There are a lot of cool things to do in St. Louis, but avoid down town! We visited the city museum and the arch. After visiting the arch we went for dinner in the downtown area, where there was a gang related gun fight just a block away as we left the restaurant. Even though Hilton and other nicer hotel chains in the downtown area, it’s not nice other than the national park area! The rest outstay we stayed west of the city and visited the zoo and other attractions near there.

Popped in on our way back to our hotel from the Arch.
It is convenient to walk to if you are visiting the Arch. Self guided tour, stay as long or as little as you like.
When we went in (family of 6) the four people at the desk looked at us like we were from out of this world. Clearly we were there for the museum but to them apparently that was weird. Metal detectors/security check done we went in. The museum guide was sort of awkward; felt like this museum had never seen any visitors or something. But what was even more strange was that there were other people in the actual museum so clearly it was not odd that there were visitors coming to see the museum.
So for the museum itself, nice and clean; many different financial things to look at and learn from. We did not stay long, our kids were bored.

If you don't have your vax passport on you, just turn around, the heavily armed (unmasked) men will gladly show you the way. I guess that's all you get from a "free" museum. What are they hiding in there that they're keeping closed while the rest of the nation is open?

Ever wanted to hold a gold bar? Here, you can! Great interactive exhibits that explain our economy that people of all ages will like. Free and no reservations needed but you must show proof of vaccinations and have photo ID to pass through security to get in. Nice little gift shop at the end with a free bag of shredded money to take as a souvenir!

There is a very new museum that actually lets you go inside the Reserve. First let me say I think there should be an actual attraction listed for this museum but I'll place it here because I don't see one. In fact, the only way I knew there was something to visit was the sign outside the building.

The museum is obviously very new and you can tell when you first walk in. I believe you use the same entrance that employees use so there are guards and metal detectors. This can be intimidating, but the guards were very friendly and helpful. You can tell they are new to this though! I had a pocket knife which they let me check and pick up when my visit was over. Any bags and items must be scanned much like airline travel. You also need to provide a photo ID for any adults and minors must be accompanied. (No photos in this area...ask me how I know!) After a brief way you are paged through the next set of doors. You go to the right and up stairs (more signage would be helpful!) and are greeted by a very enthusiastic employee who ushered you in to a brief video outlining the museum. From there you enter the museum which is visited at your own pace.

The modern look of the exhibits are in start contrast to the old world architecture of the building, but everything is very tasteful. This is what I would call an educational museum outlining the function the Federal Reserve plays in our economy. There are various electronic games and informational stations which help you learn, if you choose to participate. There is also video playing every 10 minutes which is very interesting.

There is a gift shop on the way out (which was not completed at the time of my visit) and every visitor receives an interesting gift on the way out! You also get to see and take a photo with a cube that shows what $1 million dollars would look like.

Overall this is a stop that is worth making and will not take up a large chunk of your day.

I was really expecting the traditional "Money Museum" experience when going to this museum. I figured it was a great way to waste a half hour. I was shocked by this amazing museum. A half hour? You could easily enjoy spending hours in there. It was incredibly educational, but presented in a way that was fun and fantastically interactive. Don't let the museum's name fool you. Most people think of economics as "the dismal science". They have created a fun and visually stimulating way to present economics that will both appeal to children and adults alike. It is a "must see" when in Saint Louis. Bravo to the Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis, you have created a master piece. Best of all, it's free!

The displays at this museum seem to be geared toward school age children, but they are informative and so well done that my wife and I enjoyed them even without the kids. It took about half an hour to see the museum, and we got a free bag of shredded cash on the way out. We also had our picture made with a block containing 1 million dollar bills, which is as close to $1,000,000 as we may ever get.

If you do stop in, be sure to have your ID with you. My wife left hers in the car and they almost didn't let her in.

I admit that I was not sure about visiting the Economy Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank as there are plenty of other sights to see in St. Louis.

However, I am glad that we did. It has a great many interesting, interactive displays on the background to the Reserve and the value of the dollar compared with the earning potential of various jobs.

We even got given a bag of dollar bills (shredded) to take home as a souvenir.

This is one of the more interesting "free museums" I have been to. Emphasis on education so it's a great place to bring children. I would recommend it to anyone interested in knowing more about money and the economy.

I am fairly familiar with the Federal Reserve system and I really enjoyed this. But, if I weren't familiar, I would still have enjoyed it. There is much to learn and it barely scratches the surface of the inner workings of the Fed, so it's not too complicated. However, there is a good overview of how the economy works and the purpose of the Fed within that framework.Be prepared for bag screening, a metal detector and submitting your license. No big deal, and it's understandable that they would need to check you out a bit. The bathrooms are very clean and newer. The guard staff is friendly; don't expect a TSA type of screening.Around the corner is Monty's-a great sandwich and salad place to eat.
