Tirdad Derakhshani Philadelphia Inquirer South of the Hell should give horror junkies enough of a tickle to stave off withdrawal. But it lacks substance. It's an intermezzo, not a full course. Nov 30, 2015 Full Review Dan Fienberg Hollywood Reporter It isn't scary. It looks comically cheap at times. The performances range from inconsistent to fairly awful. And unless the Emmys open up a category for Outstanding Use of Multi-Colored Contact Lenses, it's unlikely to get any real respect. Nov 30, 2015 Full Review Emily L. Stephens AV Club After one episode, South Of Hell already feels like an everlasting slog. Rated: D+ Nov 30, 2015 Full Review Isaac Feldberg We Got This Covered South of Hell should elicit more derisive hoots of laughter than shrieks of terror - that is to say, you'll snort a handful at times at the stupidity of the writing, but it's near guaranteed you'll jump not once. Rated: 1/5 Oct 11, 2018 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Post-Gazette The only truly scary thing about South of Hell is the possibility that someone might waste seven hours watching it Friday night into Saturday morning. Ashley P I think it’s pretty entertaining if you’re into fantasy. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/25/24 Full Review William M What happened here? Eli Roth? Mena Suvari? Who lost a bet or owed a favor? This is supernatural TV done wrong. This incredibly poor show is why fantasy, supernatural, and other similar genres don't get made for regular TV; it's just tripe. The production quality is incredibly low budget. The acting and direction are horrific, stilted and flat line delivery, just straight beginner directing. I can't decide if it's the writing, acting, direction, or just overall production quality that is the worst. The only think redeemable is the story concept. Noting about the implementation of this project hit the mark. All the actors are wooden and fail to even attempt to rise above the material, and don't seem to know how to act with SFX. The camera work, angles of shots, lighting, set design, physical placement of actors, background, lack of extras, are all just bad. I've honestly seen better student films... from high schoolers! I have to assume Eli and Mena got the lion's share of the budget for their salaries and there was nothing left for taking the time to make the quality even remotely decent. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Toms c This a low production but if that doesn't bother you, then everything else is awesome. Meena Suvari, is amazing and Abigail, is a character I would loved to have seen many more seasons of. I'm really gutted this was developed further. Not everyone but definitely for me :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/13/24 Full Review Media B Great actors, not so great... something? Production value? Scriptwriting? Pacing? I'm sticking around to see where it goes though. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/17/23 Full Review Audience Member Trust its not top notch. The actors really try and work the material. It has a great plot. I'm a horror-whore so I see where it's trying to go. That show just needed better production and writing. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Some clumsy action scenes and even worse eye effects. The feel of it is just wrong. The first episode was directed by Eli Roth. Really? Are there two Eli Roths out there? I am beginning to prefer there were none. Let us continue the name and blame: Mena Suvari - come on down! The actors in Grimm, The Leftovers, the somewhat similar Outcast - they convey belief in the supernatural world they live in. Suvari does not. The shows mentioned can sometimes be a little dour, and South of Hell certainly got that right. Already warned, I jumped ship after two episodes. Felt like twenty.
