Windows store Calculator crashes - Microsoft Community

Windows store Calculator crashes

When launching calc the windows store calls calculator.exe from the "C:\Program Files\Windowsapps\Microsoft.WindowsCalculator_10.1811.3241.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe" directory but the application crashes with the following exception and faulting module:

Exception code: 0xc000027b

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\Windows.UI.Xaml.dll

This behavior does not occur for all windows store apps (photos works) but it crashes both the Calculator HD app and the regular calculator app.  sfc /scannow finds nothing - DISM /restorehealth also does nothing.  I've updated windows to 1809 and there are no further updates available.  I've updated video card drivers to the latest versions.  I've tried reducing the display resolution.  I've tried reseting the calculator application.  I've tried powershelling the app off and reinstalling it.  I've tried re-registering the application from powershell - nothing works!  I've used wsreset.exe and it doesn't work.  I've used wscollect.exe and have a .cab but no where to send it to.

Help!

Hi Keith

Sorry the inconvenience this is causing.

download the following utility and use it to remove Calculator completely:

https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/scriptcen...

After downloading, extract it, launch it, scroll through the list, select Calculator then click Remove.

Proceed to redownload Calculator from the Store:

The application did not work.  As previously stated, I've already performed a remove-appxpackage on all calculator packages.  After reinstalling the calculator it launches the splash screen when using calc.exe and then immediately crashes when trying to launch calculator.exe in the windowsapps directory.

Hi Keith

I am trying to help you, but if you mark my replies as unhelpful, it makes it even more difficult to do so. Others will also be less willing to help you with your problem too.

Since the steps I gave you were unsuccessful and you have exhausted other avenues yourself, your next best option is to perform a repair upgrade. A repair upgrade reinstalls Windows while keeping your apps and files.

OS repairs through the troubleshooting feature do not solve the problem - they only re-apply defaults and require you to reinstall everything.  They are time-consuming and shouldn't have an affect on something so simple as the calculator.  This is the Microsoft Store's fault - it used to be calc.exe was the application - but not anymore! Now it calls other executables that don't function correctly because you no longer have control out of the box over your file permissions; functionality within the registry has also been limited.  I think the professionals know why and it boils down to greed.

Microsoft will just tell you to system restore / troubleshoot reset your pc.  If you sign out, then hold left shift, click the power button and while still holding left shift click restart - it will then present options to enter troubleshooting where you can reset or restore your system to an earlier date.  If you have bitlocker, you'll need to get your recovery key ready.  I was unable to find a viable solution.  Calc.exe calls Calculator.exe - I tried running the windbg to capture exactly what was happening and was unable to find any reason as to why Calculator wouldn't run but I suspect it has to do with system permissions.  Windows X permissions can be very weird - it would probably be handy if Microsoft released an app to reset the windows store permissions in the registry and files;  you can use icacls to reset permissions back to their original config from the command prompt in the troubleshooting section but it didn't work for me either. I know it was registry related because I could run the application under an account that was originally created but not under any freshly created account; I think registry permissions may have been hosed in HKLM.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but I use a pocket calculator. It never gives me bizarre error codes. It just works. If I happen to be away from my calculator and need to do arithmetic, I do it in my web browser's address box. Or on my phone.

As you can probably tell, I don't participate in Directly's silly ratings game so my feelings aren't hurt if you don't like my answer.  😉

A pocket calculator!?  What a terrific substitute for the Windows Calculator that used to be just calc.exe.  I bet it doesn't have the same 0xc000027b exception in the Windows.UI.Xaml.dll like countless other apps do !
