Year Articles[ኮድ አርም]

Hi, I came here for interwiki linking 'year' articles to the Ripuarian Wikipedia. I've seen in Category:መንታ_መንገዶች that there are only few 'year' articles that could be interwiki linked. As it seems, these articles are pretty systematic, and boring to type. They could as well be automatically generated by a bot. If you agree, and if you can provide me with the exact information of how the calendars relate, or point me to list, an article, a website, etc. explaining it in a language that I understand, I could set a bot up that would do the labour of adding these articles. Hallo, ich bin hierhergekommen, um Jahreartikel mit der Ripuarischen Wikipedia zu verlinken. In der Category:መንታ_መንገዶች sehe ich, daß es bisher nur wenige gibt, die man bereits verlinken könnte. Sie sehen alle sehr ähnlich aus, langweilig zum Eingeben. Sie könnten genausogut automatisch von einem Programm (Bot) angelegt werden. Wenn Ihr hier einverstanden seid, und mir die notwendigen Informationen geben könnt oder einen Artikel oder eine Webseite nennen könnt, wo ich in einer für mich verständlichen Sprache finde, wie die Kalender ineinander umgerechnet werden, dann könnte ich einen Bot aufetzen, der die Arbeit des Anlegens übernimmt. If you want to make እ.ኤ.አ. disambiguation pages for any European years from 1901 to 2099, they all start the new Ethiopian year on Sep. 11, except for the years listed in the first column at Wikipedia:የቀን መለወጫ, when they start on Sep. 12. So the articles for 1999 እ.ኤ.አ., 1995 እ.ኤ.አ., 1991 እ.ኤ.አ., 1987 እ.ኤ.አ., etc. should follow the pattern of 2003 እ.ኤ.አ.. Years before 1901 would follow a different pattern. Years from 9 on can be determined from the software at http://www.funaba.org/en/calendar-conversion.cgi . The disambiguation pages do increase the article count, but ideally links to them will eventually be replaced with links pointing to the correct Ethiopian year, so they are of temporary use and have only been created on an as-needed basis. I can always find out if any are in greater demand by checking the top 1000 Special:Wantedpages which shows how many redlinks each one has in other pages. For example, right now 1976 እ.ኤ.ኣ. at #745 is the most wanted such page, with two pages containing this redlink, and they are a user page and the associated talk page, not even articles. (For consistency the last character would be spelled አ. instead of ኣ.) In other words, these year disambiguation pages are not a really great priority at the moment.
My procedure for creating regular year pages that show events has also been to pick the years off the wanted list that have the most listable events on other articles. When we got about five years in any one decade, I created these decade indexes: 1950ዎቹ and 1960ዎቹ. If you look at these two articles, it seems like something a bot could be programmed to do for other decades, that would be very useful. The three links at top are previous, current and next centuries, in all cases the century number such as 19, 20, 21 can be followed by ኛ (ordinal suffix). The links in the second section are decades, note that in all these cases the decade number is followed by ዎቹ, except for the '10s which is followed by ሮቹ. The third section has links to the years in that decade, note that all of these articles have also been made to link to each other, which could also be automated. Can your bot do that? My bot is currently creating stub articles for those (european) years from 1 to 2010 which do not exist yet, that is ~850 new articles. They have already links to the እ.ኤ.አ. disambiguation pages - I do not mind to create all of those ~1980 articles with the bot, too. My labour is the same, no matter how many pages created. I understand that the disambiguation articles are unimportant for you, but I see them as valuable for interlinking between the wikies of various languages and cultures. I think, there is nothing else, that an article about an european year of an european Wikipedia could link to in the Amharic Wikipedia, isn't it? Also, even if there are not many Ethiopian year articles yet, they will come, and it's nice the have the links already in place, I think. --Purodha Blissenbach 12:07, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay, several external incidents kept me from continuing. Now, I have a bot setup ready for the year disambiguation articles, as the 1st step. These questions remain:
  1. The article 1889 እ.ኤ.አ. starts with Template:ሹካ, which is different from all other such articles. The others use Template:መንታ, which is also called internally by Template:ሹካ, so finally there is currently not a real difference between them.
  2. Inside Template:መንታ, there is the code to put the pages including it into the category:መንታ መንገዶች.
    Quoting from my talk page:
    (...) The category መንታ መንገዶች means all disambiguation pages, not just the year-related ones. They may need to be moved to another subcat at some point, which I know is a lot of work. (...) ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 12:31, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
    Thus I suggest these amendments:
    1. Give Template:መንታ a parameter, which is the name of the category. If the parameter is omitted, then the category:መንታ መንገዶች is automatically used. Else, it would usually be a subcat thereof.
      (Since that does not break anything, I simply implement that. If you feel that would be a bad idea, just revert my chance)
    2. In the disambiguation articles, such as 2000 እ.ኤ.አ., the bot might use {{:Template:መንታ|መንታ መንገዶች}} which can later be changed if needed in all bot created articles, or better, the bot uses a new template which only calls {{:Template:መንታ|መንታ መንገዶች}} internally, so we have only one central place at which all year disambiguation articles can be put in a subcategory with only one change. I strongly suggest the latter, but I don't know how to name the new template in amharic.
  3. I suggest to have a template for the two lines of disambiguation displaying the dates a well. Thus, if modifications should be required at some time in the future, they need to be made only at one place.
Since I do not know how the suggested templates should be named, I give them temporary names, and ask you to alter them to something useful in amharic language. I let the bot upload 2000 እ.ኤ.አ. with the temporary names Template:European year A.D. disambiguation head and Template:European year_A.D. disambiguation text , so as to have a sample demonstrating how they work. --Purodha Blissenbach 16:18, 13 December 2006 (UTC)


