Meanwhile, his son uses his father's unemployment as an excuse to drop out of the pre-med program his father pressured him to enter.

A solid tv movie with a good and relevant story to those of us living in 2020, which also features performances of such talented actors as Brian Dennehy, Matt Damon, Ving Rhames and Richard Jenkins.
Crazy what a good story and great cast does to a movie…
Depressing slice of Americana has factory worker Brian Dennehy laid off while his son (Matt Damon, in his debut) decides he doesn't want to go to college anymore. Well-acted and intense (a couple times it felt like Dennehy might have actually been trying to kill Matt Damon) but also bleak and sad and has no real ending.
Nothing like a swirling speech about how the rich don’t care about you only to end it with “if only we took pride in our work”. Yea because the problem was that you didn’t like making car parts all day, that’s why the rich people are shutting you down.
At least Ving Rhames is still the coolest guy in the world.
We Bought a Matt Damon:
Matt’s first leading role! I wish I could say it was something more special, but it is a tv movie. He plays a fairly basic character, a kid who doesn’t know what he wants in his life. But despite the character being fairly uninteresting, he’s still got that young Damon charm.
