A man was fatally stabbed Saturday evening near Audi Field in Southwest Washington about an hour before a scheduled soccer match, according to the D.C. police.

The victim, identified as Martin Gross Jr., 41, of Northwest, was found around 6:30 p.m. after officers went to the 100 block of T Street SW, where a stabbing was reported, said Tom Lynch, a police spokesman. The site is near the southern edge of the stadium.

A game between D.C. United and the Seattle Sounders, two professional soccer teams, was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m., about an hour after the victim was found.

It was not immediately clear Saturday night whether any connection existed between the stabbing and the game. The team described the stabbing as an isolated incident.

Gross was stabbed at least twice. After being found, he was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Police said they detained a person near the scene and later arrested him. Authorities said Wali Shabazz, 49, of Southwest, was charged with second-degree murder while armed. He could make an initial appearance in D.C. Superior Court on Monday.

Police said in a statement that detectives’ believe the victim and suspect knew each other and that the stabbing was the result of a workplace dispute. Police did not identify the workplace.

D.C. United said on Twitter that the organization was aware “of an incident outside” Audi Field.

The team said police “contained the situation” and that there was no ongoing threat to the public.
