Part three of the “Randy, Chuck and Bob”-trilogy was probably the best concert experience of the three tours. It was visually fitting to the music, and Randy’s long rants in between songs were wisely replaced by video interludes with little stories from the afterlife or twilight zone. These are not included on the live album - unfortunate because they worked as breathing spaces between the stream of noisy and expressive songs, which can be a bit similar sounding. Hard and Tenderly from God In three Persons is typical for the concert approach: The cool minimalism of the original is altered to a spiky drunken brawl here. Like many live Residents tracks it takes some listens to get used to - then it can be appreciated in its own right. The approach doesn't always work: Three Demons Dance Alone tracks doesn’t add anything new, but in general, the Shadowland set is strong. A highlight is Judas Saves, a song I never liked before. Suddenly it appears brilliant. Mourning Glories from Not Available (which was great in the first place) is great in a different way here. Songs form Freak Show and Bunny Boy are also superior or refreshingly different to their album versions.
During the three Randy, Chuck and Bob-tours The Residents performed and brought new life to some 60 different tracks. It's impressive, but in this period their studio work suffered. Eventually they also lost key member and composer “Bob”, a.k.a Bobuck, a.k.a. Hardy Fox. After the Shadowland tour The Residents finally started focusing on making proper studio albums again. Hopefully, new songs from these can be twisted and turned inside out in future shows.
