“Wildly entertaining.”—New York Times Book Review

From the bestselling and award-winning author comes a wickedly clever and fast-paced novel of greed, revenge, obsession—and quite possibly the perfect murder.

Simon and Vicky couldn’t
seem more normal: a wealthy Chicago couple, he a respected law professor, she an advocate for domestic violence victims. A stable, if unexciting marriage. But one thing’s for sure: absolutely nothing is what it seems. The pair are far from normal, and one of them just may be a killer.

When the body of a beautiful socialite is found hanging in a mansion in a nearby suburb, Simon and Vicky’s secrets begin to unravel. A secret whirlwind affair. A twenty-million-dollar trust fund about to come due. A decades-long grudge and obsession with revenge. These are just a few of the lies that make up the complex web... and they will have devastating consequences. And while both Vicky and Simon are liars, just who exactly is conning who? Part
Gone Girl and part Strangers on a Train, Look Closer is a wild rollercoaster of a read that will have you questioning everything you think you know.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The fun is figuring out what parts of the story — if any — should be trusted. Though Ellis juggles a great many plot strands, he doesn’t drop them; the result is wildly entertaining, not tedious. It helps that just about every character in the book is the very definition of unreliable."--TheNew York Times Book Review

One of the books on Patrick Stewart's nightstand, according to The New York Times

“Suspenseful, sexy, involving, twisty and twisted.”—
James Patterson

“A dizzyingly clever thriller. Endlessly surprising and great fun.”—
Lisa Scottoline

"A tense, tricky thriller that keeps surprising you just when you think you have it figured out. A fun fast read.
"--R.L. Stine

"Impressive...The tale of murder and misdirection is a solid two days of beach escape."--
Chicago Tribune

"With labyrinthine plots that spin on twist after twist and several never-saw-that-coming turns….Ellis juggles romantic triangles, betrayal after betrayal, revenge and greed for a complex plot that evolves into one solid twist after another. Each character’s shady past and their unshakeable present merge into an exciting plot"--
Florida Sun Sentinel

“Serpentine revelations will surprise even the cleverest mystery readers. This complex tale of triple-crossings and devious revenge should win Ellis new fans.”--
Publishers Weekly

“Twisty, intricately plotted….Even seasoned mystery readers won’t be able to predict all the knots in Simon and Vicky’s tangled web of deception. A roller-coaster ride full of unexpected twists and turns.”--
Kirkus Reviews

"Completely blown away by how smart, sneaky and surprisingly heartfelt this novel is!...Highly recommended."--
Criminal Element

“A daring, brilliant thriller, full of characters you both love and hate and more unexpected turns than a mountain road at night without your headlights. Tremendous fun!”--
Scott Turow, bestselling author of Presumed Innocent and The Last Trial

"Absolutely dazzling! David Ellis is a master storyteller who keeps us riveted to the pages. A whip-smart and diabolically plotted thriller,  with crackling dialogue, nonstop pacing, and tour de force structure. A profoundly insightful study of greed, obsession, revenge, and justice. Riveting, compelling, and completely entertaining!"--Hank Phillippi Ryan, bestselling author of Her Perfect Life

Just a lot of nasty language that I had to blot out.. otherwise a very good plot! Very good characters and character build up. I really liked the storyline, couldn’t put the book down. My first thriller by this author and I may read another if I can get past all the extra. Triggers: Guns, murder, cheating. Ellis really made this story come alive and it was very believable with his lawyer & judge background.

This book had lots of clever plot twists and turns, kept me engaged until the end. Very very well written!

Author David Ellis loves his twists and turns. This book starts with a deliberately slow and steady build, a ragged story line with dark characters. The chapters are delivered in first-person and rotate through the cast, all of the pieces have just bits of a connection. It was a tough start, I was looking for someone, something to like. Then, about a third of the way through, the sneaky narrative takes hold. At the halfway point I couldn’t put the book down. The disparate threads circle tighter and tighter and the plot becomes an intricate web that’s so creative and so satisfying. I left the book with a sly smile and a “well done”.

