The Aquabats are unapologetically ska, and that's the biggest pill you have to swallow to enjoy them. This album is relentlessly goofy, with broad and simple humor, and never afraid to go for the most obvious melodic riff. But unlike most of their horn-toting punk brethren, the Aquabats are more fun than annoying. Like impossibly fun, mixing their zany brass aerobics with surf-rock, ragtime, and Devo-punk. It's easy to get over their wacky novelty lyrics when it's so infectiously good-natured and bouncy, and besides, it's not like there's a wealth of other bands who swear so strongly by a comic-book aesthetic and a powerful sense of whimsy. I wish I had grown up on this shit, but as it is, I'm happy to enjoy it as an only-half-guilty pleasure. Super Rad, Red Sweater, Lobster Bucket, and especially "hidden track" Playdough Revisited get the biggest smiles out of me.

Zany ska-punk I got into when I was 15 and playing trombone in marching band. This is such Cartoon-Network-Intro-Song-Core that these guys literally got their own children TV show. BUT on summer afternoons when the sun is bright and the sky blue, I can put this on and skip to my favorite songs and sing along with my windows down.

Every once in a while an album comes back from my past that reminds me there's no such thing as cool or uncool music and to just listen to what sounds good. This is one of those albums.

PS: never forget The Baron Von Tito (aka Travis Barker) played drums on this then released Enema of the State like 18 months later.

Rec'd by DeafTab, taking a brave pro-ska stance in a cruel unforgiving world.

But guess what? This album's good! Yes, this album, which is ska-punk as played by eight white dweebs in superhero costumes, is good. What can I say, these songs are well-constructed and performed with obvious passion and energy. I would put "Red Sweater" on a playlist for a girl.

And honestly I don't mind the stupid gimmick. I often have a problems with acts who go all-in on outrageous imagery, but I actually like quite a lot of it, the image just has to be right for the music? So, for example, this band's heroes DEVO absolutely would not work without their dystopian-drone chic and (honestly quite insightful) political ideology. And cartoony sO rAnDoM XD idiocy actually 100% fits with ska--never forget that Madness has a song called "Chipmunks Are Go!"

This album rules. No other ska band puts weird waltzes and surf rock instrumentals and dixieland bops and a band theme song on their albums. Some parts of this - like the breakdown in Cat With Two Heads! or the entirety of Powdered Milk Man! - hit way harder than The Aquabats' frivolous reputation would have you believe. Yes, it's incredibly goofy and yes, there's a song (that owns!) about how much the lead singer likes eating fried chicken. Dig deeper and you'll find serious musicianship - oodles of slick horn lines, surf riffs, and Travis Barker just ripping the album to shreds - some all-timer gag lines, and even some legit poignancy. This is controversial but imo more music should be fun!

You have to be kind of a weird person to connect with this music in an emotional way. Unfortunately i’m one of those people. I love this album to death! The Aquabats are arguably the most talented costumed band out their musically, and here we have 16 wacky tracks of ska punk with a bit of a surf tinge. Though not as awfully campy as Return, Fury brings on just as much camp as you’d expect out of the Aquabats! It’s also some of the happiest and most joyful feel good music ever made, but not in an obnoxious way. Songs like Super Rad and Martian Girl just have such a fun and youthful feeling attached to them. Magic Chicken for me is one of the standouts of the album, and one of the most ridiculous, breaking into a sort of hip hop instrumental with call and response vocals.
Lyrics can be pretty funny, as most the songs tell some sort of bizarre story, like My Skateboard, or Captain Hampton and the Midget Pirates. A lot of the songs are also set up like monster of the week style TV shows, like Powdered Milk Man and The Cat With 2 Heads. The instrumentation is generally pretty good though it is semi standard third wave ska. Travis Barker being the drummer on this album is a plus though, he adds some complexity to the beats that melds very well with the songs.
I can understand not liking the Aquabats, but to hate them? I just don’t get that. This album is worth the listen.

A lot of ska that I used to be into does not hold up but early Aquabats stuff, surprisingly enough, holds up the best. They're a gimmick band, but it's a gimmick I love. It also helps that they're pretty good songwriters and keep this album fairly varied for ska for 16 whole tracks. The standout for me then and now is Captain Hampton and the Midget Pirates, a narrative song that made me wish these guys did more of them.