This looks great, I suggest the subcat with all the European year disambig pages be called Category:ፈረንጅ አመቶች ("European years"). It doesn't matter what you call the template, you can use whatever works...! ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 16:49, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

The pages the bot made so far end in እ.ኤ.ኣ. like some of the one that already were there... but others end in እ.ኤ.አ. (I don't know if you saw the slight difference in the last character). Either one is considered correct, but I would prefer to have them all end in እ.ኤ.አ. instead of እ.ኤ.ኣ. I was also wondering if we ought to link the words January September and December, they can always redirect to articles explaining those months. As for the templates, moving them later wouldn't involve changing every article because a redirected template automatically calls the template through the old name. On my display, the difference between አ and ኣ is a bit hard to recognize, depending on the font. One of them was used in the page title, the other in the page text, that I took as a refeernce. Since you essentially say, they are interchangeable, I tried to make it so, as you said, and in addition add a redirect from the ...ኣ. page titles to the ...አ. page titles for all years, since users can likely be expected to be typing either. Unfortunately, the pywikipediabot software framework that I am building upon, refuses to accept አ as a valid unicode character. All technical problems solved. The work can begin.
  • May I suggest to flag Purbo T as a bot, if you like so, so as to not have it clutter the RecentChanges for everyone?
  • If you don't advise otherwise, existing year articles shall be replaced so as to have them all uniformly use the templates. Edit history is kept, of course.
  • Usually, the bot would run at a pace of about 4 edits a minute, thus it would take roughly about a day to have all year articles and redirects created. Please tell me, if you like something else. Both quicker and slower are possible.

Unfortunately, only someone at Bureaucrat level or higher can give a bot flag, and we have no Bureaucrat here, so that means only a steward from :meta can flag a bot. If it only takes a day or so, at least it won't be a permanent problem. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:30, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

The LocalisationUpdate extension has gone live[ኮድ አርም]

The LocalisationUpdate extension is now enabled for all Wikimedia projects. From now on new localisations that become available in SVN will become available to your project within *** hours. Your localisations get into SVN from translatewiki.net typically within a day and at worst in two days. This is a huge improvement from the old practice where the localisations became available with new software. This could take weeks, even months.

The localisations done by our community at translatewiki.net are committed to SVN typically every day. When the system messages in English are the same as the local messages, they will now be inserted in a file and are available for use in all our projects in a timely manner

What this means for you[ኮድ አርም]

Local messages have an impact on the performance of our system. It is best when messages are as much as possible part of the system messages. In order to remove unnecessary duplication, all the messages that have a local localisation and are exactly the same as the system message will be removed. What we ask you to do is to compare and proof read the messages in translatewiki.net and the local messages. You can then either remove local messages when the translatewiki.net message is to be preferred or, you can update the message at translatewiki.net.

Messages that are specific to your project will have to stay as they are. You do want to check if the format and the variables of the message are still the same.

