Goldmine's four star review of 'In Concert', written by Joseph Tortelli - you can read the review here (quoted from www.goldminemag.com) or check out the original at Goldmine and explore for other reviews and much more... Goldmine In Concert will be savored by Gene Clark fans, who appreciate his redolent songwriting and expressive singing. The two-CD set begins with seven previously unreleased tracks recorded in 1988 for the radio program The Mountain Stage. Accompanying himself on guitar, Clark opens with the spare 'Silver Raven', conveying a stark intensity only suggested by the highly produced original from 1974's 'No Other' album. Dipping back into his 1967 solo debut, he follows with 'Tried So Hard', then adds harmonica to the troubadour ballad 'My Marie'. Moving from folk to country, Clark is joined by a house band with mandolin and fiddle players for 'Train Leaves Here This Morning' from his innovative Dillard-Clark country-rock period. Besides the seven-song solo radio concert, the 26-track album features duets with Textones vocalist-guitarist Carla Olson. Three tunes were taped in 1989 during an impromptu home practice session and included Olsons moving 'Number One Is To Survive'. Sixteen numbers come from a 77-minute acoustic concert recorded in 1990; issued elsewhere under the title 'Silhouetted In Light', this Clark-Olson performance makes its domestic debut here. Taking material from their influential rootsy album 'So Rebellious A Lover', the duo deliver such songs as 'Del Gato' and 'Gypsy Rider', along with the beautiful ballad 'Your Fire Burning', intended for their never-completed follow-up. For Byrds fans, Clark serves up spare versions of 'Set You Free This Time', 'I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better' and 'She Don't Care About Time', slowing the tempo and deepening the effect of this magnificent composition. Concentrating on Clark as a folk and country-rock stylist, In Concert is accompanied by an eight-page booklet with liner notes by John Einarson, who wrote the outstanding biography titled 'Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life And Legacy Of The Byrds Gene Clark'.
