Team France (フランス代表 Furansu Daihyō) is a team of Medafighters and their Medabots that is representing France in the World Robattle Cup in the Medabots anime. Team France is formed by three cheaters known as the Beret brothers (ルパン三兄弟 Rupan Sankyōdai, the "three Lupin brothers" in Japanese), masters of disguise that trick their opponents and steal the Medals from their Medabots to make them unable to Robattle before their matches, always winning by default. They are skilled to the point of somehow being able to disguise themselves as persons smaller than them, like Ikki and Koji, their bodies making cracking noises when they removed their disguises.

Team France appeared in the episode The French Deception as Team Japan's second opponent in the tournament, where they almost succeed in making Team Japan lose with their tricks, but with the help from the Phantom Renegade, Team Japan was able to expose Team France and recover the Medals that Team France had stolen. As they resort to tricks to win, Metabee says that they must be very lousy Medafighters, and he easily defeats them with the Medaforce. Due to their actions, the three Beret brothers were permanently banned from participating in official matches from the World Medabot Federation.

After being banned, Jean-Luc disguised as Ikki again and tried to convince Metabee to forgive the Beret brothers and help lift their ban, but Metabee found this far-fetched and realized that he was not Ikki.

Before the match against Team Japan, he disguised as a guard to spy the team to discover who is Space Medafighter X. He was captured by the Phantom Renegade, who disguised himself as Jean-Guy to recover Team Japan's stolen Medals, returning them in the arena. Etymology[]

  • The three Lupin brothers are based on Arsène Lupin (アルセーヌ・ルパン Arusēnu Rupan), a fictional gentleman thief and master of disguise created in 1905 by French writer Maurice Leblanc. Aresūru's name is similar to Arsène in Japanese, but with two vowels switched and one letter replaced.
    • The three Lupin brothers may also be based on the series Lupin the Third, as the team's Medabots resemble the main characters Lupin III (descendant of Lupin, Monoklar's motif), Goemon Ishikawa XIII (descendant of Goemon, Kamafive's motif) and Daisuke Jigen (who mainly uses a revolver, Wildfire's motif).
  • The first half of their names may come from the Japanese words are (あれ, "huh?"), kore (これ, "this!") and nani (なに, "what!?").
  • The second half of their names, sūru, may be a transcription of the French words sieur (sir) or soule (intoxicated, drunk). It is also similar to 掏る (suru), Japanese for pickpocketing.
  • Jean is a common French male given name equivalent to the English John. Luc, Paul, and Guy are also given names, with Luc being the equivalent of the English Luke.
  • A beret is a soft, round, flat-crowned cap that started being mass produced in Spain and France in the 19th century. In the English dub, the narrator jokingly asks if the Beret brothers will ever actually wear berets in the end of the episode.

Notes[]

  1. Only Aresūru was listed in the staff roll. His brothers appear to be voiced by Satoshi Tsuruoka (Sumilidon) and Eiji Takemoto (Koji's steward).
