Thora Parker (Thora Hird) was the landlady of a North Country boarding house that predominantly catered for showbiz types.
She oversaw the comings and goings of her boarders while caring for her two children, Alan (Leslie Meadows) and Vera (Caroline Dowdeswell) as well as her mother (May Warden).
Some of her regulars included Alf Whittle (Harry Littlewood), who remained for both series; Miss Lottie Bottomley (Damaris Hayman), a secondary school teacher who moved in during the first episode of the second series and stayed for the remaining seven, and Dudley Banks-Smith (Ray Fell), a retired male ballet dancer who managed the town’s nightspot, the Celebration Club.
Meanwhile, her neighbour, Elsie Crabtree (Ruth Holden), frequently popped in to beg or borrow anything that wasn’t nailed down.
