Picture postcard setting in its extensive grounds in an affluent rural area on the borders of West Sussex and Surrey, the original bar area is pleasant rustic and the restaurant behind a welcoming room with tables well spaced. All tables there were eventually occupied when...we dined one August evening but the service remained efficient and friendly. All our starters and mains could not be faulted, the pork belly received acclaim, but prices seemed to have increased significantly since our last pre Covid visit so will now be a venue (for us) for special occasions.. There was a tomahawk steak for two as a "special" but priced at a somewhat startling £70, and I had not yet taken my ramipril tablet that evening when the price was announced to us. Good wine list and some interesting cocktails. Lots of tables in the grounds for outside eating and drinking and as we left the smoking shelter was rather raucous with somewhat drunken youngsters, rather a contrast with the restaurant we had just exited.More

Visited with friends and booked a few days in advance. Relatively warm welcome and was pleased to see our table ready for us even though we arrived into a busy restaurant at 2pm. We were sat and then had to wait a few minutes before...menus arrived. Offered drinks etc and then ordered food. We were very hungry. Starters took a long time to arrive (35 mins), even though most other tables were eating their mains or deserts. I ordered the starter portion of the charcuterie board. I thought it would be a good sized portion for £11, but thought it was over generous just for one person! Was very tasty though. My friends had the Camembert and the scallops. Mains arrived very swiftly after starters were cleared, which gave the impression that they had been sat under the hot lights. I asked for another drink as mains arrived but it never arrived, even though was added onto the bill! Deserts were very tasty too. Waitresses wore masks but mainly on their chin or not covering their mouth/nose! No point wearing it if not wearing it properly. Lots of guests walking around without masks on and no prompts by any of the staff to request them to wear them. Working in this industry myself, it’s frustrating but most people are happy to put them on if prompted. Service was hit and miss but will definitely visit again.More

I would find it difficult to fault this restaurant. It is a bit off the beaten track, just South of the Devil's Punch Bowl; but, having been Gastropub of the Year, among other honours, it has been well and truly discovered. The pub dates from...1525, but its character and ambience, and the stunning views over woodland, and the exceedingly-pleasant and helpful staff combined to create a simply exquisite , busy but unhurried atmosphere. My friend is pescatarian, and I went along with that. We started with a dozen oysters and a glass of champagne, before I moved on to Moules Marinière, following with Kedgeree, which I know is usually served as a breakfast dish, but it was beautifully spiced with lovely haddock and fluffy rice, and was just right for the day. By the time we got to dessert (our booking was for 2:15pm) we were able to move out to a table on the balcony, where we were able to offer a direct but unobtrusive Santé to proprietor and Head Chef Simon Goodman, and his Brigade Make no mistake - we will be back!More

Nice atmosphere, beautiful building and very tasty food. HOWEVER unless you have unlimited funds, do ask for food price list beforehand. We were very unpleasantly surprised with the bill. We asked for a vegan menu, and they couldn't provide one as there wasn't one available...- however they informed us they could have prepared a vegan mushroom risotto. We decided to order one and a side of chips as we weren't overly hungry. Food arrived and indeed the risotto was lovely. Chips were average skinny fries. When it was time to pay we were shocked to discover that one portion of risotto came to £21.95 !!! We live in London and we're used to food being pricey, but not THIS dear. A side bowl of fires came to £5.50 - I believe these were just regular frozen fries, nothing homemade. It's hard to say we enjoyed our visit as by the time we left we felt as if we'd just been robbed in broad daylight.More

Having been disappointed with some of the food on our last visit (some time ago) we thought we would have another try, as the pub and grounds are quite stunning (and well maintained) I understand the chef/proprietor has won various awards (they are framed and...on the wall) but the menu plays it very safe and is really pub food. No beef, pork or lamb on the menu, and no fish of the day. That being said my ham eggs and chips were really good (ham was excellent) but my wife had a rather dull Cajun chicken with salad. We arrived at 12.00 and were first to be seated in the restaurant area but our meals still took 45 mins to arrive (must have caught the kitchen by surprise?)More

The Duke of Cumberland near Midhurst really is a hidden treasure, with stunning views across the valley looking towards Blackdown, My daughter had booked the restaurant for a Sunday lunch and asked for a Rib of Beef for three of us. We were very well...received and although many were sitting at tables outside enjoying their Sunday Lunch, We sat in their restaurant and it wasn’t long before the magnificent platter arrived with a Rib of Beef, Roast Potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Then additional dishes of Cauliflower Cheese with Leeks as well as generous portion of Brocolli and Carrots plus a very large jug of superb gravy. My son in law carved the meat and we enjoyed a generous portion of beautifully cooked beef ( nice & pink). We all chose various desserts and I had the best Crème Brûlée ever. The service was efficient and so friendly and although I did not pay, I know it was great value with great food and great service . As we left the waitress put the beef we couldn’t manage into two containers, that I enjoyed the next day. lessMore

Had dinner at this quaint pub. The food is fairly pricey however reflects the excellent quality and quantity of food served. I can highly recommend the stuffed Courgette Flowers whilst my husband had the equally good Camembert. Our main courses were a delicious Sea Bass...and crayfish Risotto. Food was served absolutely piping hot. Alas we couldn’t manage Desserts but would have loved to try what was on offer. My only annoyance was when we arrived the pub had not hit our booking on record. I had booked it 3 months earlier and had a confirmation email therefore had to sit in the bar area and not the Dining Room however the staff did apologise. This pub is worth a visit.More