When you localise at translatewiki.net, your messages will be used in all Wikimedia projects and eventually in all MediaWiki based projects. This is how we provide the standard support for your language. When messages change, at translatewiki.net you will be prompted to revisit your translations. The best way to answer the first question is to visit the translatewiki.net. Change the language to your language, select the “vector” skin and add the advanced tool bar in in the preferences and check out the new functionality. And make some changes in your user page. When there is a need to improve on the localisation, please make the necessary changess . It should update your localisation straight away. We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Usability_issues.

When there are problems with the support of MediaWiki for your language, we really want to know about this. It is best to report each issue separately. In this way there will be no large mass of issues to resolve but we can address each issue on its own. Consider issues with the display of characters, the presentation of your script, the position of the side bar, the combination of text with other languages, scripts. It is best to try this in an environment like the prototype wiki as it provides you with a clean, basic and up to date environment. The prototype wiki is available for five languages but you can select any of them, change the preferences to your language and test out MediaWiki for your language.

We would like you to report each issue individually at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language issues. The issues you raise will all be assessed. It is important to keep each issue separate, because this will make it easier to understand the issues and find solutions.

ባለፈው ከElfalem ጋር ስለአማርኛው ፊደላት ተወያይተን ነበር። I have noticed that in other Wikipedias like Arabic Wikipedia anyone can search an article with English name and get the article in Arabic. Since redirecting may not solve the problem permanently and the Amharic font may not be visible on the machine of every user, we can add the article's corresponding English name on the body of the article so users can find the Amharic body of the article by using it's English title name. Please we got to talk about this. Since the Amharic language has it's own rules of spelling a word, we have to decide which rules are useful for this site and which are not. ምሳሌ፡ ፀሐይ is the correct spelling but users write ጸሀይ as these letters appear on one hit. But the article can't be found using this name and the user miss that well bodied article. So here the Amharic spelling language affect our site negatively. If you go to my አባል ገጽ you will see my attempt at a new main page to coincide with the new wikipedia look. I would really appreciate if you guys give me ideas suggestion and criticisms. I am thinking making the main page more dynamic so we have information on new articles right upfront, and then having a separate page for learners which will be accessible from the top tabs, as well so that the main page does not look congested I am thinking moving all "selected articles", "wikipedia language" and "wikipedia sisters" into their own pages which will be accessible again via tabs.

With regard to the "wikipedia languages" section, I've been wondering if we shouldn't just scrap it, since it hasn't been much maintained for years, and is probably badly out of date, and we might not really need it. Wow! You keep on amazing me, Hgetnet. First I would like to point out my favorite parts. I think the transparent globe logo with the welcome message and today's date is simply PERFECT. I also really like the big Lalibela picture although we might need to polish it to make it look smoother but that is not a big issue at all. The small box that says "ምርጥ ጽሁፎች" kind of looks out of place and it keeps moving around when you change tabs. Regarding the color combination, we will eventually have to settle with either the purple theme or the older green one because they don't nice together in my opinion. ፈቃደ: since I did not know how to link to the latest language list I have left it as it is. If you can show me how, I can then link it up. Elfalem: as u suggested I have fixed the lalibela picture. I know it makes the page a little contrived but I felt if I left it out the page will look very cold and unresponsive. So i tried to make it feel a little unique by including the pic. The ምርጥ ጽሁፍ issue is now fixed. The color combo is still up for discussion. This is by no means the final product -- if u have suggestion or want to change it completely I am ok with it. I tried to leave enough comment in there so if u want to change it is easy to see what I was doing. .... I really think there is a lot more to be done..but this is as far as i can go before the august 25 deadline.

Hgetnet, thank you for all that you have done. I'll try to improve the layout at the top since the Lalibela picture appears lower (and superimposes on the tab pages) because it is not able to fit it inline with the welcome message and the other links. Anyways, I think the most important issue regarding the upcoming skin change is concerning Amharic input. I have added code to the vector skin so that Ge'ez input is the default when you try to edit and 'Esc' can be used to toggle with the Latin alphabet. However, I was not able to get the message at the top that says "use 'Esc' to switch between...." to appear. hi Elfalem My esc button does not work. Well it used to work when I as using firefox but it has stopped toggling after I switched to chrome. And no matter how much I try I was unable to beat the deadline because of the lay out issue I had with respect to መለጠፊያ፡ዋናው ገጽ. If I leave out the |}, somehow the code bleeds through out the rest of the code and mess up the lay out of everything else. I know there is something wrong with the መለጠፊያ፡ ዋናው ገጽ ... I am tired of looking for it. If you have experience in these things I wish u could give it a once over. Also in the Beta, I dont see any option to toggle between Amharic and English when posting. Great, the |} issue is fixed. Yes, there is no option that says to toggle in the beta version. But if you actually press esc, it should toggle. So the functionality is there but I just don't know how to write the message at the top. And no its not because you switched to chrome, it should work in any browser. The meta translators are already actively engaged in the annual drive to distribute our messages and we encourage you to do the same, but we would like to point everyone to the developments we've made in banner messages- from creation to commentary to the ones that will go live for test and for the drive itself in November. It's one of our goals to make sure that all volunteers know that there is a place for them in the Fundraising drive. We've started the setup on meta for both banner submission, statistical analysis, and grouping volunteers together that would like to find specific focus and work in that area.

