*This* one is the set to buy of all the compilations out there. It features a really nice, concise cross-section of the various genres Mr. Barry specialized in - not focusing too heavily on any one in particular. It works as a set, if either played in order or on "random". Worth seeking out over some of the other hits packages out there.
I got this for his version of Walk Don't Run to head my own CD of pre-Beatles instrumentals. I didn't expect to still be owning this and to be playing it once a week. John Barry's recording heyday was 1959-60, when the John Barry Seven were right where it was at, cats and kittens, the beatnik days when rock gave way to trad jazz for cool people at the cutting edge. Parts of this compo illustrate just how well Barry melded these 2 styles into an original sound. Other parts ie cover versions like Volare and Blueberry Hill show the orchestral side that was developing behind the small group in the recording studios. If we'd had shopping malls & centres in 1960(and believe me, we DIDN'T!), these cuts of choice Barry would have been playing virtually continually. Yet another style is the film theme-whether recorded by him(the James Bond Theme), or written by him(Magnificent 7,Goldfinger etc.). Other compos concentrate on this almost exclusively, but here it's kept to sensible limits AND Miss Shirley Bassey belts out 3 bonus vocals! Well, we may have left beatniks far behindsville, Daddio, as they would have said, but this album is a cracking tribute to those times and to a pretty talented guy-hard to believe he's 72 now!
I like this particular CD because The Persuaders and The Adventure TV Themes are excluded on it. This CD covers some of The James Bond Films and Shirley Bassey which interest me along with other good TV Themes of John Barry.
