Bobby Darin: Four Classic Albums (Avid AMSC 1205) highlights a singer who was something of a chameleon. All four albums date from the early sixties, and on “Love Swings” and “Oh! Look at Me Now” he was in Great American Songbook mode. Billy May orchestrated and accompanied the latter, and officiated also on “Two of a Kind” which paired Darin with Johnny Mercer having fun on some old Tin Pan Alley songs. Finally, “The Bobby Darin Story” was a compilation of Bobby’s hits from between 1959 and 1961, with a linking commentary by the man himself. .
Four terrific original album releases in one! so much variety & Bobby Darin's voice is beautiful, melodic & unique there isn't anything I can add but I am like a lot of customers who like their music on CD & not compressed downloaded onto either my mac or my iPod - to hear the full range on my stereo system is to almost be 'there' in the studio & some singers & musicians do literally sound as if they are breathing through the speakers not going to compare or contrast Mr Darin to anyone he is so very uniquely his own talent the title of the set is Four Classic Albums & that is exactly what you get with this collection on 2 CDs. The original releases were 1961 & 1962 there's a nice little 4 page booklet with all the original album notes printed so no retrospective here so what you get is what you would have bought in the '60s - terrific sound quality yet no remastering a lovely set & all in one place these original series re-releases are great value
Mr Darin had a fair bit of musical success, especially late 50's/ early 60's. He is a bit strange, musically. He wrote rock & roll, but liked to record 1920's types of songs. Often, Al Jolson tunes. These were a bit out of place, for a sixties musical genre.. Some is great, like "Beyond the Sea", others grate. You'd need eclectic tastes to truly enjoy all the songs. Darin came up with some true gems, so don't condemn immediately!