This year the Wikimedia Foundation is taking a proactive stance in reaching out to each and every Wikimedia project and volunteer to find innovation, collaboration, and collation of ideas from the community driven process. Thanks so much Codex. May be the right side pictures need a bypass refresh. Can you try ctrl+F5 or Shift+F5 or Shift+Refresh or any other combination of keys so that you can bypass the local cache? Also the tabs are implemented using the Metacaixa መለጠፊያ. Sorry it is in Spanish but so long as you provide Tab Title, Tab Icon and Tab Body (here u can use plain letters or መለጠፊያ ), it will faithfully translate it into a tab. That's Spanish? I thought it was Portuguese! The problem for me isn't caches, it seems to be a 'screen width' thing. On my browser, I can see the two pics on the Front page, but only a strip along the leftmost half-inch or so of each pic. I don't know if anyone else is having his problem. It is actually Catalan which is spoken in Spain and surrounding areas. I can be very imprecise, sorry. The picture problem is stumping me because I tested it using 3 browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and IE8). I am using a laptop which is 15". Do you still not see the pictures when you zoom out in your browser? I can reduce the size of pictures if you can see them when you zoom out. Please let me know. I just tested it in 3 browsers too, and got very different results with each one. Normally I use Firefox. With Opera, I can see the whole pictures, but there are other screen-width issues. On both Firefox and Opera, the last tab on the tab box is broken in half so that the word በየቋንቋው comes out underneath ዋናው ገጽ... With Explorer, The tabs all come out on the same row, but the pics are only strips as on Firefox. This may be because I have such an old, unsupported Windows (ME) on my old computer, that I have to use old versions of these browsers, ie Firefox 2 and IE 6. I have gotten rid of the last Tab - I have put the content of that tab together with the 4th tab. The IE browser has issues with respect to the pictures and I really dislike how the fonts appear in IE. Anyhow, since I fixed the tab issue, I am hoping everything works fine for you - tabs and pictures in Opera. If you still want the pictures to work in firefox, since I dont know your screen size and the issues I will give you the template pages so you can experiment with them. I'm sorry that such a dispute had to occur. However, I don't I fully understand the issue because it seems to me that the Book of Aksum view is still in the article. It's that previously, the article was NPOV as it mentioned everything about all the significant POVs, including the Book of Aksum's, Ato Tsegaye's, and Liddell's, including the fact that nobody has been found suggesting that Greek etymology before Liddell. The classical view was Pliny's view that it was nmed for a person. But I was also very rudely treated on several talkpages, threatened with sanction, and told that Liddell is correct (which the article now has been forced to say) as well as that the other views are fringe theories and folk etymologies. If anything is a folk etymology, it's Liddell if you ask me. Never mind their insistence that the Bible is "mythology" because everyone who disagrees is a "fringe theorist" and should be blocked. The appeal from Jimmy Wales and the corresponding banner have been tested head-to-head with other successful banners, and the results are clear: it's our best performing message... by a lot. This year we have a lofty fundraising goal; we need all of our banners to bring in donations like the Jimmy Appeal, but no one wants to keep the Jimmy banner up for two months. We want to run donor quotes, and other wonderful ideas, but we have to have banners that work as well as or better than the Jimmy appeal.

