A story about two half-sisters life in the eighteenth century Suriname. There is Lynda, a white colonial and slave owner, and her slave Mini-Mini's. While Lynda is slowly embittered by the hard life in the colony, Mini-Mini gets a chance at her own happiness. The question is, if she dares to seize that chance, as this happiness is at the expense of her mistress and half sister?

Only interesting for its depiction of slavery in 18th century Suriname and for the use of the Sranan language.
The rest nearly bored me to death with white people and their white problems. Their acting was unnatural at best and the Dutch they speak is too modern.

The Price of Sugar is a movie not often seen in Dutch cinema. It is based on the bestseller of the same name by Cynthia Mcleod. The book is a household name, especially in Suriname. The expectations were therefore already sky high.
Director Jean van de Velde wrote the screenplay himself. When converting the book to film, he had to leave out some of the plot, because the book has far too many storylines to cram into 1 movie. He chose to shift the focus from the white colonialists and Sarith in particular, to the slave Mini-Mini. This movie is her story.

Enige irritante aan de film was de Nederlands docent die me minstens 34 keer heeft verteld wat een tijdsversnelling was. (Dat personage die op Famke Louise lijkt mag opzich ook best dood)
Gezien in de Dutch Church in Londen op een evenement van de Ducth Society. Daarna een lezing van Michael van. Kempen over post-colonialisme en Suriname. Interessant.
