Vishal Bhardwaj was born August 4, 1965, in Chandpur city in District Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, India.

His father, Ram Bhardwaj, was a sugarcane inspector, and his mother Satya Bhardwaj worked as a homemaker. 

Until he finished fifth grade, he and his family lived in Najibabad and then subsequently relocated to Meerut, where he played cricket for the state’s under-19 squad.

He had an older brother who spent years in Mumbai trying to get into the film industry before passing away from a heart attack.

When he was seventeen years old, he wrote a song that his father heard and spoke to Usha Khanna, the music director, about it.

She utilized it in the movie Yaar Kasam, released in 1985 and Bhardwaj thereafter relocated to Delhi to complete his graduate studies at the Hindu College, University of Delhi. 

Bhardwaj began playing harmonium for friends who were ghazal singers and after a while, he accepted a position with CBS, a music label in Delhi.

He eventually moved to Mumbai to pursue a career as a music composer, and he only began directing movies to further his musical endeavors.

Bhardwaj made his debut as a soundtrack composer for the children’s movie, Abhay, in 1995 and later wrote music for Sanshodhan, released in 1996.