Actually, at this time it appears the prefix is በር፡ (with a serez) and not በር: (with a colon). So as far as the software can tell all of the pages starting with በር:: are still articles counted in article space! For them to be treated as portals as it is now, they would have to be moved to (በር፡:ምናምን)... ! And the titles would still need to be changed again when the prefix correctly becomes በር... Grrr! I hate these stupid software bugs! A tiny seemingly insignificant detail of punctuation causes one problem, that leads to another and another, and gets worse with each fix, until everything is hopelessly tangled up!
At present ALL of the pages beginning with በር:: are inaccessible. They cannot be deleted, moved, or viewed. The only way to see what they would have looked like, is by clicking on the creation history, but you still can't get to the source code from there to copy them. We may be able to reconstruct them in the right place, but I do hope these inaccessible pages don't become permanent edifices that occupy space, cannot be deleted, and must be worked around. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 13:13, 15 ሜይ 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was able to access the full source code of the inaccessible pages through my RSS feed. I have reconstructed them in the correct portal namespace. Those inaccessible pages do seem to be causing another problem: None of the 'special pages' has updated since May 16. Normally, most of them were updated every 3 days at the latest. If you look at the 'shortest pages' list, there is now a blank space in numbers 2 and 3, that seems to represent some of these malformed portals, the ones with two semi-colons. I would guess this bug has something to do with keeping the software from re-loading the page. This is way beyond my understanding or ability to fix, and I think a developer should be contacted. We have initiated a writing competition about Ethiopian Culture and Beta Israeli Heritage. It is partially sponsored by the Israeli chapter of Wikimedia Foundation and was welcomed by the Ethiopian ambassador to Israel, as well as other notable persons and organizations.

We currently accept articles submitted in Hebrew, English or French. Of course we'd be happy to expand the competition to articles submitted in Amharic or Tigrigna, but only one of our judges masters the written language well enough to appreciate the quality of the submitted articles.

Language support group for Amharic[ኮድ አርም]

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Announcement: Regional Fundraising Tests Starting Soon![ኮድ አርም]

On the next couple of days we will be kicking off our Regional Fundraising Tests, targeting the countries that we took down for 10 days during our Annual Fundraiser last year. Our main goal is to provide an improved donor experience in each of these countries while decreasing the number of fundraising days.

The campaigns will be grouped by region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Middle East) for better efficiency as we work on localizing currencies, ask strings and local appeals.

Our first test will be on a few Portuguese and English speaking countries in Africa (specifically MZ, AO, CV, GW, ST, BW, NA, ZW), and it will last from 02/07 up to 02/14 (only 7 days!!). This test has the goal to compare the Jimmy appeal vs a local appeal as well as compare high vs low ask strings. Pats Pena

Update on IPv6[ኮድ አርም]

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year[ኮድ አርም]

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out[ኮድ አርም]

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

በውክፔዲያ ላይ ስለ አማርኛ መጻፊያው (Amharic Keyboard Input Method)[ኮድ አርም]

The Narayam extension allows for inputting Amharic text into Wikipedia like the Javascript code we are currently using. It has much better support and works in all text fields (edit, search, summary, etc...). I have been improving the mapping so that it functions just like the system we use right now, except you press "ctrl-M" instead of "Esc" to turn it on/off. The extension is installed at translatewiki. Please test it by changing your language to Amharic and editing pages. I use chrome web browser and the "esc" method never works for me here. So it was nice to see Ctrl-M working there at translatewiki. Also, like you said, the search boxes and other editing options sometimes never switch to Amharic on this website. It would be nice if you can fix it the same way you did it there. Nice work. The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?[ኮድ አርም]

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?[ኮድ አርም]

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can already test it on test2.

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

We have now enabled the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) a month ago and two days ago on the English Wikipedia. Today all the remaining Wikipedias followed.

What does having phase 2 enabled here mean? You are now able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!) The current state is just the beginning though. It will be extended based on feedback we get from you now.

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p159}} in the wiki text of the article on Wikimedia Foundation. This will return “San Francisco” as that is the headquarter location of the non-profit.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:headquarter location}} instead of {{#property:p159}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can test it on test2 if you don't want to do it in an article here.

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

Pywikipedia is migrating to git[ኮድ አርም]

Pywikipedia is migrating to Git so after July 26, SVN checkouts won't be updated If you're using Pywikipedia you have to switch to git, otherwise you will use out-dated framework and your bot might not work properly. This community consultation was commenced on September 24. The following day, two individuals filed a legal opposition against the registration of the Community logo.

The question is whether the Wikimedia Foundation should seek a collective membership mark with respect to this logo or abandon its registration and protection of the trademark.

