Defending CUNYAC Softball Champions Split Opening Day Of 2024 CUNYAC Championships

Brooklyn, NY - The defending CUNYAC Softball champions, the John Jay College Bloodhounds, commenced their title defense with an 11-0 triumph over the No. 4 seed Brooklyn but dropped the second game, 10-2, to the No. 2 seed Hunter.
 
With the loss, the Bloodhounds fall to 29-12, and will now face the No. 3 seed Baruch in an elimination game on Friday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m. 
 
No. 1 John Jay 11, No. 4 Brooklyn 0 | Five Innings
The Bloodhounds opened the championship by scoring six runs over the first two innings before capping the scoring with a five-spot in the bottom of the fourth as John Jay defeated Brooklyn, 11-0. 

Lindsay Ogden (13-4) allowed just two hits, and a walk, and struck out six in five innings in which she only needed 61 pitches. 
 
Five Bloodhounds had multi-hit games, as Elika Rodrigues led the way with three hits and scored thrice. Rylea Sandel added two hits and matched Rodrigues with three runs.
 
Jailene Santiago went 2 for 3 with a run scored and paced the Bloodhounds with three RBIs. Alyssa Cadolino and Angelina Schoelles also had two hits with Schoelles scoring a pair in the win. 
 
Brooklyn's starter Danielle Guzzardi (11-16) was tagged for all 11 runs on 13 hits while striking out two in four innings. 
 
Jelisa Palenque and Zoey Van Vleet each had a hit for the Bulldogs in the championship opener. 
 
Ogden struck out the side in the top of the first, needing just 15 pitches in getting three strikeouts. 

Rodrigues started the first with a single to right before Sandel singled to left, moving Rodrigues to second. 
 
On a 1-1 pitch, Santiago doubled to left field, scoring Rodrigues as John Jay struck for the first run of the contest. Sandel came into score on a wild pitch that made it 2-0. Sidney Bankston was hit by a pitch before Schoelles sent a deep shot to centerfield as Santiago tagged up and scored John Jay's third run of the contest. 
 
Ogden continued her strikeout streak, running it to five straight to open the contest before Van Vleet grounded out to second to end the Brooklyn second inning. 
 
Kelly Fajardo doubled to left to commence the second. With one out, Rodrigues sent a run-scoring single up the middle that extended John Jay's lead to 4-0. Rodrigues stole second and came around to score on the Sandel RBI triple to centerfield, which made it 5-0. Cadolino stepped in and doubled to left center, plating home Sandel as the Bloodhounds upped their lead to 6-0. 
 
Ogden continued her dominance inside the circle, using 11 pitches to retire the side in the top of the third. A relatively quiet bottom of the third yielded itself to the top of the fourth as Palenque broke up the no-hitter with an infield single. Melanie Millan lined into an inning-ending double play. 
 
John Jay scored five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Rodrigues continued her hot approach with an infield single to short. Sandel reached on the fielder's choice that moved Rodrigues to second. A wild pitch advanced both runners before Santiago cleared the bases with a single to center, increasing the lead to 8-0. 

Cadolino doubled to center field before coming home on the RBI single from Bankston, as John Jay led 9-0. 
 
Schoelles continued the hitting streak, posting the Bloodhounds' fourth straight hit in the inning, as scored brought in Cadolino as the defending champions led 10-0. Ciaran Iglesias came on as a pinch-hitter for Fajardo and grounded out to short, but Bankston came in to score the final run of the game for John Jay.
 
Dasha Goodman grounded short before issuing a walk to Rodriguez. Van Vleet singled as Brooklyn had runners on first and second. Isabelle Frank flew out for the second out before Cailyn Trousdale was plunked by a pitch to load the bases for Nadeen Khalil. Khalil fouled off the first two pitches and ended the game with a grounder to Sandel at short. 
 
No. 1 John Jay 2, No. 2 Hunter 10 | Five Innings
In game two of the first day of the CUNYAC Championships, the No. 2 seeded Hunter Hawks got off to a fast start and didn't look back, as the Bloodhounds dropped a 10-2 decision. 
 
Santiago (13-5) went 4.1 innings, giving up 10 runs (five earned) on 11 hits while striking out two and walking two. Ogden came on to work the final two-thirds of an inning, giving up a hit in the 15-pitch appearance. 
 
Rodrigues, Sandel, Cadolino, Schoelles, and Fajardo all had a hit as Rodrigues and Fajardo each recorded an RBI. 
 
T'ea Panagakso lasted just two innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits before giving way to Alyssa Curiale (4-7), who walked three and only allowed a hit in her three innings of work. 
 
Sophia Perez led the way for the Hawks, going 3 for 4 with three runs scored and adding two RBIs.  Paige Witalec went 2 for 3 with a team-high three RBIs. 
 
Olivia Palumbo led off the game with a single to center before Perez delivered an inside the park homerun to left field, giving Hunter the early 2-0 lead. Samantha Marsala reached on an error before coming home on the Witalec triple to left field. Adriana Ramirez sent an RBI single to short that scored the fourth run of the game. 
 
In the top of the second, Marsala flew out to left field, scoring Perez before Elizabeth Thompson followed her home, making it a 6-0 Hunter lead. 
 
The Bloodhounds chipped into deficit. Schoelles led off the second with a single up the middle. Kayla Sauers reached on an error by the left fielder as both runners moved into scoring position. The first pitch that Fajardo saw, she singled through the left side for the first run of the game for the Bloodhounds. Rodrigues flew out to centerfield as Sauers tagged up and scored, as John Jay trailed 6-2. 
 
The score remained that way until the top of the fourth when Witalec delivered a two-run double to left before Bowe tripled to right in making it a 9-2 advantage. In the top of the fifth, Hunter added to their lead with a Palumbo single up the middle as the Hawks upped their lead to 10-2. 
 
Santiago drew a walk but Curiale needed just one pitch to retire the final three batters of the contest.