I have given this a three in the hope people may read it. It is better than average but not at a very good level. The location is wonderful - it is set deep in the country side with great gardens and views across the...Surrey hills. It is spacious and offers dining inside, on a veranda or in a marquee. The tables are well spaced and provide reasonable room for diners. The menu looks interesting and is a considerably different from usual pub fare. However the delivery was a little disappointing mainly because of the barely adequate portion sizes. The food is well cooked and presented. I had mussels, my wife had crab and we shared a cheese platter for desert. The main downside is the very slow service - we were seated for about 15 minutes before we were given a menu and then had a further wait (obviously) before we could order. We were told this was because it was only the manger who was authorised to take orders. I do not know how many tables there were in the the dining areas but too many for one person. Our food arrived sooner than expected but only because of our previous experience. There was another long wait between our main course and the cheese board. There were other failings with cutlery not being provided. The prices are not as extortionate (as one writer suggests) but it was a bit more than I would expect to pay for this type of food. It is a pity because this is a spectacular location but maybe that accounts a bit for the price. I do recommend trying it but only if you have a lot of time on your hands. There is a car park but we had booked for 1:00 and it was full meaning we left our car in the lane outside.More

Lovely staff but this pub is wildly overpriced for the quality of food it offers. A £21 vegetarian tagine was stingy in quantity and pretty tasteless. I was offered more when I sent it back. My friend had ham, egg and chips for the same...crazy price. I’ve just looked at the menu i they have on their website and it’s very misleading, showing much more choice and for cheaper prices than the actual menu. The following day I went to The Pig in Arundle and was surprised to find first class food for the same price. This is the 2nd time I’ve felt over charged at the pub.More

We visited this pub on today on a Sunday. I really love this pub and its food but i was disappointed with the young person taking our order. Im afraid having someone young who clearly doesnt want to be there should stay at home and...not be around customers. I felt everything was too much trouble from the time we were sat down to her taking our orders. Our roast on the other hand was top notch and plenty of it. Our other waitress couldnt do enough for us which to an extent made up for Ms Grumpy.More

From the first second of speaking with Ali to organise a group booking for 12 right to the moment of departure we couldnt have been treated in a more professional manner. Thank you so much for a fantastic, highly memorable luncheon. Chef prepared exceptional culinary...delight's, both a true delight to the eye and stunning on the palate. We were served by highly attentive staff who showed kindness and care. Thank you Ali for making the day so special for everyone. Simon Goodman deserves every accolade that he has received. This place was recommended to us and we were not disappointed. We booked a table outside in the marquees and were instantly rewarded with a fantastic view of the South Downs. Wow! Who knew they were so beautiful. The menu was great offering so much...more than standard pub grub. Seasonal dishes, locally sourced Ingredients and creative flair made for delicious food. My only gripe is we had to ask for menus on arrival after a 30 min wait and similarly the bill. We were in no rush so enjoyed the view that much longer! Service during the meal was excellent with smiles aplenty. We will be back.More

Setting is lovely. First courses of duck and squid were good, the burger and wedges excellent, lamb tasty and crab nicely dressed, albeit unimaginative. Home made bread was ok, but when we asked for extra, we were told it was strictly rationed at one roll...per person. The real let down was the service, which was slow and graceless. Our table was overlooked, we had to ask for menus, it took forever for our order to be taken, and there were lengthy waits between first and main course and then effectively we were ignored once our main course had been served. We asked for desert menus, were forgotten, and then waited another 20 minutes before cancelling the desert and paying the bill. No reduction for Eat out to help out, so it is clear that this is a venue which doesn’t need new custom or cares particularly for its clients.More

5 adults & 2 young granddaughters had the most fabulous roast lunch (leg of lamb) in the restaurant. It was superbly cooked with a good selection of vegetables. The lamb was so big the remainder was wrapped in foil for us to take. Desserts were...also very good. The pub itself is a gem - well worth seeking out - and the views from the huge garden are wonderful. A first visit but not the last!More

An excellent meal served by really friendly staff. In a small restaurant of about 7-8 tables off from the small bar area being frequented by locals. The decor was modern styled without being pretentious. After ordering we received a complimentary butternut squash veloute followed by a...choice of chilli with fennel, or plain rolls served with yeast butter. The main course was excellent for all members of the party. We chose a reasonable priced Italian rose Pinot Grigio to accompany the meal. Following dessert and coffee, a large selection of liquers were available (lots of gins, rums, whisky's, bourbons). I personally chose a 12 year old Jura whisky. The menu is changed monthly, depending upon what is in season and available. The price of the meal with drinks and tip came to just under £50 per head. More expensive than I usually pay, but this restaurant was well worth the extra. I look forward to returning in the summer in order to be able to eat outside for lunch. Being off the beaten track, the surroundings are quiet and peaceful. Check on Goggle if you are uncertain as to its location as it is easy to miss the small lanes that lead to the restaurant.More

No, but there is at another local pub called The Kings Arms. Also does good food (but not on a level with The Duke of Cumberland).