A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc) was recently adopted by global community consensus (your community received a notice about the discussion). According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on smaller wikis. To the best of our knowledge, your wiki does not have a formal process for removing "advanced rights" from inactive accounts. This means that the stewards will take care of this according to the new admin activity review here.

We have determined that the following users meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for more than 2 years):

  1. Aniten21 (administrator)
  2. Tatari (administrator)
  3. ታታሪ (administrator)

These users will receive a notification soon, asking them to start a community discussion if they want to retain some or all of their rights. If the users do not respond, then their advanced rights will be removed by the stewards.

  • As local 'bureaucrat', I can change editors' status locally if the need ever arises, which so far is only whenever they have passed the community consensus procedure we have to become an admin. Unless these former admins suddenly show up, I have no problem with the global process actions going on now and see no need to supercede it at this time. Changes to the default site typography coming soon[ኮድ አርም]

This week, the typography on Wikimedia sites will be updated for all readers and editors who use the default "Vector" skin. This change will involve new serif fonts for some headings, small tweaks to body content fonts, text size, text color, and spacing between elements. The schedule is:

  • April 1st: non-Wikipedia projects will see this change live
  • April 3rd: Wikipedias will see this change live

This change is very similar to the "Typography Update" Beta Feature that has been available on Wikimedia projects since November 2013. After several rounds of testing and with feedback from the community, this Beta Feature will be disabled and successful aspects enabled in the default site appearance. Users who are logged in may still choose to use another skin, or alter their personal CSS, if they prefer a different appearance. Local common CSS styles will also apply as normal, for issues with local styles and scripts that impact all users.

Hello! Sorry for writing in English. It was noted that on this wiki upload is not fully functional for users, who will experience a very difficult and/or illegal uploading. In fact, the licenses/copyright tags dropdown is empty, making it hard or impossible to comply with copyright requirements during upload itself.

Presumably, you don't have interest nor energies to have hundreds templates with the now required HTML, even less a local EDP. I propose to have

so that you can avoid local maintenance and all users can have a functioning, easy upload interface in their own language. All registered users can upload on Commons and existing files will not be affected.

All this will get done around 2014-07-03.

  1. If you disagree with the proposal, just remove your wiki from the list. Remember also to create MediaWiki:Licenses locally with any content (see a simple example), or uploads will be soon disabled anyway by MediaWiki itself (starting in version 1.24wmf11).

Media Viewer displays images in larger size when you click on their thumbnails, to provide a better viewing experience. Users can now view images faster and more clearly, without having to jump to separate pages — and its user interface is more intuitive, offering easy access to full-resolution images and information, with links to the file repository for editing. The tool has been tested extensively across all Wikimedia wikis over the past six months as a Beta Feature and has been released to the largest Wikipedias, all language Wikisources, and the English Wikivoyage already.

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decisions[ኮድ አርም]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

Change in renaming process[ኮድ አርም]

Single-user login (SUL) finalisation's goal is so that every Wikimedia editor has a single, recognized global account with one username across all projects. As you may know, after a long delay, it's now underway as an effort between bureaucrats, stewards, and Wikimedia Foundation engineers. This will also allow for development of cross-wiki tools like global notifications and watchlists. There is no set date for the completion of single-user login finalization at this time.

The process involves changing all rename processes into one global renaming process. The ability for local bureaucrats to rename users on this wiki will be turned off on Monday, 15 September 2014, as one of the first steps. Global renamers are in the process of being created to make sure projects and languages are represented by the time this occurs. I sent a note to every bureaucrat about this process three weeks ago with an invitation to participate and many have begun requesting to be a part of the group. Together with the stewards, the global renamers will be empowered to help editors work through the often difficult process of getting a global name.

In parting, visit Special:MergeAccount to unify your account if you have never done so. If your local pages about renaming still need to be updated, please do so and consider pointing people to m:SRUC for future rename requests, especially if this project does not have bureaucrats that hold global renamer permissions. Meta RfCs on two new global groups[ኮድ አርም]

Hello all,

There are currently requests for comment open on meta to create two new global groups. The first is a group for members of the OTRS permissions queue, which would grant them autopatrolled rights on all wikis except those who opt-out. That proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Creation of a global OTRS-permissions user group. The second is a group for Wikimedia Commons admins and OTRS agents to view deleted file pages through the 'viewdeletedfile' right on all wikis except those who opt-out. The second proposal can be found at m:Requests for comment/Global file deletion review.

