Over the last few years, Guy Ritchie has established himself as one of the most prolific filmmakers working in Hollywood. Since 2019, the director has released six feature films, all of which he both wrote and directed. His latest, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, stars Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson, Eiza Gonzalez, Henry Golding and Cary Elwes, and just opened in theaters in mid-April this year. On top of that, he currently has one film (In the Grey) in post-production and set to release next year, and he is currently in the midst of filming another (Fountain of Youth).

Ritchie first made a name for himself in the late ‘90s and early 2000s with films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. He then gained a whole new level of mainstream attention when he took on the new blockbuster adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, in the late 2000s.

Since then, his filmography has been a wide array of mid-budget spy capers like 2015’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., smaller passion projects like 2019’s The Gentlemen and major studio productions like the live-action adaptation of Aladdin, also from 2019.

This scattershot approach has made Ritchie a lot of fans over the years, though his films have also landed all along the spectrum from failure to success at the box office. With his newest movie in theaters now, we’ve decided to take a look back at Ritchie’s career and highlight the eight movies that have fared the best at the global box office.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has been excluded from this list simply because its box office story has yet to be completely written, though there is a fair chance that it will land somewhere here when all is said and done. With that said, here are the eight highest-grossing films from Guy Ritchie’s career:

After the success of Ritchie’s debut, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, in 1998, the director was quick to build on that success with his follow-up, Snatch, in 2000. His second film, which saw Matthew Vaughn returning as producer, brought back key cast members such as Jason Statham and Vinnie Jones, while also introducing new performers into Ritchie’s circle, such as Benicio del Toro and Brad Pitt. Snatch was another English crime film, though this story was split into two defined plots that intertwined with one another.

Building on the Success of Ritchie’s Debut

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels had done pretty well upon its release. Though it never received a wide release, it did drum up plenty of conversation in the UK film industry, and it even secured a couple of BAFTA nominations. With Snatch, Ritchie was able to build on that positivity and even secure a bigger release in the US through Sony Pictures. Here in North America, Snatch ultimately grossed $30 million, more than Lock, Stock had made in its entire global run.

Most of Snatch’s box office totals came from international markets though, as the film made $53 million overseas, with $15 million coming from the UK alone. With a production budget of just $10 million, the global total of $83 million was considered a great success, and it was an early glimpse at Ritchie’s potential at the box office. Jumping from one of Ritchie’s first films to one of his most recent, 2021’s Wrath of Man saw Ritchie re-teaming with his frequent collaborator, Jason Statham. Together, the two delivered an R-rated actioner loosely based on a French film from 2004 titled Cash Truck. This was the first time that Ritchie and Statham had worked together in over 15 years, and the result was a fairly straightforward crowd-pleaser that was exactly what theaters and audiences needed after the pandemic shut everything down in 2020.

A Much-Needed Win in the Pandemic Era

Wrath of Man was Ritchie’s first film to release after the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic that kicked off in early 2020. The movie was originally set to release in January 2021, though its release was delayed by a few months because of the pandemic. When it ultimately opened in April 2021 internationally and in early May in the United States, the film was a decent box office success, but it was a big win considering the context of the time. Theaters were just beginning to reopen, and blockbusters like Godzilla vs Kong and Mortal Kombat were finding modest success as well.

In this environment, Wrath of Man carved out some space for itself, grossing $27 million in North America and a whopping $76 million overseas. A key part of that success was the film securing a release in China, which contributed just over $25 million to its box office. With a budget of $40 million, Wrath of Man’s global box office total of $103 million was a much-needed win, especially early in the pandemic. Rent on Apple TV.

After his two Sherlock Holmes films, there was a lot of curiosity about where Ritchie would go next with his career. Would he continue to work in the blockbuster movie space? Or would he attempt to return to his roots with smaller-budget crime films? 2015’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. lies somewhere in the middle.

The movie is a throwback ‘60s spy film, based on the TV series of the same name, which ran from 1964 to 1968. The general concept centers on two spies, one American and one Russian, who are forced into an unlikely partnership in order to stop a larger threat to them both.

Betting on Two of the 2010s Biggest Rising Stars

As is the case with most of Ritchie’s movies, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. sports an impressive cast, with the supporting roles filled by actors such as Jared Harris, Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki and Hugh Grant. However, much of the conversation around the film centered on its two leads: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. Both actors were at career heights in the mid-2010s, with them each poised to potentially become big stars, Cavill due to his role as Superman and Hammer off the strength of his performance in The Social Network.

While neither really became the major stars they could’ve been (both for very different reasons), The Man From U.N.C.L.E. remains an interesting point in their (and Ritchie's) respective careers.

Although it is above two other films on this list, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is generally considered to be a box office disappointment. On a budget of $75 million, the movie only grossed a global total of $108 million. While the film certainly has its fans, the general reaction from critics and audiences was less than stellar. The movie failed to connect, pulling in just $45 million domestically and $63 million overseas. Rent on Apple TV.

The next film on this list is one that has unexpectedly become a modern staple of Ritchie’s career. The Gentlemen was released in January 2020, a few months before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Hollywood and the rest of the world. After a string of big-budget blockbusters like 2019’s Aladdin, The Gentlemen was largely seen as a return to form for Ritchie.

