Bad Boys 4 First Reactions Are In

Summary

  • Martin Lawrence is open to Bad Boys 5 and beyond as long as Will Smith returns alongside him.
  • Whether the franchise continues likely depends on how well the latest sequel performs this summer.
  • Bad Boys For Life's success suggests there's still audience interest in the franchise.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die star Martin Lawrence comments on the possibility of a Bad Boys 5 and beyond. After first playing Marcus Burnett back in 1995, Lawrence most recently returned as the character in 2020's Bad Boys For Life. Now, Lawrence and costar Will Smith, who plays Mike Lowrey, are set to appear in an upcoming fourth film from returning directors Adil el Arbi and Bilall Fallah. There's been no confirmation, however, about whether the new movie will be the last one.

Ahead of the Bad Boys: Ride or Die release date, Lawrence addresses his franchise future during a recent interview with Empire Magazine. While it doesn't sound like there are any firm plans in place for a Bad Boys 5 just yet, the actor makes clear that he's interested in returning to the franchise for as long as Smith is. Check out his comment and a new image from Bad Boys: Ride or Die below:

“I’m going to carry on as long as my brother carries on. It’ll be very hard to get rid of me.”

How Likely Is Bad Boys 5?

It Will All Depend On Bad Boys: Ride Or Die

While interest from a key Bad Boys cast member is a positive sign, the key determining factor regarding whether a fifth movie happens will be how well the latest sequel performs at the box office. 2020's Bad Boys For Life was seemingly designed to serve as a potential franchise finale, and the trailer for that film even featured Mike and Marcus saying of their mission: "One last time." The film, however, was a critical and commercial success, earning just over $426 million at the box office.

6 Most Exciting Things To Expect From Bad Boys 4

As the fourth installment of the Bad Boys franchise draws closer, there are many characters, plot points, and revelations that fans should expect.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die hasn't featured any indications in the marketing to suggest that it's the last one, and the success of the previous installment probably means the film will leave the door open for a new story. It's not clear what the new movie's budget is, but Bad Boys For Life cost about $90 million. It's likely that the new sequel has a similar budget, meaning it will need to make over about $200 million to be considered a hit.

The Bad Boys For Life reviews were some of the most positive ones yet for the franchise, and strong audience word-of-mouth was surely a factor in the film's success. If the reception to the new movie is just as positive, it will definitely be better positioned to reach those same heights. It remains to be seen whether Bad Boys 5 eventually gets the green light, but Lawrence is evidently open to returning as Marcus for as long as there's interest.
