared in the historical documentary film “The Last Party”. It was directed by Mark Benjamin and Marc Levin, starred Robert Downey Jr, Bill Clinton and Ann Palmer, and follows the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

Vanessa co-produced the 1997 short documentary movie “Blue Is Beautiful”, and in 2002, she produced, directed and edited the short documentary movie “The Quilts of Gee’s Bend”.

The series aired from 2015 to 2019, and won one of the 38 awards for which it was nominated, including five Primetime Emmy nominations.

Troy was raised in Santa Monica, California, and started acting at Santa Barbara’s Laurel Springs Camp for the Arts. He was eight years old when he launched his acting career, with an appearance in the 1981 drama movie “On Golden Pond”, which starred his mother and grandfather Henry Fonda.

He appeared in only two movies in the ‘90s: the 1996 western comedy “The Cherokee Kid”, and the 1997 action mystery thriller “Conspiracy Theory”.

He gained recognition in 2003, when he portrayed the lead character Barry Winchell in the biographical crime drama “Soldier’s Girl”, directed by Frank Pierson, it also starred Lee Pace and Andre Braugher, and follows a soldier who has fallen in love with a transsexual man; the film won three of the 20 awards for which it was nominated, including two Primetime Emmy nominations.

A couple of his other notable performances in the 2000s were in the 2004 action crime comedy film “After the Sunset”, the 2007 science fiction thriller movie “Sunshine”, and the 2008 crime film “Winged Creatures”.

In 2011, he appeared in the thriller movie “The Good Doctor”, and the same year saw Troy play a supporting character in the crime series “The Playboy Club”. He has since appeared in a couple of hit movies and TV series, such as the 2014 action thriller film “Red Sky”, the 2016 comedy movie “Barbershop: The Next Cut”, and the 2021 comedy series “On the Verge”.

Troy has won two of the six awards for which he’s been nominated: he and his colleagues won a 2002 Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Award for Best Ensemble, for their performance in “Barbershop”, and Troy won a 2003 Young Hollywood Award for Standout Performance. He was also nominated for a 2004 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Miniseries or a Motion Picture Made for Television, for “Soldier’s Girl”.

On 27 August 2007, Troy exchanged vows with the American actress Simone Bent, in a private ceremony at Columbia University’s St. Paul’s Chapel. They have no children together as of January 2022.