It was a much smaller film that told a complex story about the criminal underground in the U.K. With an incredible cast consisting of Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Colin Farrell, Hugh Grant, Henry Golding and Jeremy Strong, the film was able to drum up a lot of interest upon its release and become a good success for Ritchie.

The Gentlemen’s Ongoing Success

Although The Gentlemen grossed only $5 million more than The Man From U.N.C.L.E., with its global total landing at $113 million – $36 million coming from North America and $76 million from overseas –, the film’s much smaller $22 million production budget made it a very strong performance relative to its size. It received decently strong reviews upon its release, but its real legacy has since come through its expansion into television.

Just this year, Netflix released a spin-off series (also titled The Gentlemen) starring Theo James, Giancarlo Esposito, Vinnie Jones and Ray Winstone, which has turned into a surprise hit for the streamer. While no season two announcement has come yet, it’s hard to imagine Netflix isn’t eager to continue the series. Rent on Apple TV.

After the disappointing performance of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. followed his Sherlock Holmes films, Ritchie stepped back into the realm of big-budget with 2017’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. The film starred Charlie Hunnam as the titular king, and it was intended to be the first chapter in an extensive six-film franchise. With a supporting cast that included Djimon Hounsou, Jude Law, Eric Bana, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, Aidan Gillen and Kingsley Ben-Adir (a few years before he became a star in the early 2020s).

Ritchie’s Return to Blockbusters Misfired

Although there were lots of conversation surrounding King Arthur: Legend of the Sword before its release, primarily centered around Ritchie’s ambition to make it a major franchise, the film crashed and burned pretty intensely at the box office. It opened to just $15 million in North America, where it topped out at just $39 million.

While it performed stronger overseas with a $100 million haul, its global total of $139 million was still far from where it needed to be. That’s because the film was produced on an astronomical $175 million production budget. This easily made Ritchie’s King Arthur one of the biggest box office disasters of 2017, with it estimated to have lost WB over $150 million after advertising. Rent on Apple TV.

Clearly, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes mysteries are some of the most famous mystery literature of all time, and with that there have been countless adaptations on both film and television. However, Ritchie’s take on Sherlock Holmes is something that is uniquely his own.

With Robert Downey Jr. cast in the lead role, Jude Law playing his partner Dr. John Watson and a broader supporting cast that includes Rachel McAdams and Mark Strong, Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie from 2009 brought a new energy to Doyle’s classic stories and introduced the character to a new generation of fans.

One of the Late 2000s Defining Blockbusters

While 2009’s Sherlock Holmes may not have broken many box office records, it still connected with audiences on a broad scale. A lot of praise was directed toward Ritchie’s directorial style, and it continued to cement Downey Jr.’s comeback after Iron Man debuted the year prior. Domestically, Sherlock Holmes grossed $62 million in its opening weekend and went on to total $209 million in North America.

Overseas, it added another $289 million, bringing its global total to just under $500 million, though some sources state that it was as high as $520 million. This landed the movie as the eighth-highest grossing movie of 2009. With a budget of $90 million, this was a strong success for everyone involved. Stream on AppleTV+.

Only a couple of years after Sherlock Holmes hit theaters in 2009, Ritchie was already back with a sequel in 2011, titled Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The sequel introduced the iconic Holmes villain, Professor Moriarty, played by Jared Harris, who gives an outstanding performance in the role. Despite this, the reaction to the second Sherlock Holmes movie wasn’t nearly as positive as it had been for the first, which muddied the waters of its success more than a bit.

The Complicated Success of the Sequel

Although the reception to the sequel from critics and audiences wasn’t the best, the good will generated by the first Sherlock Holmes film was powerful enough to drive A Game of Shadows to greater heights at the box office. At least, it was internationally. Overseas, the second film grossed $348 million, over $60 million more than its predecessor.

Unfortunately, the North American box office dipped a bit. After opening with just $39 million, A Game of Shadows totaled $186 million domestically. With a global total of $535 million, the sequel brought a larger gross than the original by about $35 million. Unfortunately, the film’s budget had grown by about the same amount, from $90 million to $125 million. The negative reviews and the lack of significant growth from one film to the next hurt the film’s legacy and shrunk the chances of a third film being developed anytime soon. Rent on Apple TV.

Finally, the last film on this list is an anomaly in more ways than one. Not only is 2019’s Aladdin the highest-grossing movie of Ritchie’s career, it earned that title by a wide margin of $500 million. This is the only film of Ritchie’s that has pulled in more than $1 billion at the box office, as all of his others have failed to come remotely close. This also marks the only time that Ritchie has ever worked with Disney.

The director was seen as a strange choice to helm the live-action reimagining of the Mouse House’s 1992 animated classic, Aladdin, but the director brought a new energy to the film that differentiated it from the original while still maintaining the spirit of the story.

Ritchie’s Successful Collaboration with Disney

2019 was the peak of Disney’s lengthy endeavor of remaking its animated films in live action. It was one of five such films produced that year, with the others being Dumbo, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Ritchie’s new take on Aladdin was an incredible success, pulling in $355 million domestically and $691 million overseas.

With a total of $1.046 billion, that made Aladdin one of the highest-grossing movies of the summer and 2019 as a whole. That’s even more impressive considering the immense competition from films like Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4 and The Lion King sharing the same release window. Stream on Disney+.