We would like to hear what you think on both proposals. Both are in English; if you wanted to translate them into your native language that would also be appreciated.

It is possible for individual projects to opt-out, so that users in those groups do not have any additional rights on those projects. To do this please start a local discussion, and if there is consensus you can request to opt-out of either or both at m:Stewards' noticeboard.

Global AbuseFilter[ኮድ አርም]

Hello,

AbuseFilter is a MediaWiki extension used to detect likely abusive behavior patterns, like pattern vandalism and spam. In 2013, Global AbuseFilters were enabled on a limited set of wikis including Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki.org, Wikispecies and (in early 2014) all the "small wikis". Recently, global abuse filters were enabled on "medium sized wikis" as well. These filters are currently managed by stewards on Meta-Wiki and have shown to be very effective in preventing mass spam attacks across Wikimedia projects. However, there is currently no policy on how the global AbuseFilters will be managed although there are proposals. There is an ongoing request for comment on policy governing the use of the global AbuseFilters. In the meantime, specific wikis can opt out of using the global AbuseFilter. These wikis can simply add a request to this list on Meta-Wiki. More details can be found on this page at Meta-Wiki. If you have any questions, feel free to ask on m:Talk:Global AbuseFilter.

I am pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 Wikimedia Foundation Elections. This year the Board and the FDC Staff are looking for a diverse set of candidates from regions and projects that are traditionally under-represented on the board and in the movement as well as candidates with experience in technology, product or finance. The FDC Ombud receives complaints and feedback about the FDC process, investigates complaints at the request of the Board of Trustees, and summarizes the investigations and feedback for the Board of Trustees on an annual basis. Please test VisualEditor in your language![ኮድ አርም]

It is very important to us at the Editing Department that VisualEditor works in every language, for every user.

VisualEditor's editing environment is a browser ContentEditable element. This means that your input method editor (IME) should already know how to work with it. However, to make VisualEditor correctly edit wiki pages, we have to stop browsers in lots of ways from breaking the page.

Sometimes this can interfere with IMEs. To make sure we work in your IME, we need your help: please see wikimedia.github.io/VisualEditor/demos/ve/desktop-dist.html#!pages/simple.html. This is the core system inside VisualEditor which lets you write and edit. It is different from the full editor, and some of the tools you are used to will be missing.

We're interested in particular in whether you can write text at all, what happens when you select different candidate texts, and how VisualEditor behaves in general.

We would love to hear from every language, and especially languages which use IMEs, like Japanese, Korean, Indic languages, Arabic and others. Thank you for your help.

Content Translation beta feature is now available[ኮድ አርም]

Hello, Content Translation has now been enabled as an opt-in beta feature on this Wikipedia. To start translating, enable the beta feature and go to Special:ContentTranslation or to your contributions page and create a new translation by selecting the source language, the article name and target language. If the article already exists then a warning will be displayed. After you translate the article, you can publish it directly as a new page on the Wikipedia. In case the article gets created by another user while you were translating, you will see an option to save the newly published translation under your user namespace. The number of published pages can be seen on the Content Translation stats page.

Since, this is the first time we have installed the tool on this Wikipedia, there are chances that there may be some problems or service disruptions which we are not yet aware of. We will be monitoring the usage to check for any failures or issues, but please do let us know on the Content Translation talk page or through Phabricator if you spot any problems that prevent you from using the tool. Pywikibot compat will no longer be supported - Please migrate to pywikibot core[ኮድ አርም]

Pywikibot (then "Pywikipediabot") was started back in 2002. In 2007 a new branch (formerly known as "rewrite", now called "core") was started from scratch using the MediaWiki API. The developers of Pywikibot have decided to stop supporting the compat version of Pywikibot due to bad performance and architectural errors that make it hard to update, compared to core. If you are using pywikibot compat it is likely your code will break due to upcoming MediaWiki API changes (e.g. T101524). It is highly recommended you migrate to the core framework. There is a migration guide, and please contact us if you have any problem.

There is an upcoming MediaWiki API breaking change that compat will not be updated for. If your bot's name is in this list, your bot will most likely break.

HTTPS[ኮድ አርም]

Hi everyone.

Over the last few years, the Wikimedia Foundation has been working towards enabling HTTPS by default for all users, including unregistered ones, for better privacy and security for both readers and editors. This has taken a long time, as there were different aspects to take into account. Our servers haven't been ready to handle it. The Wikimedia Foundation has had to balance sometimes conflicting goals.