Loved this book so much!! Witty, funny, so well written and FILLED with twists. I never saw anything coming! I usually give my 5 stars to books that I have an emotional connection with. I did not with this book but the way it was written and how it kept me on my toes led to my rating.

Great story towards the end; dragged in the middle. Enjoyed the writing style of switching between characters point of view

“Look Closer” by David Ellis. First book I’ve read by this author and I’m blown away by the plot and the writing style. This is a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing from start to finish. Told from different points of view but easy to keep track of, it felt like multiple trains all traveling toward the same point and destined to collide at the same time. I loved it and it gets 5/5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me!

Look Closer by David Ellis

This could easily be the most complicated crime novel I’ve ever read and yet I was never confused. A testament to the author’s superior writing craft/skill. The story is in four points of view all of them first person present. This book is another solid five. I was truly amazed at the story and character development that carried me right along. When I put the book down, I found myself thinking about what might happen next. An author can’t ask for more out of a book. I quit counting the number of twists. Which also took me right to the edge of thinking there may have been one too many... but stopped short just in time. Another sign of a brilliant craftsman at work.
What makes the story work is the attention to detail without it, the complicated plot would easily fail falling into a mish-mash of olio.
There is a thing in writing called MAR, motivation, action, reaction. Something has to be motivated in the proper way or the action and reaction can fall short and or turn into melodrama. The author here walks a very fine line. In order to make such a complicated story work the two protagonists have to step dangerously close to the line without crossing over into being unredeemable characters. It works well here but that line is clearly visible. The motivation for what ultimately happens is thin in places. There is also a huge Point of View cheat which is not uncommon in thrillers and mysteries. When a reader picks up a book there has to be a certain amount of suspension of disbelief. The difficulty in writing one of these is saving up this suspension of disbelief and only using when absolutely necessary. That’s what happens here, the author needed it to facilitate the story so for me it worked very well. Loved it. But I know some readers who might throw the book across the room.
Easily a five-star review and this author goes on my hardcover list where I buy the hardcover as soon as it comes out. I highly recommend.

•Short chapters (we all know what a sucker I am for short chapters!)
•Definitely a popcorn thriller!
•Nothing super dark (to me) but definitely kept me reading and wanting more
•This was a fun, twisty, suspenseful thriller, a page-turner
•It's long and there's alot going on, but I was never bored, and it was a good story. Not one I've read before. So major props there.
•It as a complicated game of cat and mouse. It is filled with twist after twist after twist.
•Some authors would have made a ridiculous mess of this story but David turned it into a tightly wound, well-plotted, cleaver thriller.
•I am very hard on thrillers and this one surprised me
•It's told through multiple POV and dual timelines. There's also journal entries thrown in. Definitely keeps it fresh, interesting, engaging, and fast paced.
•Even when I tried to predict what was going to happen or guess the killer, the characters were always two steps ahead of me. I loved this aspect of the book.

Last but not least, right from the start Simon says he's never listened to Panic! At The Disco and never will. I honestly should have closed the book than. No one. And I mean no one hates on my Brendon Urie. Those are fighting words. But I guess I'll let it go this once, since the book was a fantastic read!

If you want a fast paced fun thriller, I highly recommend this one.

This has been on my shelf for a while now, despite it being one of my most anticipated reads last year.

Well, let me tell you the hype is real.
This was a brilliantly executed psychological thriller. The plot, characters and overall pace of the story was just perfect. This is going on my list of top 10 best thrillers ever.
Mr Ellis certainly pulled the wool over my eyes! I kept thinking I knew where this was heading, but boy was I wrong! The author does a great job at throwing curveballs at the reader until you won’t know what to believe anymore. The easiest 5 stars ever!

A very clever plot full of surprises, so cleverly put together it will have you guessing to the end. Sex, lies, and the ultimate sting. Delicious.

A great ride. I really enjoyed it.