Forced HTTPS has just been implemented on all Wikimedia projects. Some of you might already be aware of this, as a few Wikipedia language versions were converted to HTTPS last week and the then affected communities were notified.

Most of Wikimedia editors shouldn't be affected at all. If you edit as registered user, you've probably already had to log in through HTTPS. We'll keep an eye on this to make sure everything is working as it should. Do get in touch with us if you have any problems after this change or contact me if you have any other questions.

I'm pleased to announce the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon.

It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor. In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page on TranslateWiki.

The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store[1]. Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify[2].

If you are at Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4pm (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

There is a proposal at the Commons Village Pump requesting feedback about the thumbnails of static GIF images: It states that static GIF files should have their thumbnails created in PNG. The advantages of PNG over GIF would be visible especially with GIF images using an alpha channel. (compare the thumbnails on the side)

Proposal to create PNG thumbnails of static GIF images[ኮድ አርም]

The thumbnail of this gif is of really bad quality.
How a PNG thumb of this GIF would look like

There is a proposal at the Commons Village Pump requesting feedback about the thumbnails of static GIF images: It states that static GIF files should have their thumbnails created in PNG. The advantages of PNG over GIF would be visible especially with GIF images using an alpha channel. (compare the thumbnails on the side)

Wikidata: Access to data from arbitrary items is coming[ኮድ አርም]

When using data from Wikidata on Wikipedia and other sister projects, there is currently a limitation in place that hinders some use cases: data can only be accessed from the corresponding item. So, for example, the Wikipedia article about Berlin can only get data from the Wikidata item about Berlin but not from the item about Germany. This had technical reasons. We are now removing this limitation. It is already done for many projects. Your project is one of the next ones. We will roll out this feature here on August 12.

We invite you to play around with this new feature if you are one of the people who have been waiting for this for a long time. If you have technical issues/questions with this you can come to d:Wikidata:Contact the development team.

A note of caution: Please be careful with how many items you use for a single page. If it is too many pages, loading might get slow. We will have to see how the feature behaves in production to see where we need to tweak and how.

As I have previously announced here we have now enabled the arbitrary access feature here. This means from now on you can make use of data from any Wikidata item in any article here. Community Wishlist Survey[ኮድ አርም]

Hi everyone! Apologies for posting in English. Translations are very welcome.

The Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is focused on building improved curation and moderation tools for experienced Wikimedia contributors. We're now starting a Community Wishlist Survey to find the most useful projects that we can work on.

For phase 1 of the survey, we're inviting all active contributors to submit brief proposals, explaining the project that you'd like us to work on, and why it's important. Phase 1 will last for 2 weeks. In phase 2, we'll ask you to vote on the proposals. Afterwards, we'll analyze the top 10 proposals and create a prioritized wishlist.

While most of this process will be conducted in English, we're inviting people from any Wikimedia wiki to submit proposals. We'll also invite volunteer translators to help translate proposals into English.

Your proposal should include: the problem that you want to solve, who would benefit, and a proposed solution, if you have one. You can submit your proposal on the Community Wishlist Survey page, using the entry field and the big blue button. We will be accepting proposals for 2 weeks, ending on November 23.

We're looking forward to hearing your ideas!

If you want to carefully review nearly a thousand applications in January, you might be a perfect committee member. Otherwise, you can volunteer as "ambassador": you will observe all the committee activities, ensure that people from your language or project manage to apply for a scholarship, translate scholarship applications written in your language to English and so on. Ambassadors are allowed to ask for a scholarship, unlike committee members.

As some of your might be aware, a small group of Wikimedia volunteers have proposed a banner campaign informing Wikipedia readers about the urgent situation of our fellow Wikipedian, open source software developer and Creative Commons activist, Bassel Khartabil. An exemplary banner and an explanatory page have now been prepared, and translated into about half a dozen languages by volunteer translators.

We are seeking your involvement to decide if the global Wikimedia community approves starting a banner campaign asking Wikipedia readers to call on the Syrian government to release Bassel from prison. We understand that a campaign like this would be unprecedented in Wikipedia's history, which is why we're seeking the widest possible consensus among the community.

Given Bassel's urgent situation and the resulting tight schedule, we ask everyone to get involved with the poll and the discussion to the widest possible extent, and to promote it among your communities as soon as possible.
